Whatever happened to Zero?

The way Megaman X 3 ends and all, makes me wonder.

Zero costarred in quite a few of the X games starting with 4. After that he had his own series on the Game Boy Advance.

Yeah, but the ending of 3 implies Zero eventually dies, at the hands of Megaman himself for whatever reason.

However, I've never heard of it actually coming to pass.
