@Voodoo - no, they were around for a long time. When they first came around they all had meanings. Best example I could think of is the Maori.
@Cale - Shqiponja is the Albanian eagle, two heads.

Ah.
And Voodoo, Tattoos are not supposed to be pointless. Its a permanent etching on your skin that, since the practice was invented, was used to display something to the world: For some their faith, for others it was a mark of pride, to some others its to remember an important milestone.
Only recently in humanity's history have tattoos become in many peoples eyes "meaningless".

No offense, but there's a lot of genius's that are atheist. And indeed, pride and faith. I never understood why the strong Muslims I know believe I'll pay for a tattoo in the after life, yet agree that God is extremely forgiving. Hm..
