queerfish tourniquetsmile Harlequinns are generally white with black spots, but every so often they get black-dominant puppies. I guess it's the recessive gene. My dane's mom were both harlequinns. o_0 Genetics are funny. The only white spots George has are the typical markings of dogs though; chest, stomach, and toes...he's certainly no Harlequin(though I think they are lovely...I think all danes are lovely, really) If he's anything other black, I would say he has some mantle in him. That's all mine has, as well. That is certainly interesting! Danes are really really pretty. I love 'em. Scooby Doo!

I mean, if she was adopted by your grandparents over 5 years ago...maybe one parent was a Harlequin? I've just...I've been to lots of Dane breeders before(that's were we got Gracie, the fawn one, from) and I've done tons of research...but never seen a pure Harlequin ever come out with just those markings. I don't know if it's actually genetically7 possible, really(I took a genetics course in college. Just the one...so I could easily be wrong...just...it seems...unlikely.) But yeah, I love danes. Especially with undocked ears, because ear docking makes Toni cry. D=

My grandma only likes ear docking if its a fawn colored male. Ew. :[ as far as the possibility of one coming out black, this is the only picture I could find of a harlequin litter... @ guild sorry for spamming about danes >< @ Noriko You're snake bits are smexy Pretty :]

Ew. :[ as far as the possibility of one coming out black, this is the only picture I could find of a harlequin litter... @ guild sorry for spamming about danes >< @ Noriko You're snake bits are smexy Pretty :] Mantles often come from Harlequin breedings.
Mantles can be bred to Harlequins without the risk of producing White puppies.
Mantle bred to Mantle cannot produce HarlequinAnd on Harlequins... Harlequins sometimes can be so heavily marked that they resemble a Mantle with the only noticeable difference being that they have merle (grey) somewhere on them.(From a breeding site on Danes) They're not all Harlequins, it would seem. So, we were kindof both right. I mean, they come FROM Harlequins, but they aren't. George doesn't have any Harlequin in him...considering he has almost no white at all(he doesn't have the distinctive white neckband of a mantle, so he's not even that strain of a Harlequin) and he has absolutely no grey. It seems that it's all due to the merle gene, which was one I did not know existed in danes...though probably should have.
