Rina entered the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom not knowing what to expect. Of course, she had heard many awful stories about the dark arts, so in truth she was rather nervous to have anything to do with them. But the small voice of courage in her head urged her that it would all be fine, and this experience would only help her get stronger.
She took her seat nearby a familiar Ravenclaw boy, whom she had seen in her last Charms class as well. He seemed like a very nervous person, and part of her wondered if maybe he needed a friend. After he answered the teacher's question, Rina nodded her head a little in agreement. He seemed like he had studied already, which didn't really surprise her from what she'd heard of Ravenclaws. She heard they had a whole library in their common room. Which actually didn't sound like such a bad idea, but Rina was starting to become attached to the comfort of the Hufflepuff dormitories.
"Spells like Jinxes and Hexes can be called Dark Arts" she added when the boy trailed off. "And Curses and probably poisons. Anything that's meant to hurt you."

Things aren't easy So just believe me now If you can keep it cool now And never make a sound.
Shui entered class doing his best to not be tardy. He got a seat near the middle back portion and hoped no one minded sitting by him he has note taking supplies ready fo go. Hey even on the first day of class the teacher may five notes or homework. Shui liked to be prepared. The teacher asked tjem to define dark arts. He may not have as glorious of an awnser but he did want to try. "Dark Arts are the spells meant to hurt others or even normal spells that are not nessasarilly bad spells being used to hurt." Shui awnswered when his raised hand was called upon. He was usully quiet so he spoke louder than he usully did so he could be heard. A curse of being so soft spoken.

Nico trotted into class his tie looked better this time. He had some upper year show him how and a way to just slip it on and off with out the need to always untie it. Such a morning frustration this tie was. He rarely got so annoyed that it made his hair all orange but now it was back to his natural green. He sat behind a Hufflepuff girl, making sure tjere wjere food spots for Sam and Riddles, and was listening to the other awnsers. They pretty much had it covered. Nico couldn't think of really anything to add. He had read the definitions in the book but it felt lazy to just repeat the book.

Rhona Finnea Dubhach Halfblood | First Year | Gryffindor Location: DDA Class | Company: Classmates | Mood: Excitement
Walking into the Defense Against the Dark arts classroom it was hard to miss the giant skeleton of some sort of magical creature suspended above them. Rhona stopped at the doorway in awe, taking in the view and checking out what other decor there was inside the classroom.
Her first instinct was to stop and ask right away about what she was looking at. But the new Professor, a woman who seemed almost a bit menacing in her chair at the front as she stroked the cat in her lap, didn't seem like the sort to appreciate questions out of turn. At the end of class then.
Rhona bit the inside of mouth to curb the impulse, taking a seat in the second row. Never the first because that meant there was nothing between you and the professor, and not the back because she thought that this class might actually be a very interesting one.
As Professor Cohen started to talk, Rhona decided that she liked the woman. Instead of just treating them like children, the way she put her words made them sound more like equals.
Rhona began to raise her hand, but put it down as her classmates began to list off what had already popped into her head. It wasn't like she disliked talking in class, but sometimes it was nice to sit back and take it all in instead.
OoC:
Compassionate She feels a lot of compassion for other people, and especially animals when they are suffering. This leads to her wanting to do something about it or a very strong opinion towards the situation. Independent Already used to responsibility and going off with her brother quite often already in early life, Rhona has a strong sense of self-independence. Dependable She likes being seen as a responsible person who can be trusted, and that includes whatever someone may ask her to do. Stubborn When she thinks she's right and gets into an argument with someone, she won't back down very easily. If someone tells her no, she very often resists. Commonly, this comes from her not liking being treated like and kid and she feels like people don't respect her opinions. Stingy She really doesn't do sharing, no matter what it is. Having a twin and sharing so many things in their lives made her very protective of what little she could completely call her own. Energetic She seems to have an almost bottomless source of energy to draw from, mostly when working on something she's interested in. But when she crashes, she crashes hard.

Fanchon almost languished at her desk, looking vaguely irked as the students came in and took their seats. Finally, with a small sigh, she stood up, stretched a little, and wand in hand, began her pacing up and down the rows of desks and chairs, careful not to trip over anyone's bag. "You're all in luck, as today we'll be learning one of the most simple- and essential- spells known to wizards. Some of you may already be familiar with this, as it's not unusual to simply pick it up from older students as you go about your daily lives." She held her wand aloft, made sure they were all looking at it, and enunciated carefully, "LOO-mos," while moving it in a loop:
And then a sharp wave-like motion, saying, "NOCK-ss,":
The bright light extinguished itself immediately. "That," said Fanchon, "Is the wand lighting and extinguishing charm. As you can see, it's obviously very useful when you are in a dark place, or going about at night. It was not, surprisingly, invented until the year 1772, by a witch named Levina Monkstanley, who worked for the Ministry of Magic, and first used it to find a fallen quill. However, credit was almost stolen from her a German wizard name Garvin Lugner, who said he had invented the spell while developing his Instant Darkness Powder. He was lying, of course, and his powder was found to only dim a room slightly, rather than throw it into darkness."
She stowed her wand away. "Now, one of the positive side effects of the charm is that it also repels many spectral creatures, as well as any dark spirits, so it can be very useful to keep your wand lit when in a place where you may encounter anything of that nature. There's really nothing much to this- the wand movements are most important, as well as making sure your wand stays lit. It's no good if you can only keep the charm up for a few moments, so I want to see everyone's wand lit for at least five minutes. I'll set a timer."

Karina sat silently with the rest of the students waiting for class to begin. She felt like they had all learned rather quickly not to misbehave in this class - Professor Cohen was quite intimidating.
The demonstration only lasted a few moments, so in no time at all Rina was taking out her wand and getting ready to cast her spell. Swirling her wand in a tight loop, she called out "Lumos!" and watched as her wand tip lit up with a bright light that surrounded her entire workstation in a brilliant glow. Her smile was almost as bright as her wand was. 'Okay, concentrate,' she thought, willing the light to remain steady. She had to keep this up for five minutes... It was just a matter of focus.

Varus took his seat, still very much intimidated by Professor Cohen, but definitely more comfortable in school. The notebook and quill was placed quickly on his desk, and he organized his notes for today's topic, starting with a header of a simple Lesson 1. He made sure to avoid any possible eye contact with the teacher, nearly sucking a breath as she went past him and his row. When she raised her wand, Varus made sure to get a good look without bothering anyone. The loop motion seemed easy to remember, especially for an important spell like this. He was already practicing the movements with his finger.
The details were a lot, but Varus made sure to write down important names and dates. By the mention of keeping the light up for at least five minutes, he chewed on his lip. One of the first people to cast the spell was Karina, and he looked at her briefly, focusing on his wand when he saw the tip of hers light up. He took a deep breath, removing unnecessary thoughts and concentrated on doing the movement he had practiced just moments ago. "Lumos," he moved his wand like how Professor Cohen had, and the tip lit up. He sighed in relief. "Nox," he repeated the wave-like motion, then the light immediately disappeared. He nodded to himself. So far so good.
"Lumos," he repeated. Now all he had to do was concentrate and hope nothing happens that would let his light go off early.

Fanchon waited until the first years were seated before she started the day's lesson, Jacques prowling around the edge of the classroom. "Flipendo, or the Knockback Jinx, is a very useful spell, especially for a young and inexperienced witch or wizard. It's not difficult to cast and it can be very handy when you find yourself backed into a corner." The Haitian woman gestured with her wand at an unoccupied chair close to her. "Flipendo!" the chair skittered backwards, toppling over with a wooden thud.
"As you can see, it works on objects as well as people. However, people can still get up, even after you knock them over, so I wouldn't expect to win any fights with this jinx," she said dryly. "Depending on the force used, it might just shove someone back roughly, or knock them completely off their feet. I wouldn't expect to send anyone- or anything- flying on your first few tries, however. And be aware that it can be blocked with a simple shield charm or just dodged." The professor nodded to the board. "There's what your wand movement should look like."
"And the light of the jinx should be blue. Now, I don't want you accidentally- or intentionally- hurting each other, so I want a row of desks across the room and everyone behind them. On my count, try to knock the desks back- after I'm behind them as well," Fanchon said hastily. "Alright, en, de, twa-,"

Fanchon sat in her very comfortable chair, stroking Jacques, her cat, curled up in her lap, as though she were a Bond villain, and gave the room one final once over. She had enough tables and chairs to fit everyone, she'd made sure the room was spotless, in case anyone had any dust allergies, and she'd tried to make it.... if not quite welcoming, at least slightly less intimidating, although that was a bit difficult when the decor of the room literally included a giant skeleton of some magical beast suspended above the class. Ah well. They'd have to get used to Hogwarts's quirks at some point, and DADA was a notoriously challenging class, although not quite to the level of say, Transfiguration or Potions. However, it was extremely important, and if she had her way, she'd make it mandatory for all seven years. Alas, she could not have her way, so she only had five years to drill as much knowledge as possible through their hairy little heads. If she could make sure all of them could cast a proper shield charm, patronus, disarm someone, and defeat a boggart, she'd be happy. It would raise their life expectancy significantly.
As the first years filtered into the room, she observed them stoically, not rising from her seat (and disturbing Jacques' nap) until everyone had taken their seats and were (mostly) quiet. "Bonjou. Good morning," she translated calmly, confident that her accent, while strong, was not an excuse for them to not listen. "I am Fanchon Cohen, and I am responsible for ensuring that all of you can recognize dark magic, and properly defend yourselves against it. My rules are written on the board. Follow them, don't follow them, it's your choice. This class is largely about choices. I'm here to demonstrate to you how to make good ones. Can anyone," she scanned the room, "Tell me what the Dark Arts are? In some magical schools, they comprise their own, separate subject, but here at Hogwarts we take a more... benevolent approach."

The sky we’re looking at today
♪♫ SonoraLi first year || Ravenclaw || halfblood _______________
Sonora's experience with Defense Against the Dark Arts came mainly from stories from her maternal grandparents, a cursebreaker-auror duo. When she was young, Granda and Grandma had made up fantastic tales about scary boggarts in tombs and shadow monsters hiding in the nooks and crannies of the Cliffs of Moher. She found out later they weren't just stories, but--well all of that was to say, Sonora was looking forward to DADA.
Sonora walked into the classroom awestruck, her eyes on the giant skeleton suspended above them. She half expected it to either fall down at any moment or start moving. Even though she was early enough to take a seat almost anywhere, she took a seat in the second row--clear enough to see the board, but also where she figured she could keep an eye on the skeleton.
Professor Cohen frightened her a little, but also intrigued her and when she started class, Sonora raised her hand tentatively. When called on, she answered, "Dark Arts cover the more harmful side of spells, like curses, jinxes, and uhm--hexes?"

Vespera sat in the class near the back and began writing notes, when the class was asked what the Dark Arts were she wrote on her paper: Dark Arts: the art of Dark Magic. Power to your hearts desire.
Could she use the dark power and fall into a stereotypical slytherin of her books of long ago? She hoped not, but it was nice to at least have something written down. She jotted down more notes, hoping not to be called on to give her answer. "Speak "

Fanchon nodded in the direction of the Ravenclaw girl, Sonora, who answered her query, albeit somewhat hesitantly. "Correct. 10 points to Ravenclaw. The Dark Arts are comprised of any magic used with ill intent, typically jinxes, hexes, and curses. In ascending order, jinxes are typically seen as minor inconveniences or mischievous, hexes are a bit nastier and designed to hurt or hinder, and curses are fairly severe, made to severely injure or destroy. To be more clear, you might find yourself in detention for a jinx or hex, and expelled and stripped of your wand for a curse."
She offered a slightly sardonic smile. "That is not to say all curses are evil and should be avoided. Some have very useful purposes, and could be the difference between life and death, should it come down to that. But they are not spells to take lightly. All magic has consequences, and dark magic has consequences that often cannot be undone. However, even 'light' magic, such as charms, can be used for sinister purposes. Take the fire charm for example," she briefly ignited a piece of parchment on her desk, before quickly extinguishing it. "Fire has many uses, but it can also cause terrible suffering."

Kaden took up his now usual seat toward the back of the room, listening to what was going on and quickly realizing that this would probably be one his most challenging, frightening classes. He had gotten through listening to what felt like half of the lecture before he even thought to open his notebook and write anything down. The skeleton in the room was distracting him - he had no idea if it was like one of the science models at his old school, or.... and he gulped.... if it was real.
Mostly, he just did his best to stay out of the teacher's sight, because she was fiercely intimidating. And he didn't know how well he would handle being under her scrutiny just yet.

☀ JONAH LANE ☀ Ravenclaw │ First Year │ Eleven Years Old
Jonah could not believe he had just slept in so terribly late! Sure, he had been up in the common room until nearly 4 AM reading up on magical creatures, but… To sleep in until the end of block 3 was just ridiculous. He realized he should probably set a bed time for himself at this point and made a mental note to at least attempt. Jonah had to practically throw on his robes and charge across the castle if he had any hopes for making it to class on time; unfortunately, the trip from Ravenclaw Tower down to the DADA classroom was longer than he’d prayed for and he was forced to sneak his disheveled self into the classroom, taking a seat in the back to keep any disturbance to a minimum. He nodded apologetically to the professor when he had stepped in, and now he was busying himself with taking notes, hoping to keep to himself today as much as possible. He was sure Professor Cohen was a nice lady, but frankly he found her just intimidating enough not to dare come in like this again.

Eiji rushed into the DADA class room and flopped into the closest seat. He hastily pulled out his trusty sugar quills, ink and parchment and began to frantically write down everything the professor had covered so far. He really couldn't believe he had actually fallen asleep. It didn't matter that he had finally crashed out at 6 am, he hadn't expected to fall asleep until at lease a few nights into the term. He nervously bit his lip. He hoped the professor didn't hold being late against him. He was so looking forward to this class.
