Hello AFG. I'm posting here because I am indeed new here, but also because I need to pose a question and I didn't know what better place to put it. I didn't want to take up space in the guild by starting another topic.
First, I need to give some background story. I don't mean to give away my life story, but I feel it necessary for the question I will pose. I promise this will be the only time.
I am 21 years old, male, and in college. I will be 22 next month. The "cardboard box" avatar doesn't mean anything, it's just an alternate costume for now. When you reach my question, you will understand that I don't want to unintentionally sway your judgment with any other avatar.
I suppose a lot of you started out the same way (maybe not), but here goes. I have always had a fascination with some species of animals ever since I was born. I think back then I had an appreciation for dogs and snakes. If there were more, I can't recall. Right now my interests have expanded to include lions, wolves, horses, and snakes. Maybe foxes.
Something to note: At the age of four, I became deathly afraid of cats after a particularly irritable one at an animal hospital waiting room utterly annihilated my face (it may have been my fault, I don't quite remember). This fear remained for all of my childhood and halfway through my teens. Now I love them. There's a silly reason why, but I won't delve into that.
Speaking of growing up, I don't particularly have much to share on the matter, but I believe I was pretty sad. I tried to get along with others and tried to appease my parents, but only received rejection from both. In the case of my parents, I suppose it was because they wanted me to be more mature but it pretty much burned off at the root any relationship we could've had. Even some of my earlier teachers treated me with indifference or belittlement. By my mid-teens, I tended to be depressed more so than not.
People at my high school were generally more affable. Fellow students were friendly and teachers made distinguished attempts to connect with me. This made me glad, though I can't say I was a truly happy person before or after.
By the time I entered college, I had a few "companions" (I say this because we weren't necessarily close). I only had maybe two people I would truly call "friends". We get along very well and I was in a better mood, but happiness continued to elude me. Note that at this point in time, I had become such a withdrawn emotional wreck that I rarely allowed myself to enjoy anything.
Well, this year I met someone who caught my interest. Probably what caught my interest was that he identified himself foremost as a furry (dun dun DUN!) but he would say things and behave in ways that would leave me shaking my head with a smirk. We began talking, and soon after I found myself in possession of a new true friend. We had practically EVERYTHING in common; interests, life experiences, even body builds. But what truly grasped my mind was how forward and outgoing he was. Also, thanks to this guy, I came to terms with my identity as a furry (yay!) about a month ago. Mind you, I had been questioning for a LONG time before then.
Long story short, I am a lot more optimistic now and have a renewed hearty zest for life. I enjoy life and all it has to offer, sometimes even going out just to feel the cool breeze blowing through my hair. My friends say I'm a silly person, but I do not mind in the least. I still tend to be withdrawn when I'm in public, but it's not nearly as bad now. I am also unable to be fazed by anything now, be it graphic image or general concept that others find disgusting. If there's anything my growing up did that was good, it made me stronger.
So here's my question (FINALLY!): What is my fursona? (image of people falling over)
I am stuck between the "lunar" and "solar" opposites of my personality. In one, I am an outgoing lion that grasps the reigns of life every day and appreciates the beauty of nature. In the other, I am a solitary wolf that's not as sociable, but still remain proudly loyal to those he's close to.
Or am I something completely different? I would appreciate any and all opinions. Perhaps I'm psychoanalyzing this too much, myself. rofl

Who says you have to choose one? You could be a lion/wolf hybrid. As you said, it represents dual parts of you, so why not keep them as one entity? 3nodding

butterflybabe102 I agree =3 with Sunegami =3 I, too, possess many qualities of both a wolf and a feline (of some sort, mostly panther im guessing) I've identified myself as 80Wo;lf and 20Pa;nther because......truly i can't be JUST a wolf, because thats just not how I act. And I can't JUST be a Panther either, because I don't completely act like them either. =3 Its not a crime to be a hybrid. I feel many of us are, whether we admit it or not. I know only a very small few furs who are true breeds and their nature, personality, and perspectives reflect that. heart
That's why I'm a fox; I mostly act like a cat, but sometimes like a canine, and I love the svelte, vulpine form. Foxes act very cat-like at times, as well, so. . . there you go. X3

Its a lifestyle...not a reputation. But yes I know where you are getting at =3
Sadly, us furs are treated as stereotypes, but really, its not possible to call us that since we are so very very diverse. There are writing furs, artistic furs (includes those who make fursuits), the raver furs (As I am), the conventional furs (The very social ones who show off their fursona at cons and meet-ups), even biker furs and trucker furs, then there's the bad side of us who everyone seems that is ONLY what a fur is, the sexual furs. :/
It's really a complicated world, but me and my other fur friends have tried hard to convert people, or at least tell them what we really are.
EDIT: Well, I might have said this wrong. What I'm getting at is that most furs just...be themselves rather than doing it for any sort of profit. :/ Granted there are furs who become part of the fandom just to leech from it, but I garuantee you, any fur you talk to will say they love being a furry. And to me thats all that matters. =3 heart heart heart

I understand what you're saying. I do not actively seek the opportunities to go to conventions; as for now, I believe it's just a natural connection, for lack of better description, that I feel. It's hard to describe; you will see that I often have trouble putting my thoughts into words, heh.
I get into RPs when I have the time, and I am fond of aesthetically pleasing artwork (artistic nudity is my limit; I do not care for pieces that are explicitly pornographic in nature).
I admit I still don't know too much about the fandom since I'm still only a month in, and I've been a loner for most of my life, but hey, that's what I'm here for, the social experience. Never too late to start!
Though I do have to agree with your last statement; in the short time since I've accepted my identity as a furry, I think I've been the most (continuously) happy in my life ^_^ Though it may just be the work of my tricksy fox friend. Heh!

Good morning, all! I tend to have a hard time making forum introductions, so hopefully I'll give you all sufficient information. If not, feel free to ask me questions or chat with me! I'm more than willing to give contact information with a PM.
Anyhow, let's see... I think this will work better in a list, so here goes!
Name: Matt Age: 16 Occupation: Student Gender and Sexuality: Male and Bisexual. Relationship Status: In an open relationship.
Fursona/Alias: Leif Species: Canis Lupus (Timber Wolf) Physical Details: Leif is simply a furry extension of me, so his stats match mine, save for the fur, paws, fangs, etc. So...
Height: 5' 11.5" Weight: 160 lbs. Build: Slim, not muscular but not weak.
Fur Color: Greys and browns, nothing fancy or distinguishing in that regard. Hairstyle & Color: Brown and usually in a ponytail. Accessories and Clothing: Clothing usually matches my Gaia avatar (or at least I wish it did... I've been said I dress like an old man at times with my brown sweaters and shoes.) Glasses are always a must!
How I found the furry fandom: I had an interest in werewolves at about age 12-13... from there I found the transformation community, then the furry community. I'm still an avid fan of all such genres ^^
Interests: Furries (obviously), Transformation, Roleplay, Videogames (there's little I DON'T like), therianthropy, card-reading, computers, the list goes on and on.
So there's me in a nutshell... if you have any questions, would like to chat, RP, whatever, give me a holler! Just a note on the RP, though, I have a few guidelines I like to follow that are in my signature.
Hope to get to know all of you!
Leif/Matt
