Lately, it seems games have partially shifted from the katana craze into a pistol sword one.
Right off, 2 examples I know of is Cervantes in the Soul Calibur games, and Ayumi from X-Blades.
Not so recent, but still counts, I think, is Squall from FFVIII.

Pistol grip swords aren't uncommon in fencing, but i can't think of anyotn before squall that used one. The idea is that i'ts easier to handle a sword on a joint rather than a fulcrum or something, but honestly i never could get into them.
*sigh* oh well.
