Glittering Cave – Mine Control Center

Écarlate noticed Kiedis pull himself up from the ground. The pokemon was dangerous and single minded. The female trainer that he he'd been with had gotten away, which meant that Écarlate had completely won this fight.

However Kiedis seemed to see things differently. He wanted more blood, more fighting. Did he want one of them to die? As soon as Kiedis started to speak, Écarlate raised up his good pincer. The two pieces parted and the flash cannon shot forth. Écarlate didn't intend to let up there, whether or not it hit Écarlate would follow up with a Quick Attack to close the distance to Kiedis immediately, one he would end with a kick from his good leg to try and launch the little bear Pokemon - and if that worked he'd throw in a Bullet Punch while Kiedis started to fly away for the added force and damage.

Glittering Cave - The Tunnels

Helena was pressed to the wall just outside of the entrance to Diancie's domain. When she saw the battle from afar, the crystals and their brilliant shine up until their eventual fall with Diancie's capture, she had opted to hide and wait for an opportunity to escape.

Something made harder by the fact that Diancie had been captured at the mouth of the cavern which prevented Helena from just making a run for it. Instead she kept a hand on one of her pokeballs, ready for a fight if it came to it, but hoping that the people would be so distracted once they got the pokeball that she could escape.

I don't see Zack in there, so I must have taken a wrong turn.

The Clash of Route 9 - The Pokemon Center

"Get the injured to the teleporters!" Grant shouted. The doors to the center hung open as injured pokemon and trainers were being escorted inside. Until it was over it would be impossible to account for everyone that didn't make it, they just had to hope that everyone had made it out safely or at least alive.

They had managed to slow down the stampede from crashing through the center, but now they were out of time. The place wouldn't last but a minute, maybe two. So Grant helped with the evacuation, he helped coordinate it and let everyone else through first. Meanwhile he watched the herd.

His pokemon were lost in the fray of it, the three he had sent out anyways. He took some solace in the fact that there were still sounds coming in through their collars when he flipped through the channels. It helped him believe that they were all alive and well.

"We need to shut the door!" Grant called to Roy. It wouldn't keep the other Pokemon out, but it would buy them a couple of seconds or so Grant hoped.

Anyone who was going to be able to teleport had teleported, or were in that process. That left anyone out there still fighting and then Grant and Roy who had been near the pokemon center.

Levi chewed on his tongue. Not literally, that would be gross, but he was thinking through anything he could say at this point very thoroughly. Giving Matheson Sal's name would be akin to ratting her out, Levi wasn't about that life. But on the other hand it seemed that this sponsored trainer could be reasoned with.

Although the sponsored trainer seemed unpredictable, Levi decided to go with his gut, and to hell with the consequences.

"Her name is Salieri," Levi stated, casting his dice.

Meanwhile, over at the Battle Chateau....

Battle Chateau

Jiraiya watched from behind the bush he was hidden as the officers led Sal into the police cruiser. He had no idea what his master warranted as necessary action in this situation. From his observation Sal seemed in no immediate danger, but the.... feeling he got said other wise.

instead of storming the gaggle of humans dressed like his masters Aunt, The frog ninja decided to sprint back to his trainer and report his findings.

Glittering Cave - The Tunnels

Mission Accomplished. Aliana leant over and picked up Diancie's ball. It was two parts dark grey, two parts silver, structured like a four way claw, a black button at its centre. It was a variation on the Master Ball, specifically designed to capture legendary pokémon with an almost 100% success rate. Her grunts hadn't been very impressed when she explained it to them, so she made a note to have future models be brightly coloured and sparkle when thrown.

Clink. Clink. Clink.

The Flare Scientist froze, looking this way and that. Her two grunts were battered and exhausted, holding each other up as they slumped towards the exit tunnel. Judging by the expression on their faces, they didn't know where the sound was coming from either. Soft and metallic, it sounded like two metal hands clapping slowly together.

'Very impressive,' said the voice. It was deep and growling, distorted, as if the product of a cheap radio. It sent a chill down Aliana's back and she looked to the source. The tunnel they'd entered through, partly lit by glowing orange trail markers put down by her grunts. Something was standing there. It wore a heavy ragged cloak, and the kind of ornate metal gauntlets and leg braces seen on centuries-old Kalosian knights. Most striking was the white oval mask covering its face, smooth like a shell, but with animalistic markings that reminded Aliana of a feral pokémon. The rest of its head was hidden by a thick hood made from layers upon layers of black cloth.

The creature swept into the inner chamber, its cloak floating lightly behind it. Though Aliana had no idea Helena was there, the creature must have, for it walked right past the girl.

'That's far enough,' the scientist said, remembering her authority. In the back of her mind, she tallied up her fighting force. Two useless grunts and a beaten up Mightyena, plus her Druddigon. And Diancie, of course, but she didn't expect the legendary to take commands so soon after capture. It was a last resort.

The creature kept walking, ignoring her. It looked around the cave, at the rubble and fallen gems that had dropped to the ground after Diancie's defeat, making an obvious show of craning its neck around.

'I said that's enou-' Aliana spoke no more. With a rush of wind, the creature was upon her, his metal hand snapped either side of her mouth, pressing hard, pressing until her skin split. Her mind raced. She saw no obvious movements, no flash of light from a teleport. The creature simply changed location. She was so concerned about the hand gripping her face like a vice that she almost didn't notice the other prying her fingers open and pulling away the tiny pokéball. Diancie's ball.

The creature took the ball, holding it up to the gemlight. Aliana crashed to her knees, her two grunts making concerned murmurs but taking no action. The creature seemed satisfied, making Diancie's ball vanish into its mass of cloth. It turned its attention back to the scientist.

'You fool,' she coughed, grinning, 'You have no idea who you're messing with, do you? Team Flare is far more than just these buffoons. Take that ball and you're a dead man.'

While Aliana spoke, the creature listened, tilting its head with the rise and fall of her words. Aliana glared up at it, her scientist's mind putting together an incomplete picture of the creature's abilities. She quickly grabbed Druddigon's ball and lobbed it. The dragon went for the creature, aiming to tackle it to the floor and tear it apart.

Wind rushed again, and with it a howl. Druddigon was wrenched mid-dive, and dragged to the cavern floor. Aliana fell back as the cave filled with vicious snarling and Druddigon's high pitch, terrified screeching. It was thrashed about by its neck, then the screeching stopped, and the dragon hit the floor. Motionless. The Arcanine padded towards the floored scientist. It was smaller than other Arcanine by far, its body slender rather than bulky, but still big enough to rip a man to shreds. It stepped closer to her, sniffing hot breath on her face. She could smell Druddigon's blood on the hot mist that filtered between the Arcanine's teeth.

'Heel, Ferox,' the creature said. The Arcanine stopped, then turned back around. It walked slowly back to its master, eyeing Aliana with a dark, hungry snarl. Aliana struggled to breathe. She looked up in time to see the creature remove its mask. It gripped the white oval with its clawed metal hand, squeezing the sides until it clicked, then pulled it away. Its hood fell down as the mask was removed, and lengths of auburn hair spilled down the creature's back and chest. Aliana recognised his face.

'You,' she gasped, pushing herself back along the floor as the creature watched in silence. His dark eyes were as cold and pitiless as the gorge. A few shallow lines had been carved into skin that was once pale, but now harsh and leathery from over a decade spent in Nostrad's own prison. It was him, the assassin. 'Ratio.'

Ratio looked Aliana over with apathy, as if deciding whether or not she'd be worth the trouble of killing. But he had already called the Arcanine, Ferox, back from attacking her, hadn't he? She calculated her odds at the back of her mind, sparing a thought for the two grunts behind her. Their chances were considerably worse, she decided.

'You were saying something,' Ratio said at last. Without the mask's distortion, his voice resonated deeply and pure. The voice of a commander. 'You were warning me about what would happen if I took this pokémon. Bold words, coming from a puppet of the nobility.'

Aliana swallowed dry and her eyes darted for an escape, but found nothing except the tunnel directly behind Ratio. He met her gaze, eyes piercing like a blade.

'I'm going to let you live,' he said, taking a step towards Aliana but not looking at her. 'I want you to deliver a message for me. Tell the Court that I'm ready for them. They can plot and scheme until the end of time, but I will always be there. And I will stop them. Now go!'

The two Flare grunts stumbled past almost immediately. One of them spared Aliana a brief glance, but quickly looked ahead, giving Ratio a wide berth as they fled into the tunnel. Aliana started to get to her feet, but she was stopped when a long shard of metal pressed against her throat. Ratio looked at her down the length of his sword, a jagged, ugly thing that was spotted with old blood. Her breathing intensified. She looked him in the eye.

'You said...' she trailed off as realisation dawned.
'It doesn't take three people to deliver a message.' Ratio replied, swinging his blade.

The Clash of Route 9

The last of the teleport zone's pokémon vanished, taking a final trainer away in a flash. Anyone else left already had their hands full, or was too tired or injured to keep fighting, slumped in a corner or behind the counter, trying to stay out of the way. Roy gave Grant a thumbs up over the din, rushing to the side of the center's extrance. The glass was smashed, the door's frame dangling in its busted mechanism. A gaping wound just asking for infection. Trainers outside were still fighting valiantly, giving people cover as they made their escape. Roy grabbed a heavy bookshelf and tipped it on its side. Books scattered across the floor, but the shelf itself made the start of a barricade, blocking the bottom half of the center's main entrance.

'Grab what you can!' Roy shouted back at Grant. Tables, chairs, anything big enough to fill the gap. Deep down, Roy knew that if solid walls couldn't do anything to stop the rampage, a feeble barricade had no chance. He still had to try. It was better than nothing.

Above all the noise, all the screaming and explosions and roaring pokémon, Roy heard something shatter like glass. He glanced over his shoulder. The tiled floor was breaking apart, aiming upwards. The thought that it might be a giant beanstalk flashed through Roy's panicked mind, but the reality was much worse. A moment after the tiles broke, a solid, peaked blade stabbed through the middle of the center floor.

Everything rumbled, and an Excadrill smashed out of the hole, climbing into the lobby between Grant and Roy. It took a look around, livid. Had the rampage disturbed it somehow? It really didn't matter. A second later, the ground type was dashing for Grant, aiming to slash his gut open.

Glittering Cave – The Gorge

The Kabutops coughed as the poison seeped into its lungs, but was not deterred in attacking what miscreants disturbed its century long sleep. Seeing that Slash did not work on the gaseous Pokémon, Kabutops advanced with a Night Slash using the other scythe claw, attempting to rend Hazard in half.

Armaldo was not as persistent, reeling back from getting shot in the face. Its head didn’t quite blast off, but the feeling was enough that it got very angry. Leveling its minimal sight at Zack and Clauncher, it grabbed a rock and threw it at Zack to Smack Down the trainer to the floor.

****

Jump spun away from Zack, and heard the unmistakable sound of big footprints pounding his way. Two huge Pokémon he had never seen before. Jump was fond of dinosaurs, because dinosaurs were awesome, but not like this. His other Pokémon weren’t as suited to battling as Kiedis and Hexum, so his plan was to run around until Hexum took care of everything in his Mega state. Now that he wasn’t confined to a minecart, he could finally use his full mobility.

When Bastiodon lowered its head to ram it up into Jump’s body, Jump took a running started and planted a foot onto the Shield Pokémon’s head, leaping up and running safely along its spine. Rampardos was close behind, also low to the ground, so Jump used Bastiodon as a platform to do the same to the T-Rex.

As the Rampardos stood up Jump balanced precariously atop the T-Rex’s skull, avoiding the spikes, then slid down the bottom of its entire back, head to tail. It was actually kind of fun.

Jump rolled onto the ground into something icky, and tried not to think about it as he kept moving. “Aaliyah!” he called, released a Shiny Altaria. The fluffy Dragon cooed as Jump pounced atop her back. “Coochie coochie coo, who’s a good Altaria? Watch out for the dinosaurs.”

Aaliyah noticed the two angry prehistoric Pokémon Jump had barely avoided, and flapped her wings faster, flying low to the ground since she didn’t know what else was around.

****

Hexum glanced up as he fell, spotting the red hot glow of the meteors coming down above him. He put one hand up in the air, and a dome of blue Aura cascaded above him like an umbrella. The meteors rocked against it but were vaporized on the spot.

Tyrantrum’s giant jaw opened up, threatening to catch the falling Mega Lucario and grind him into a paste. Hexum snarled, screamed, and with his free hand tossed an Aura Sphere to the gaping mouth. If it came to pass, the orb would reach Tyrantrum’s tongue before Hexum did, and Hexum would try to keep both jaws from closing around him with all limbs as the Aura Sphere detonated inside the dinosaur.

More meteors fell from the darkness of the gorge, and Aaliyah whizzed and barrel rolled between them with Jump hanging onto her plush plumage for dear life. “Siiiiiiiick!” he cried, dizzy but excited.

Glittering Cave – Mine Control Center

It was just as Kiedis thought: the mantis still had fight in him. As long as one of them was conscious, he wouldn’t quit.

Flash Cannon was one of Hexum’s favored techniques, so the bear knew how it worked. The bright radiance it gave off made the attack seem larger than it actually was. Kiedis ducked under the actual orb with his arms crossed over each other, letting it fly behind him as he rose from the light.

Écarlate only had one good leg, one he needed to both launch and kick with. The necessary midair shift gave Kiedis the time he needed to forcefully uncross his arms, Cross Chopping at the incoming attack to hopefully both block and counter it. This time, the bear’s feet were planted firmly in the ground, so he could brace himself properly for whatever impact was to come.

Camphrier Town

Matheson closed his eyes and rubbed the side of his head at the word ‘Salieri’. It was an uncommon name for certain, and one he thought he had heard a long time ago. “No good, this is no good.” He muttered, more to himself than to Levi. Math turned away from Levi again, pacing in his bedroom. “I can’t get involved in this…I have to get involved in this. I made a promise. Promises, plural.”

The noble looked through the Fairy Lock at Levi once more. “This may be a long shot, but is her last name Soledad?”

The Clash of Route 9

A special government access road led up Connecting Cave and onto the Cliffside of Route 8 towards Ambrette Town. To her right Salieri could see the sparkling ocean and white sandy beach far below, but this was no time to take in the beauty of Kalos.

Salieri couldn’t ask about what was going on at Route 9 on the way over, or else the cops might figure out she wasn’t the volunteer she claimed to be. She had to gauge the situation from the news that played on the dashboard’s mini TV from the backseat of the cruiser. News crews couldn’t safely get round the clock footage, so they were replaying important highlights at this time.

The bandanna girl could make out Zack riding a Rhyhorn through the Spikes Passage in one shot. Although she didn’t care for the foreigner, seeing him rush into the fray proved that he wasn’t just hot air after all. Sal also spotted Roy, the security guard whose Luxray battled Durendal in Parfum Palace’s maze just the day prior. Two different people that hate me in the same place. Great.

“So, uh, who called you guys to tell you I was volunteering before?” Sal asked the two officers in the front seat of the car. They both shrugged. “Were there any other volunteers?”
“Just you. And we really appreciate it,” the officer said with an earnest smile. Sal gave him a fake one back, then looked down at her Pokédex. The loading screen had barely made progress since half an hour ago.

Jace was the only volunteer? This is definitely a set up. She closed her eyes, thinking back on events. Any heroics I do out there will make the nobles look good…What are they gonna do to me when I’m done? Her fists clenched in white hot anger, claws of a caged animal. I won’t let them have the last laugh. They won’t turn this around on ME.

The cruiser came to a halt just out of Ambrette Town, and everyone inside stepped out. The scene was just like it was on TV, but worse. Part of the stampede already made it into Ambrette Town, smashing buildings closest to Route 9 and making it towards the Pokémon center. Salieri put a hand up to visor her eyes and survey the landscape. The bobbing of Roy’s head in the Pokémon center could be seen through its window. “Trainer are trying to direct the riot towards the ocean, but the Pokémon are scared of water. We need to set up a barricade and figure out what’s causing this mess-“

“Barricade, no problem,” Salieri said quickly, releasing Banksy. The turtle was inside her shell, steam curling up in wisps from the top. Sal knelt down to the Torkoal’s side. “Hey, I know we don’t get along, but this is bigger than us. Look.”

Banksy poked her head out, catching sight of the carnage. After a few seconds, her White Jet thrusters were aimed to the ground and she hovered in place a foot off the floor. Salieri jumped aboard, grabbed hold of a groove on Banksy’s shell, and the two of them flew off in a trail of white smoke.

The cops stare slackjawed at the flying rocket Torkoal heading towards the Pokémon center. “…I was this close to making an inspirational speech,” one of the cops said sadly. His partner slapped him on the back.
“You’ll get ‘em next time, Mike. You’ll get ‘em next time.”

****

The window of the Pokémon Center shattered as Sal and Banksy flew in. Banksy opened her mouth and blew a stream of flames at the Excadrill’s armored hide. As Banksy’s Flamethrower streamed, Sal stood tall on the hovering tortoise and looked down at Roy.

The last time they had faced each other, Sal was defiant. But the former security guard had showed her a bit of mercy, probably at the expense of his own job. It was no small feat, but Salieri felt slightly humbled in his presence.

“Hey,” she said to him, “I owe you one. If I set up a wall on Route 9, can you handle protecting the town?”

The Clash of Route 9 - The Center Battle

Whatever they could grab wasn't much. Chairs, benches and tables. Grant started for one of the benches when he saw it. The tile break and Excadrill reveal itself.

"Mayan!" Grant shouted as he released Claydol. He had no Pokemon suited for this combat, not on him anyways. The three that were capable were out in the field, fighting for their lives. This was the only one Grant had that could fight this battle.

He pressed the five on his earpiece as Claydol met Excadrill's slash head on. A movement that proved to be useless as Salieri came crashing into the show. The Excadrill had the sense to shift his momentum and launch himself away from the fire.

"We could use you," Grant said to Salieri, relieved to have another friendly face in the midst of everything. "We'll handle whatever's left of Ambrette."

Grant said the words with complete confidence. Words he intended to keep, though he might have doubted them if he were in a position to speak them ten seconds later. This was when the giant Hippowdon burst through the Pokemon center doors, turning their makeshift barricade into an artillery of wooden missiles and screws. It exploded, fractured and shrapnel, at the trainers and their Pokemon.

Grant, closest to the door, would immediately receive the worst of it, though he wouldn't be able to realize that until a few seconds later when he either found himself saved or crumpled on the ground after hitting the far wall of the center.

With Hippowdon's arrival, came the flood of the sandstorm, obscuring everything and tearing into the flesh of the unprotected.

Glittering Cave - The Tunnels

Whatever was happening, it wasn't important. Not to Helena, at least not at the moment. She could worry about these people after she found her brother. She turned to head the other way when she caught sight of the creature.

At the end of the tunnel - or rather what she could see of it - it looked like the darkness was moving. The crystals and markers, casting only a dim glow because of their size in the tunnel, showed only enough light to give the impression that something was moving, but not to color it in any way.

Helena felt herself freeze up. Her heart began to race, her eyes locked on the approaching darkness and her whole body tensed up. Distance didn't give it a form that Helena could distinguish, the ragged cloak's sway with each of the creatues steps giving the impression of tendrils swaying in the darkness. It was a monster, waddling closer and closer and even as Helena could see the mask, tinted in fractured colors by the crystals that lined the walls, it did nothing to give her the impression that the creature was human.

Helena found herself pressed to the wall, frozen. She was more afraid to move than to stay and her eyes remained on the creature, his eventual arrival into the cavern causing her to follow him with her head. Adrenaline made her aware of everything. Every movement, every sound - especially that of her breath and her heart, she swore it was true that she could hear it thumping in her chest, afraid of the creature hearing it too.

She heard the conversation, and she watched it. Every moment of it slowed down in her eyes, and slower in her head. The creature's hand on her face, the death of her Pokemon, the men as they fleed not paying her any attention.

When Aliana died, Helena let out a sound between a scream and a squeak and then immediately covered her mouths with both hands, eyes locked on the creature though Aliana's corpse seemed crystal clear in her periphereal vision.

It would take her a moment longer to realize that she had moved into the opening of the cavern, though she couldn't place when.

Écarlate bent his knee into the attack as Kiedis braced to stop it. It the sudden shift worked, it would either force Écarlate's knee into Kiedis' face or force Kiedis to bring a foot backward to better hold the change.

And during this distraction, Écarlate would swing a Metal Claw in from the side and try and catch Kiedis in the head, sending him sideways.

The Clash of Route 9 - The Center Battle

'Oh god, not you again,' Roy moaned as soon as Salieri burst into the room. He had little time to take in her words, Hippowdon smashing through his poor excuse for a barricade. He saw Grant get thrown in the corner of his eye, managing to dive up against the wall and out of the enraged ground type's way. He only had Luxray as an alternate pokémon, and between Hippowdon and Excadrill, he doubted an electric type would be that useful.

'Do not leave!' he shouted to Salieri as Hippowdon's Sandstorm gushed from its vents. It flooded the center, spinning around like an indoor tornado. Its fine, glassy particles made it next to impossible for the humans to make out more than fuzzy images and shadows. And being trapped in a pokémon's Sandstorm meant that they'd slowly get worn down, picked apart with the sand lightly flaying their flesh.

---

Excadrill acted on instinct, attacking the nearest target, driven into a frenzy by the other rampaging pokémon. When Mayan put itself in front of Grant, it became the new target. Though mad with the same rage that gripped the pokémon outside, Excadrill was still conscious enough to know that fire was bad. When Salieri burst in with Banksy, Excadrill threw himself sidewards, turning its body around into a fast spin, drilling into the center's tiles again and escaping the flames.

A few moments later, the Hippowdon's Sandstorm filled every inch of the center's interior, activating the mole pokémon's Sand Rush and Sand Force abilities. His body became twice as fast in the storm, his attacks even more powerful. Excadrill had a good look at where people were positioned before diving underground. For the second stage of his Dig attack, the ground type would burst out of the ground beneath Banksy, flying upward. He'd aim to plunge one claw into the flying Torkoal's underside with Brick Break, then swing up and Slash it along its flank. With Sand Rush enhancing his speed, Excadrill would be difficult to avoid.

---

Sand raged inside the center and poured out through gaps, spurting into the sky. Trainers outside, standing on top of cars and roofs, were busy fighting the horde. Their pokémon were becoming increasingly spent, and what were once simple fights started to get a lot harder. A mass of pokémon shifted towards the pokémon center, wriggling as if all part of one massive body. They rose from the rampaging horde, standing tall at about seven and a half feet, blue flesh peeking between twitching arms and legs.

The mass reached the center doors and began to fall apart. A Sandile thrown away, and Helioptile discarded. One by one, until the last pokémon was ripped from Feraligatr's hide and tossed back into the fray. The water type was battered, he was bleeding, and he was breathing heavy. But he was back.

It took him a second to gauge the situation, then he roared, charging in and pouncing onto Hippowdon's back. He reared his head, then swung it back down, aiming to sink his fangs into the back of the hippo's neck with a Crunch.

Glittering Cave - The Tunnels

The deed was done. Aliana crumpled to the floor, her flesh pale and her body unmoving. Ratio had killed more people than he could remember. There was a time when he'd grieve after a kill, or be disgusted with himself, but that time had long passed. One more death wouldn't make a difference to a conscience that had long since withered away. He tossed the ugly blade to the floor, no longer needing it. He would allow the nobility reclaim it, let them waste their time trying to analyse the sword for clues.

'Helena,' he said without turning around. He didn't put his mask back on, instead holding it in his metal grip. Ferox looked towards the cave entrance, and growled at the sight of the girl, but otherwise did nothing.

'Helena Redgrave,' Ratio went on, this time turning around. He looked her in the eye, as cold and uncaring as he had with Aliana moments before her death. 'Don't be afraid.'

Glittering Cave - The Gorge

Avoid the scythe. Check. Avoid the falling, blazing rocks. Double check. Hazard wasn't stupid, and knew to fly off as soon as unleashing her Toxic. By the time Kabutops had turned, swinging its Night Slash, she was already over its head, unharmed. The prehistoric pokémon hadn't evaded Tyrantrum's Draco Meteor, and would therefore get smashed by a massive version of the attack. Hazard used Kabutops' recovery time to swoop in and launch a fairly short range Confuse Ray.

If it could land, she'd have Kabutops lurching around like a drunk, allowing her to blast it with a conical Psywave from below and blow it off its feet.

---

The shot was right on target, but Clauncher wasn't strong enough for a one shot fight. Zack grit his teeth, running into the darkness and diving, preying that there weren't any sharp rocks or gaps for him to fall into. It hadn't occurred to him into he was partway into the air, but it was absolutely possible that the bottom of the gorge wasn't the lowest part. There could be a crack in the rock a hundred feet deep. One misstep and he'd be dead. He hit the floor, finding only solid rock beneath him, rolled, and stopped, kneeling down with Clauncher in his grasp.

'God dammit,' he growled, the Smack Down rock bouncing just inches to his right, a Draco Meteor landing just behind him, blowing up red hot debris that stung his skin and made the air stink like burning coal. He swiped Clauncher to the side, commanding a Swords Dance. The pokémon surged with power, flashing brightly for a second, heightening its attack strength. Zack swung it forward again. There was a fair distance between him and Armaldo. He'd aim to blow out both of the pokémon's knees with Water Gun as it charged, ever ready to run if he needed to.

---

Bastiodon had trouble turning after a charge, taking its time to realise where Jump had gone. Rampardos was even less graceful, its heavy legs swinging forward and its lighter top half swinging back, making it land awkwardly on its back with a spray of mud. Neither of the pokémon were prepared to avoid their king's Draco Meteor. Bastiodon charged right into one and got blown through the air, while Rampardos took one on the belly, its eyes bulging. They lay on the ground, singed and smoking, not getting up any time soon.

The darkness housed a curdling screech, and a silent flap of wings. Jump and Aaliyah wouldn't have much time to celebrate. Barely illuminated by the gemlight, an Aerodactyl swooped in to tackle them from the air. Just as Tyranitar was enormous for its species, so was Aerodactyl. It was thick and bulky, and had half a normal Aerodactyl's wingspan again, but it moved all the faster for it.

If the admin and his pokémon didn't make a move, Aerodactyl would crash into them like a race car hitting a barrier, ensnaring and entangling their bodies with its own, wrapping them into its massive, leathery wings and holding them tight. They'd be in the perfect position be bit into by Aerodactyl's massive Ice Fang.

---

Tyrantrum was king. He wouldn't stop for anything, least of all his dinner's feeble attempt to defy him. He used his Crunch to break the Aura Sphere before it could do any real damage, snapping his jaw shut tight and making the sphere explode against his strongest assets; his teeth. The Lucario's remnant aura leaked from Tyrantrum's jaw as a brilliantly glowing mist, hissing around him. He staggered, the aura cracking his rock skin inside and outside of his mouth, making it fly off in chunks like embers of burning paper, but he didn't stop charging.

With his jaw shut, Tyrantrum could no longer bite on Hexum right away. Instead, he made to smash into the aura pokémon, before it could touch the floor, using a skull-first Bulldoze attack. The super effective move would carry Hexum, and drive him spine-first into a particularly huge rock, pinning him by Tyrantrum's hard head.

Glittering Cave - The Tunnels

Helena sucked in a breath that made an audible gasp when Ferox began to growl. The sight of the beast was almost as bad as its master which stood nearby. Her eyes remained locked on Ratio however. The creature looked back at her now and spoke to her.

She tried to say something back but her voice caught in her throat. Swallowing, she tried to move and felt herself only tense up more.

"That is not an easy request," she said in a light voice when she tried the second time. Her own voice seemed to echo in the silent, expansive cavern, however.

The creature stared at her. It felt like an hour past like that and Helena tried her best to work herself up.

"Oh man," she said, her voice remaining light, "okay, uh." She paused again as she collected her thoughts. The first question that came to mind was "how do you know my name?"

Glittering Cave – The Gorge

Kabutops looked up just in time to see a meteor headed his way. It aimed his sickle at the dragon’s stone, but it was too late, and the meteor blew up in his face. The antique staggered backwards, dazed and confused thanks to Hazard. It took a Psywave shortly after the fact. The fossil Pokémon fell to the ground, and would not be getting back up for another hundred years.

Armaldo fared a little better, lucky enough not to be hit by one of the widespread meteors. The sudden drop of Draco Meteor had distracted it from Zack, and the Armald had to look for its target once more. By the time Zack was in sight again, the second Water Gun fired.

Armaldo shot back with Rock Blast, sending several small stones Zack’s way, but none of them intercepted the Water Gun, and Armaldo was forced to take another long nap.

One more prehistoric Pokémon would take its place: a Cradily, hopping very slowly to see what was going on. It wasn’t particularly hungry like the others, but these whippersnappers had interrupted its nap and goshnabbit, it’d be on them like white on rice if it’d get them out of the gorge.

Cradily stuck its neck out and burped an Energy Ball towards Zack and Clauncher. The sphere of green solar power provided a fleeting light source that passed by the shimmering crystals.

****

The Aerodactyl had blindsided Jump and Aaliyah, its wings wrapped around her puffy frame and threatening to close in. Aaliyah pushed back, but she just wasn’t strong enough to resist. “s**t s**t s**t s**t shiiiiiiiit.”

Jump returned Aaliyah, removing most of the mass between Aerodactyl’s wings. The Flare Admin slipped out of the predator’s grasp and plopped down to the ground below, leaving Aerodactyl to chomp on nothing.

“Shiiiiiiit s**t s**t s**t s**t.” Jump released Aaliyah again and hopped back on, flying towards where he thought Zack would be. He was positive that the Aerodactyl was still hot on his heels, and that it was probably faster than his Altaria, so he ordered an “Agility!” to speed things up.

“Grab on!” he yelled to Zack, holding out a hand as Aaliyah swooped to Zack’s location. If he could, he’d hoist the trainer onto Aaliyah’s back and continue looking for a way out.

****

Hexum’s Aura Sphere had failed, which only served to make him furious. Almost at the gorge floor, he faced the Tyrantrum with a livid scowl and held up both of his palms.

Another dome of Aura formed, this time in front of him, meeting Tyrantrum’s headbutt head on and shielding him from direct contact. It didn’t stop all the damage, and Hexum felt himself rush backwards. He lifted up his feet, allowing them to plant into the rock rather than his spine. His knees buckled and strained under the immense power of the King of Dinosaurs, making a noise similar to mangled metal.

The Mega Lucario’s eyes met Tyrantrum’s ferocious one. His Aura vision was back in full force, yet his rage blinded him to everything around him but his enemy. All he saw was something he needed to obliterate, and the color red. The pain drove him further into rage, and he howled in the dinosaur’s face.

The Aura shield compressed for a second, before becoming a massive laser emanating from Hexum’s palms. It lit up the cave in a brilliant flash of light. The Focus Blast was a continuous stream, a beam of Aura that would threaten to push the Tyrantrum far across the cave unless the Despot could somehow avoid it.

If it worked Hexum wouldn’t stop there, keeping the beam going while swinging it around in a full circle where it would be a problem for everyone on the gorge floor. He knew there were other Pokémon in the darkness he could fight. The primal urge to prove himself the most powerful of them all overcame him as he screamed.

It mattered not to Kiedis if the Scizor’s attack was a kick or a knee. The bear’s little feet pressed harder in the earth, cracking the stone beneath him as his Cross Chop’s startup met the Quick Attack directly like planned.

Écarlate’s superior limb range had been an issue before, but now it was working in Kiedis’s favor. By the time the Metal Claw swung in, Kiedis had already uncrossed his arms in an effort to fling back the mantis to the other side of the room.

The Clash of Route 9

Banksy twisted in place, Rapid Spinning away the debris Hippowdon’s entrance had launched towards her. Salieri didn’t hear Roy’s command over the sudden rush of Sandstorm. She covered her mouth with the back of her hand, wishing that she had purchased Go-Goggles when she had the chance.

The tiling underneath Banksy was crackling: Excadrill was coming up again. She reared back, and Sal almost fell off. “Whoa girl, chill!”

Her forelegs popped out of her shell, and when the drill mole rose up, she was ready to catch it.

****

A figure in a thick, brown hooded cloak sat on an idle Gogoat, looking over both Ambrette Town and Route 9 from high up on the mountainside through a telescope. He was short, most features obscured by his outfit except for his sunglasses and black goatee.

“She’s gone into the center, I’ve lost sight of her,” he spoke into his Holocaster. There was no response on the other end, but he knew his contact was listening. Patience was one of his few virtues, and he waited diligently for something to change.

And change it did, when Banksy burst up from within the Pokémon Center, holding onto an Excadrill with her forelegs. The spiraling motion of the mole was transferred onto her, and as she spun, Salieri clung tightly onto the tortoise’s back for dear life.

The cloaked man took a Pokéball off his belt. “She’s in my sights. I have a clear shot.”
Take it, Faust, but don't shoot to kill. Over and out,” came an electronically distorted woman's voice from the other side. It was deep, and sounded jaded.

Faust hung up his call and lobbed the Pokéball in the air.

****

“MERRRRRRRDE!” Salieri screamed over the air blasting her in the face. Banksy continued to go higher, until she came to a sudden stop a hundred feet over the center. With a tiny smirk, she looked Excadrill in the eyes, and dropped the mole. Excadrill was falling down on a path back to the center.

Banksy righted herself, allowing Sal to clamber back onto her back, then jetted down to where the Route 9 gate once stood. It appeared that no more wild Pokémon were coming out of the cave’s woodwork, but the ones that had already come out were pissed. “Banksy, I’m going in! Make a fire wall!”

The Torkoal nodded, and with great pleasure bucked Salieri off her back. She lowered herself to the ground, right in front of the incoming hoard. Fire flared from her nostrils, becoming a wicked spiral that snaked across the area. Route 9’s gate had been replaced by a Fire Spin whipping horizontally between two titantic walls of stone. The hoard stopped, flames licking their faces as they dared not pass, though some of the smarter ones began to climb the rock face in an effort to get around.

Salieri knew it would take all of Banksy’s concentration to keep the Fire Spin going, and it did nothing to stop the Pokémon already rampaging in Ambrette Town. But it was all she had to give. Now it’s my turn.

She landed in the middle of the hoard and released Durendal, Biz Marquis and Veillantif. The three of them formed a circle in the dust cloud, backs to each other while the hoard rotated around them ready to strike under these new circumstances. Many of them had been weakened by the constant fighting, but they still had the will to battle. Covered in fresh blood and scratches from the Sandstorm, Sal cracked her neck and cleared her throat.

“I’m having a REALLY WEIRD DAY!!” she roared at the wild Pokémon, actually managing to scare a few of them with her savage snarl and intense amber eyes. “So this is nothing personal! Veil, you’re with me!”

Her Horsea hopped into her hand and Sal gripped tightly, pistol style. Electricty crackled along Dune’s hand and Biz pulled a Needle Sword out of his back. With a collective cry, the hoard charged at Sal’s party, and Sal’s party charged back.

Glittering Cave – Mine Control Center

Écarlate's leg was flung back but he managed to slam his mangled foot into the ground, spinning himself to put more force into his Metal Claw as his body off-set.

With Kiedis not blocking the Metal Claw, the force of it should send the Teddiursa flying toward another wall of crystals.

Écarlate, meanwhile, collapsed to his knees. The crack that had formed on his shin was a sign that Teddiursa was not a Pokemon to be trifled with. Both of Écarlate's pinsirs opened and he began to fire off a flury of Flash Cannons, aiming them at each major collection of crystals.

Unless Kiedis stopped him, he would quickly destroy the light in the room, giving him a chance to escape through the darkness.

The Clash of Route 9 - The Center Battle

Grant's groan increased in volume and turned, seconds later, into him spitting out sand. Pain stabbed into his back as well as the backs of his arms and legs. He wasn't sure of the damage, but he knew that he had to keep moving. Grant grabbed onto the center counter and pulled himself up to his feet.

Both arms work, same with my legs.

He looked over the counter to see the battle. He caught sight of the shadows and their movements, but nothing he could make out.

Had he been able to see, he'd catch sight of Mayan creating a temporary hole for himself in the sand storm as he pulled himself upward, it gave him brief sight of Excadrill's falling body. Enough for him to target the Pokemon and fire a Psybeam.

***

Hippowdon roared from his giant, massive and powerful mouth as he reared himself up on his hind legs in response to Feraligatr jumping onto his back. Going up would prove hard enough for anyone to hold on, considering the size and awkward shape of Hippowdon.

Coming back down would likely remove the Feraligatr if he managed to stay on, and it would also give Hippowdon the chance to fire off a Sand Tomb from his mouth, an attack that, if it hit, would begin to actively bury and trap the water type Pokemon.

If by some grace, Feraligatr managed to stay on, Hippowdon's only choice then would be to roll over.

The Clash of Route 9 - The Center Battle

When Excadrill saw the look in Banksy's eye, he knew he'd ******** up. Ground types in the sky were like fish pokémon out of water, and he was lucky that the Torkoal chose to just drop him rather than take him out with a fire attack. The mole pokémon plummeted like a stone, twisting in the air to point downwards with his drills, making himself more aerodynamic, speeding past Mayan's long range Psybeam with ease.

He caught a glimpse of the human town, now wholly overrun by pokémon. Humans battled in the streets, amidst ruins. Once there had been many dozens, all eager to fight, now there were only a few handfuls, their attacks desperate and lame. Excadrill spun like a drill as he neared the center's roof, smashing through the ceiling and flipping on impact so that he'd land on his feet. He slammed down, turning his fall into a ultra-powerful Earthquake, nourished by Hippowdon's sand. It would make the center walls wobble and split, and they may as well be made of paper.

---

'You took your time,' Roy called over to Feraligatr as the water type rode the bucking Hippowdon. Instead of getting thrown with the downwards motion, the water type would hook his claws around Hippowdon's vents while they jetted sand. The force would eventually rip the scales from his flesh, but for now they'd hold him in place, allowing him to open his mouth and blast Hippowdon's skull with a Hydro Pump while it was preoccupied with its Sand Tomb.

Well, that's what would have happened. Instead, when Feraligatr's jaw hung open, all that escaped was a raspy gasp of hot breath. The alligator pokémon paused, almost embarrassed. If Hippowdon continued to thrash about, Feraligatr would surely be thrown, smashing into an already ruined promotional display, which would crumble with his weight.

'What,' Roy moaned, 'Whaddya mean you've run out of water?!'

Glittering Cave - The Tunnels

Ratio appeared to look through the girl. He had little need to read her expression when he could sense her emotions. Fear pulsed along her heartbeat with overwhelming force, but an old hand like Ratio's could look through the fear, and find something deeper. Something more interesting.

He flexed his jaw, and his eyes shifted a little narrower. In certain light, it might almost look like he was smiling. 'You have strong eyes,' he said. 'Despite your fear, you remain calm. Moments ago, I killed a woman before you, yet here you stand, whole. You're a warrior, Helena.'

Ratio took a step forward, holding out his hand, which was encased in its intricate blacksteel gauntlet, as if for her to take it. 'You're like me.'

Glittering Cave - The Gorge

A stone exploded against Zack's shoulder, twisting his torso back. The hail Armaldo had launched before going down was still hanging in the air, soundless, almost moving in slow motion through the dark. Zack grit his teeth, squeezing Clauncher while aiming it at the floor, making the pokémon launch a burst of water that would fling them both to the side. Zack skidded as he hit the floor, the pain between his shoulder and chest flaring up something fierce.

The cavern lit up with green light. Zack barely enough time to catch his breath, and another enemy was already on him. He clenched his teeth, caught on the back foot and unable to move out of the Energy Ball in time.

'Grab on!' Zack reacted without thinking, grabbing Jump's arm as the admin swooped by on an Altaria. Zack slung a leg over the flying type's back, finding its flesh somewhere in its cloud-like down. His injured shoulder wrenched with the sudden movement, screaming in his ear, but he had to ignore it. Grabbing Jump's back as they flew away, Zack braced himself from the spurt of debris that kicked up when Energy Ball exploded where he'd been standing.

He half turned, spotting an Aerodactyl flapping hard and chasing after them. With his good arm, he aimed Clauncher and fired a few shots. Hitting a moving target while moving yourself wasn't exactly easy, and the flying dinosaur swooped around, effortlessly avoiding the Water Guns. Zack turned back. If they were smart, flying types could be next to impossible to pin down with basic attacks. They had to limit the Aerodactyl's movements.

Zack leant forward and shouted into Jump's ear. 'Go up! Get us out of here!'

If they went skyward and the Aerodactyl followed, the dinosaur wouldn't be as mobile as if it were flying horizontally. Gravity would pull against it, slowing it down, for one. And with any luck, that would make all the difference.

---

Tyrantrum roared as it rammed against Hexum's aura shield. Its massive hook-clawed feet ground against the gorge floor, ripping up chunks of rock and kicking away the debris. But for all its strength, the dinosaur king couldn't shift Hexum's shield.

When the shield compressed into a Focus Blast beam, everything holding Tyrantrum back fell away for half a second. In this time, the despot pokémon roared hungrily, its eyes a rage-blind white as it aimed to Crunch Hexum one last time. Regardless, the beam would go through, launching the dinosaur king far back, crashing against an outcrop of rocks. After taking a Focus Blast so close to his brain, Tyrantrum wasn't going anywhere for a while.

The Clash of Route 9 - The Center Battle

Death by a thousand cuts was something Grant had read about once upon a time. An idea that seemed absurd to him until now. Caught in the sandstorm, he watched the shadows battle, the explosions of sand dictating the large movements of allies and enemies.

"Mayan," he said, surprised at the weakness in his voice, "you're on your own buddy."

Grant collapsed back behind the counter. He released Priscilla the Audino and pushed himself aside to prop up against the counter. He sit like that, back where Nurses usually stand. "I don't know how bad it is." Grant told Priscilla and she nodded in understanding.

A moment later, the earthquake came, causing the counter that was set into the floor to crack and break along with the tile beneath them. Priscilla squealed and grabbed Grant, bathing him in Healing Pulse to try and fight through the damage of the earthquake

Mayan, however, levitated. Excadrill's entrance was difficult to miss, and it let Mayan target him again, letting off the peculiar energy of Extrasensory this time.

***

Hippowdon did indeed continue to buck, until Feraligatr was thrown into the stand. With a massive roar, he charged forward, mouth remaining open to try and Crunch the water type between his massive jaws.

Glittering Cave - Diancie's Domain

"There can be more than one of you, right?" Helena said, her tone uneasy. She did not approach the man, though some part of it said that she shouldn't say no if he pressed the matter. One thing that Helena was confident of, if it came to blows, this man would kill her.

She hadn't trained for that. Hadn't prepared for dying. Heck, she'd only been in one fight her entire life.

"How do you know my name and what do yo want?" Helena asked again. The being was cryptic and terrifying, but Helena had no other leads to go off of. Figure out what he wants, maybe -probably - give it to him, maybe not die horribly and get out of here alive.

Glittering Cave – The Gorge

[And stay out!] the Cradily called after Zack and Jump before hopping back to its hole in the gorge wall to go back to sleep. [Damn kids…]

Jump looked over his shoulder at the Aerodactyl flying after them. “Okay, okay! Aaliyah!” The Altaria pulled up sharply, hoping the Aerodactyl would take its time to follow. The dinosaur was rusty, but not slow on the uptake. It was only a moment before it adjusted itself and continued pursuit upwards.

Right before Tyrantrum’s jaws snapped off Hexum’s head, Hexum growled and intensified the beam, pushing the Dinosaur King backwards faster and barely avoiding certain death. Grunting, he pulled the beam to the side and swept it around the gorge. Jump could hear the tumbling of loosened stone and the hollering of wounded prehistoric fighters before the beam dispersed. Afterwards, the only thing he heard was Hexum howling to the sky.

[The Despot has been defeated! All hail the new Dinosaur King!] the Cradily cried from its hole in the wall with feverish patriotism. It was joined by a few halfhearted “Woohoo”’s in Pokéspeak from the fossil Pokémon in the midst of losing consciousness.

“Shoot better!” Jump yelled to Zack as he took off the blue gem ring on his finger. Far below, Hexum’s body glowed bright white before he returned to his normal form. The Lucario’s eyes rolled into the back of his head and he passed out. A red zigzag of light recalled Hexum inside the Pokéball in Jump’s hand. He looked at the ball sadly.

“Sorry, buddy.”

Glittering Cave – Mine Control Center

The Teddiursaring was clocked on the side of the head, spitting out a little more blood on the ground as he upper body twisted away. Before he looked up, the Flash Cannons were fired, and the cave was slowly turned pitch black.

Catching his breath, Kiedis sniffed the air with his tremendous sense of smell. Écarlate’s scent wasn’t as strong as before, only lingering in the room. The Scizor was escaping. Kiedis scoffed. [Go ahead and run. You’re not worth the chase.]

Once the Scizor’s scent was gone completely, the Teddiursaring yawned and collapsed on his back to Rest. He snored loudly and scratched his stomach. It was super adorable.

((Goodbye, Old Man Cradily. You will be missed))

The Clash of Route 9 - The Center Battle

Extrasensory belted Excadrill on the back, almost bowling the mole pokémon over. It was a strong attack, but Excadrill was too amped up to really register the pain. He looked back over his shoulder, locking Mayan with a glare. Then in one fast motion, he scooped up a clunk of floor and launched it at the Claydol with a backwards swipe.

He used the swipe to turn around, and the hail of debris as a distraction and smokescreen. His speed was double in the sandstorm, allowing him to quickly sprint across the length of the pokémon center, kick off the ground, and slash at Mayan's chest with a super effective Shadow Claw. If it hit, the doll pokémon would be hit hard and sent into a spiralling fall, wide open for another Shadow Claw attack, this time aimed to impale the pokémon through its core.

---

Hippowdon was ridiculously heavy. Feraligatr's hands snatched out, grabbing the charging pokémon's maw and forcing it to stay open through the Crunch attack. It was less than an arm's length from snapping down on the water type, his arms shaking and quivering with exhaustion and strain, teeth mashed together hard. If Feraligatr had any water left, this battle would already be over; a quick blast to the inside of Hippowdon's mouth would destroy it. Sadly that was not the case.

As it stood, he was staring down the barrel of a cannon. As soon as Hippowdon realised that another Sand Tomb, or similar attack, would almost certainly hit, Feraligatr risked being blown apart at point blank range. So, as he realised this, he was prepared for such an eventuality. If Hippowdon attempted to launch an attack from its mouth, Feraligatr would use all his strength to slam the ground type's mouth closed. If the attack had nowhere to go, it would stay in Hippowdon's mouth, damaging the pokémon with its own attack.

The Clash of Route 9 - Spikes Passage

'Well would you look at that,' Dexio gasped in light of Banksy's fire wall. It glowed orange across the route, lighting up the pokémon that marched across Route 9 towards Ambrette. He doubted that it would have done much to stop them earlier; the rampaging pokémon hadn't stopped for much of anything. But they had ceased crawling out of the ground, and that suggested a change in their collective mindset. Whatever was causing them to go wild wasn't effecting them as much.

'Defender Blue,' Sina said, staring through the binoculars and looking excited. 'You have to see this.'

She tossed the binoculars over, and Dexio caught them with a snap of his hand. He peered down the scope, and his mouth hung open for a second. And a second later, it drew into a satisfied smile. The Route 9 pokémon were running up to Banksy's fire wall, but going no further. In fact-

'They're retreating,' Dexio grinned.

Glittering Cave - Diancie's Domain

Ratio immediately understood Helena's joke. She was quite witty for a 16 year old. He showed no signs of amusement, instead rolling his head to the side, continuing to examine her.

'First,' Ratio said, reaching for Helena, taking a strand of her hair with his thumb and brushing it back. 'Tell me something. What do you think of this country? Of its culture and people. What do you think of the nobility?'

Glittering Cave - The Gorge

'I'm trying!' Zack roared back over his shoulder, firing off more volleys of water. He had to be careful, too many and Clauncher would run out, effectively making it useless. He grit his teeth, feeling the pull of gravity threaten to wrench him from Aaliyah's back. A sudden black pit opened in his gut. Aerodactyl was beginning to catch up.

Aaliyah was fast, but her cargo couldn't help weighing her down. With each mighty flap of its wings, Aerodactyl inched ever closer. Zack looked ahead, spotting the stronger gemlight of the upper tunnels. It looked like an enormous glowing gash framed by black. It was still too far away. Aerodactyl was so close, Zack could see the creases in its scales, even in the dim light. He fired a few more shots of water, two missed as Aerodactyl swerved, but one hit, glancing just below its eye. The prehistoric pokéon winced, then screeched in rage. A few more flaps and Aerodactyl would catch them, its jaws big enough to bite into all three of them at once, each tooth a tiny saw blade that could rend through flesh and bone with ease.

'Jump,' Zack shouted over the rush over wind, 'Just keep flying. I have this.'

What he had, he wasn't too sure, not until he jumped. Zack fell a short distance, throwing his arms out and twisting his body. He had to make sure he fell away from Aerodactyl's open maw, but not so far that he missed the pokémon entirely and fell back to the bottom of the gorge. Death on either side, Zack swung around as he fell.

He missed Aerodactyl's neck, hands slipping against its smooth scales. He continued to fall, pumped full of adrenaline, making everything go slow motion. There was a hump poking out of the dinosaur's back between its huge flapping wings. Zack's hand snatched out, trying to grasp it. His fingers took hold, but his grip was too weak in the rush of wind. After a second, his fingers pried free one by one. Zack swore, falling away, throwing his other arm up in desperation.

Clauncher snapped its one big claw, closing it around Aerodactyl's hump and curling its legs around Zack's fingers to strengthen his grip. Zack stopped dead, dangling by a water type thread. The ancient pokémon screeched in pain, throwing its wings to the side to halt its ascent. Zack carried on upward, almost flying over Aerodactyl's head. He managed to plant a foot firmly on the dinosaur's back, holding tight with Clauncher while Aerodactyl flapped hard, shaking about, trying hard to throw the trainer off.

It lurched to the side violently, freeing itself of Clauncher's grip. The water type's claws sliced through the dinosaur's rock flesh, freeing two lines of dark blood. Zack threw his arm around Aerodactyl's neck, swinging underneath its massive, snapping jaw, nothing below him but a whole lot of air and a sudden stop. Aerodactyl turned its head down as Zack planted a foot on its shoulder, where the wing met the body, and hiked up a step. The dinosaur screeched, but couldn't quite get the angle to bite into the trainer. Zack grit his teeth as he came up level with Aerodactyl's glaring, ravenous expression. Its teeth shone with saliva, its head turning to try and take a bite.

'I don't think so!' Zack shouted with full Castelian grit, swinging his free fist and pounding one of Aerodactyl's eyeballs. That, at least, wasn't protected by rock, and would hurt no matter whose fist hit it. Aerodactyl howled with pain, bucking again, trying to sling Zack away from it. The trainer hoisted himself up, finding his way around the flying type's body until he had both legs either side of its neck. He locked his arm underneath Aerodactyl's throat, pulling back hard until it was looking directly upwards.

With one final effort, he aimed Clauncher at Aerodactyl's rump and fired a blast, giving it the Rhyhorn treatment. With a frantic flapping of wings, Aerodactyl flew, carrying both it and the trainer towards the mouth of the gorge.

The Clash of Route 9 - The Center Battle

The distraction filled Mayan's vision, and he proceeded to Rapid Spin to clear it. He was aware that Excadrill probably meant to attack, so he let the Pokemon cover the distance. What he didn't account for was the speed. Excadrill's claw met it's mark and Mayan was blasted backwards.

Excadrill's second blow wouldn't be as easy to land. As Mayan flew through the air, he caught side of Excadrill and let loose the Extrasensory energy. If the force didn't stop the Pokemon, it was likely that he would flinch, missing his chance for a follow up blow - assuming he didn't outright dodge completely.

***

Hippowdon pushed against Feraligatr as their match became one of force. The large powerful jaws strained and forced the two combatants to shake, neither one of them holding complete control of the force they were exerting.

Hippowdon's next move was Sand Tomb, intended to rip Feraligatr apart with the powerful and close range force of it. When, instead, his jaw was forced shut Hippowdon simply let the sand loose through the many holes in its body. It wouldn't be as direct as with his mouth open, but at this distance it was still unlikely that Feraligatr would escape the blow.

Glittering Cave - Diancie's Domain

People weren't normally actively aware of every part of their body. Their hair fell over their head, and they forgot about it. The moment Ratio's hand touched her hair, however, Helena was aware of not just the coldness that the gauntlet radiated onto her cheek but every strand of hair that fell on her shoulders, on her face, the stray strands of her bangs that fell over her eyes.

"They dress weird and throw fancy parties," Helena said through the lump in her throat. She was suddenly aware of the awkward closeness between them but didn't move for fear that the Arcanine - Ferox - would snap off a limb to make sure she couldn't try it a second time.

"And they control Team Flare."
