They are a herd of "shrine maidens" living on a mist-shrouded mountain covered in thick forest that over looks the ocean. These Soquili have an ability to predict natural disasters by reading/interpreting the signs and weather patterns. Members of the herd feel honor-bound to warn neighboring herds or non-herd Soquili, but their presence has become ominous and the herd has been nicknamed the 'Doom Herd' by outsiders. Some even go as far to blame and ostracize the herd for causing the disasters that they so desperately try to warn and save other from. This fear and loathing keeps the herd isolated, and as a result they are wary to let anyone within their territory for fear of persecution.
