In the United States, the "New World Order" conspiracy theory is a major extreme-right-wing bogeyman (i.e., the types who think Democrats and Republicans are Dirty Commies). In a nutshell: Supposedly, the United Nations is actually plotting to conquer the world by using the president of the United States, who is actually The Mole, to hand over national sovereignty. After that happens, U.N. troops will swoop down in their black helicopters, round up all the brave anarcho-capitalist dissenters and toss them into death camps in Mississippi, and establish a global Communist dictatorship. And outlaw God and guns, allow hordes of scary brown people from Mexico to live in Texas, and let gay people get married. They've been attempting this at least since the 1960s, and only the steady stream of anti-communist pamphlets from the John Birch Society has been stopping them. Or something.
