They give drops, which are worth about half their value in gold. So, when they do die, it's a nice bonus
Like, my turtles, when they eventually die, will give me roughly 40k each. That's several MCs

In terms of items you sell. I've never had one actually give back gold.

The fish die, and leave 'drops'. You can sell the drops in the Market, which are typically worth about half of the value of the fish it died from.
Considering almost all of my fish I get from Daily Chance, that amounts to several thousand gold in 8 weeks.
