The writing prompt for our final essay of my Psychology of Human Sexuality class:
You wake up in a daze and look around. Now you remember, and immediately wish you hadn’t. The bad news: Earth is decimated, its surface recently pulverized by its own nuclear resources during the third world war. The good news: you’re alive, but not for long. You rise, still shaky.
You now stand in front of an army of babies still in their cribs. You know they will survive. What is left of modern technology, including nursing robots, will look after them, teach them our language and our history. They must, for these babies are the future: they will be the last men and women on Earth.
But there is much that these robots won’t be able to teach them. And that’s where you come in. You are an educator in the field of human sexuality. Your job: to ensure the continued survival of the human race; to tell them what they need to know about how they will pass on their genes, to allow them to understand the anatomy of their own bodies and that of the opposite sex and how it all works, to tell them about intimate relationships and love, about the prevention of diseases, about the dangers of pregnancy, the misunderstandings and potential suffering of gender confusion… about who they are as sexual beings. In other words, you want to ensure not just survival of the species, but also that further generations will flourish, that they will be happy, that they will be informed in a world free of suffering and intolerance. You will draw upon as much as you have learned about human sexuality.
The problem: paper is scarce these days, and you only have four pages on which to write. You will write what you think is the most important information for them to have in your field of expertise. You must write it concisely. You must use the proper terminology. You hope they will all read it. It’s their only chance. It’s your Book of Instructions that you will leave behind as your legacy.
The future of humanity is in your hands.
What are you waiting for? You better start writing before you die.
