Uses: Dresses, blouses, dressing gowns, bathrobes, pyjamas, fabric lining, handkerchiefs, lingerie, sheets, bedding, drapes
Pre-Wash: In Warm water and dry in a regular dryer, pull out before completion to aviod wrinkles.
Needle: 70/10
Thread: Cotton

History of the Fabric:
Most people agree the fabric started in early1400s France. It's in the same family as Voile and Lawn.

Broadcloth


Composition: Wool-based or Poly-Cotton
Uses: Shirts, skirts, Lining
Pre-Wash: Yes if it's poly or poly-cotton.
Needle: 90/14 or 100/16 for heavy types
Special Notes:
History of the Fabric:
Developed in the Netherland in the Flanders region in the 11th century. Leiden (Netherlands) became a center of development in the 14th century. From there other countries started to develop their own broadcloth in the late 15th century.

Brocade


Composition: Originally silk, but polyester or cotton are now common
Uses: Dresses, ecclesiastical vestments, costumes, trousers, jackets, suits, upholstery, drapes
Pre-Wash: No, but if you must then dry-clean only.
Needle: 70/10H
Thread: Silk, Cotton or Polyester
Special Notes:
History of the Fabric:
No one country can trace the origin of Brocade, but it's believed that it came from China during the Warring States Period (475-221 BCE). What is known that the countries of China, Southeast Asia, and Byzantium all develop early examples of the cloth. Brocade has always been known as a luxary fabric because of it's weave.

The name of Canvas traces it's name to the 13th century, but has a much longer history of that. During the 14th century it was popular to use as canvas for painting.

Needle: 60/8, 65/9, 70/10 HM or HJ
Thread: Machine embroidery thread in cotton or silk.

History of the Fabric:
The fabric originates in China and dates back to before 3000 BC. The fabric was popular among the upper class in China and made it's way to Europe and was popular in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period. The modern version of the fabric has it's roots in France.

Chenille

Composition:
Uses: Letterman Jackets, dresses, eveningwear, blouses, pants, costumes, and shawls.
Pre-Wash: Gentle Cycle and warm water, dry flat.
Needle: 80/12 H
Thread: Cotton or Polyester
Special Notes:
History of the Fabric:
Chenille was developed in 1780s century France it didn't become a popular fashion choice until the 1970s.

Pre-Wash biggrin ry-clean if needed
Needle: 60/8 or 65/9 HJ or HM
Thread: Cotton
Foot: Presser
Special Notes:
History of the Fabric:
Chiffon was originally in France and made of silk in the 18th Century, but in 1938 nylon became the primary source for the fabric.

Chino

Chino was designed to be used by the army and became popular in the US and UK armies in the second have of the 1800s. They were known as the original Khakis.

Corduroy

Uses: Pants, overalls, jackets, uniforms, shirts, dresses, pillows, upholstery
Pre-Wash: Dry Clean
Needle: 80/12 HJ or 80/12 H
Thread: Cotton and Polyester
Foot: Walking

History of the Fabric:
The earliest samples of a fabric like corduroy appear in around 200 AD in Egypt and was called Fustain. It was a rougher material than todays modern version. It wasn't till the 18th that England began to manufactor the what we see as corduroy today. During this time the material became highly popular. Corduroy is derived from the french phrase: Cordon du roi meaning King of Cords.

Pre-Wash: Yes
Needle: 70/10 or 80/12
Thread: Cotton or polyester
Pros: Washable, Breathable
Cons: Lint

History of the Fabric:
Cotton has been around since Anicent Egypt in which it was wore by the Pharaohs. It was only for the rich throughout history. The process for creating cotton was a long process, but with the invition of Eli Whitney's cotton gin (1793), cotton became more avaliable. Just in time for the regency period. With cotton an easy to go grow cash crop we have a rise of slavery and one of the reasons that slavery did last as long as it did.

A type of cotton that has a dyeing technique from Indonesia. It's propular as the the backing of quilts and usually cost a little more than normal cotton.
