Julius Devereux First YearSlytherin Family Heir Location : History - Monday @ 1:00pm
First class of the week and Julius slipped into a seat. The Slytherin didn’t particularly like history but that didn’t mean that it wasn’t important. His parents reminded him it was and he wasn’t one to question his parents. Getting his stuff out, he brought his focus to the front. He didn’t have much to say in respects to their Professor. Sitting quietly Julius listened to Professor Powell and his fellow classmates. Some gave ridiculous answers and others gave some pretty decent ones. He was particularly intrigued with Anna’s answer. She seemed to be interested in history. Though Julius supposed some people might find it an interesting subject, he himself didn’t see it. Not having anything else to add to the conversation the Slytherin first year remained silent. There was no point in speaking if he didn’t have anything of value to add.

Grayson looked up from his book as he noticed the students coming in. He didn't know how long he had been sitting reading, but the effect was always the same. Usually it would end with him being confused about what was going on, but today was different. He was supposed to be teaching the class, and as usual, it left him a bit awkward as to how to go about it. He however decided to go about doing it the simple way.
"Hello, class, and welcome to History of Magic. I am your professor, Grayson Powell. In this class, there is no wandwork, since magic doesn't help you to learn about history. Therefore, your wands will need to be put away." He stood, taking his feet from off the desk and faced the children directly. "History is a collection of events, as I'm sure you are all well aware of. However, these events help to shape the world around us. If not for the witch burnings of the sixteen hundreds, we would not have the Statue of Secrecy. If not for the crises of the last century, we would not have cooperation of all magical folk." He glanced around the class, letting his gaze fall over each of the students. "Now, can someone tell me, besides what I have stated, why history needs to be learned?"

A Monday afternoon class, Roman could definitely get used to this. He wasn't sure of this place at first (magic aside.) All boarding schools have a reputation of being weird. There's no such thing as personal space and you can't even go home to get away from people. And he definitely wasn't looking forward to attending six or seven classes every day with 'homework' assignments on top of everything. But this... This wasn't so bad. He slept in late. Gorged himself on a huge breakfast. ******** around a bit on the moving staircases and had a conversation with the Gryffindor ghost—all before attending his first and only class of the day, History of Magic. Which, ironically, sounded extremely interesting and entirely boring all at the same time. Crazy, right? So when the lecture began, Roman pressed his cheek into his hand and leaned forward against his desk trying to force himself to pay attention. ”Well.. my da' used to say, 'We learn from history that we do not learn from history.' And, I think, even though it might seem like we're doomed to make the same mistakes over and over again, our having a history, having these records of the past, it helps us make better choices so we can keep advancing and trying to get better.”

Anastasia was primped and ready for class as usually. Confidently making her way through the halls, she weaved her way through students. Some were polite, other's not so much, but she held her tongue until she reached the class. She didn't want to be late over trying to tech someone how to be a decent human being. Entering class, she was yet again not the first to arrive. Sighing lightly to herself, she scanned over the classroom looking for an optimal seat, nothing too close, but yet not too far. She had an idea that this wouldn't be one of her top classes. While she wouldn't just completely ignore it, it won't be something she slaves over to pass. History was never an exciting subject for her. Whenever her mother brought out a history book, she always groaned and pretended to fall asleep earlier.
Placing her books and some spare parchment on her desk, she kept her wand away, as per told. Professor Powell spoke casually, he seemed to be more of a relaxed type. She wouldn't be the one to test him though, she would let some other idiot do that. Crossing her legs under her desk and letting her hand fold together on the top, she kept her eyes on the professor as he lectured the class. His question was open ended and he already gave one example. He threw the question out to the class, allowing others to come up with other reasons. One students, whose robes conclude him to be a Gryffindor, let out an answer first. In Ana's mind, she felt he pretty much repeated what the professor was getting at, but put it in a definitive form.
Stacy chose to raise her hand next and give her take on it. She waited until the Gryffindor first year was finished speaking before she lifted her hand up, robe sleeves falling down to her elbow. Once acknowledged, she gave her answer. "I feel, while history gives us lessons and helps us make better choices than we previously had made, it can also just give us insight on different cultures and ways of life." Ana began, her hands moving with her words. "Focusing only on current events and data would halt any efforts of truly learning about people. You can formulate experiments and theories all you want, but to truly gain an understanding of something or someone, you need to look to the past and see the growth and development." She concluded her brief statement and returned to her previous position. She daintily fixed her hair, feeling it may have fallen out of place as she gave her answer. &&BLOOD :: Pureiiii&&HOUSE :: Hufflepuffiiii&&YEAR :: Firstiiii&&LOCATION :: History of Magiciiii &&COMPANY :: Studentsiiii&&MOOD :: Intriguediiii&&OUTFIT ::B&Y

I don't have time for dancin' That's just gonna have to wait a while Ain't got time for messin' around And it's not my style... It looked like Mondays would be a good day to review material or do independent study, because Calliandra only had one class and it wasn't until after lunch. That would give her plenty of time to pursue her own projects. Still, right now it was time for History of Magic, and she was looking forward to that. History was interesting, made up of everything she could imagine. Calliandra entered the classroom, discovering that Roman and Anastasia (she needed to right down what she had noticed bout them) had beaten her to the classroom. She found a seat away from them and read over the rules.
They seemed pretty simple. Really, the board could just say be polite and be respectful and it would cover everything, but Calliandra shrugged. She didn't worry about copying everything down, instead leaving her parchment with nothing by a label for the class and set her area the way she wanted it, with her parchment before her and her book catty-cornered to one side.
She listened to the professor, who sounded friendly and well-aware of how nice History of Magic could be. She smiled a little, and waited for Anastasia to give her answer (it sounded like the reason that Calliandra's mother would have given, what with her love of stories about other people), before she raised her own hand. "History is important because it is what shows us what will happen in the future, because we can look at the patterns of the past. For instance, the series of disagreements about blood status show us that people will work against people they consider 'outsiders,' so we can prepare for when it happens by doing things like integrating everyone now, so that they can speak and be heard when people start speaking against them again. And the predictions are much easier to understand than prophecies from Divination, so we know what we will be preparing for."
Calliandra knew it sounded close to Roman's answer, but she thought her response was more practical. People weren't going to stop doing stupid things - the whole world showed that - so she might as well prepare for the stupid beforehand. If you can't stop things, then at least you could be ready and mitigate them some. And I'm almost there I'm almost there People down here think I'm crazy But I don't care... OOC: Say anything. He knew that Byuch was following, and hoped that the other boy wouldn't cause problems in class. Only problem was, Byuch had a tendency to get pretty argumentative when it came to things that suggested he was below them. Chance was hoping that maybe spending some time with other kids their age would help, but apparently it was making Byuch surlier. Chance couldn't understand why either. It wasn't like they had personally made it a goal to make his life miserable. It almost seemed like Byuch was only in school to graduate and get out already. Sighing, he gave Anastasia a small wave and a smile before setting himself up for class. Which, considering the teacher looked friendly enough, he hoped wasn't going to be a complete disaster.
Wallis had entered and took a seat off by himself, wondering when Anandi, Vincent, or Andy was going to show up. He didn't mind his housemates. Actually, they were a lot better people he'd lived with than his older brother, but then again that might have been because Leon was the world's biggest grouch. He tapped the end of a quill he'd pulled out for note taking against an open scroll, listening to everything being said in class and wondering exactly what kind of way they wanted him to answer. It kind of sounded like a trick question in his book, after all. Why else would the professor have asked such an open-ended question? There were too many answers, and all of them correct.
Byuch entered the classroom right behind Chance, who was already making a beeline for one of the other students. Byuch didn't know her, but he followed his best friend over, figuring if nothing else, he didn't want to be stuck in a room full of wizards who were never going to take the subject the class taught seriously. He knew from experience that people never learned from mistakes, and as he sat down to listen to the various people speak, he realized it was still quite true. Sure, they could talk about it until they were blue in the face, but considering all the things that had happened in the last hundred years, he wasn't holding his breath for anything big to happen. As a result, Byuch couldn't help but snort when the three who did speak up gave basically the same answer. He wasn't doubting the professor's knowledge of history, but it was wizard history, not the history of every magical creature in the world. He could already hear Chance's groan as he opened his mouth to speak. "Too bad wizards never seem to learn from their history. You can say that the purpose of learning history is to learn from it all you want, but it doesn't do anyone any good if no one listens to what's being taught and makes the same stupid mistakes over and over. Seems kinda dumb if you ask me." ════════════════════════OOC:

Gertrude Laura Adelwood Adopted Muggleborn First Year Hufflepuff I go by Gertie... Oh and I'm 11 years old... Location: History Class - Monday @ 1:00pm Gertie had received a letter first thing that morning from her mum. Course, the young girl spent all morning writing back to her about her house placement and all the friends she’d made so far. She had so many; Stacy, Donella, Daniel, Charlie, Hikaru. She was sure there would be many more as the week went on. With her first class being history that afternoon, Gertie skipped into class. She looked around for anyone she might know. There was Anastasia she was with another Hufflepuff, Chance if she remembered right. There was also a shorter pointy eared Slytherin with them. Gertie decided why not sit with them anyways. Walking over she sat down beside the Slytherin boy. “Hello! Hope you don’t mind me joining you guys.” She said brightly. Getting her stuff out Gertie waited for Professor Powell to start class, her feet swaying back and forth as they missed the floor. Listening to Professor Powell she wondered about all of it. Though most history went over her head, she did wonder why they had all the rules they had. Listening to everyone’s answers about why history needed to be learned. However, Gertie couldn’t think of anything else. The Hufflepuff turned her attention to Byuch as he spoke about how wizards never learned from their history. “Surely not all wizards,” She thought out loud. Hopefully that wouldn’t be a bad thing. Status: Happy Wearing: Hufflepuff Uniform With: Class... Byuch, Chance, Anastasia OOC: ---No one's doubting your brains or creativity But it's your heart I'm interested in Ravenclaw's nice, but I believe you'll flourish best in Hufflepuff!

Charlie admittedly drug his feet to this class. He just wasn't one for history class. Sure he liked reading about it just classes on it bored him. He sat behind the short kid next to Gertie. When the question of why should they learn history. the short kid had pretty much Charlie's answer though a tad more pessimistic than Charlie was. "I agree with him, its suppose to be so we don't do stupid stuff again but a lot of history is on repeat, even with Muggle history, they usually have a war every so often like clockwork." Elide had found it a little bit more than difficult to find her first class, but now that she had found it she wouldn't get lost again. She had been tempted to write her mother or her sister but her better judgement had ruled against it She walked into the classroom only to hear that the conversation had already begun, well- this was going to be fun. She instantly recognized Calliandra from the table but instead of sitting near her she chose a seat a few seats behind her instead, sitting down and brushing her robes underneath her, turning her eyes to the teacher while she listened in on what the others where saying, Something about history...being important. oh! that question. Elide however kept her mouth shut, what she heard so far seemed to basically cover the question. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx⟡O O C⟡ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Anastasia could say she was happy that some of her friends had joined her during class. They all sat around her and made themselves comfortable during the introductions and listen to her and the other students give there answers on History. Chance and Gertie both seemed to be either indifferent or in accordance with most answers that were given. Although, there was the black sheep of the group that trailed behind Chance. The infamous Byuch was of course latched on the Hufflepuff's back. It took him no time at all to throw a comment out into the open. While his comment may not be completely in the wrong, I would certainly stir up something. That is most likely what his main goal is.
Ana almost wanted to slam her palm against her face when Gertie innocently spoke up in return to Byuch's words. 'Oh no, sweetie, no.' She mulled to herself as she sighed and shook her head. Looking to Chance to see if any comment would be made soon by him, she could tell he was one to just let it get out of Byuch's system. Feeling the need to not let Gertie get rampaged by him alone, she spoke up to agree with her. "Gertie has a point." She stated, looking directly at Byuch with casually neutral gaze. She could feel the back and forth already. She felt like a psychic, seeming to know that this would continue on with Byuch's aggression, Chance's passiveness, and Gertie's blind innocence. "While it can be surely said that most wizards and witches do not learn from the past, and continuously repeat the mistakes that other's have made, it can also be applied to many species. Not just wizards." She jabbed out. It was a little unlike her, but she also wanted him to see that she would fight back, not harshly, just indirectly.
"On a brighter note, there are the select few in this world who do in fact not want to redo half of history's horrible episodes. They would surprisingly like to grow from it. Who would've guessed that?" She ended with a deeply sarcastic remark. While history wasn't her most enticing subject, she does know the value that it posses. Ana realizes that those who teach history are those select few that want the world to learn from it's past and make a better one. To just instantly give up on everything and label it as hopeless is being hypocritical. If Byuch would let his bravado down just for a little bit, she would love to hear about him and his Goblin ancestry. She knows of a few facts here and there, but she certainly doesn't know of a life pertaining to a halfbreed. &&BLOOD :: Pureiiii&&HOUSE :: Hufflepuffiiii&&YEAR :: Firstiiii&&LOCATION :: History of Magiciiii &&COMPANY :: Students, Gertie, Byuch, Chanceiiii&&MOOD :: Intriguediiii&&OUTFIT ::B&Y

Andy O'Farrell
first year // ravenclaw // muggle-born // gender-fluid
____________________________________________
Andy came into class looking as though they had just woken up from a several hour long nap. Which... may or may not be true. They rubbed their eyes and let out a final yawn before combing their fingers though their short hair. Andy's gender was difficult to ascertain based on their appearance, though they had opted to wear a male set of the Ravenclaw uniform, their slacks a bit wrinkled and their tie done up as best as they knew how (they had never had to wear a tie before).
Sleepiness aside, Andy was actually very curious about this class. Having an entirely non-magical upbringing, they felt that perhaps learning history through the eyes of the magical community might help them to get a better grasp on their surroundings. All good things, considering they had felt like a fish out of water ever since they received their invitation to Hogwarts.
When several of the students started a back and forth debate, Andy just sat back in their chair uncomfortably. They were usually one to avoid conflict. Being quite empathetic, Andy couldn't stand feeling when other people were getting agitated...

Rhett Fang Ye <1st year>
☯ Rhett was not particularly thrilled about the prospect of History of Magic figuring it would be a pretty dry and boring class. It was History. No magic. No wandwork. No adventures. Well there were adventures for other people not him likely. It was learning about other people's adventures. He supposed that could be cool if the teacher wasn't old and boring.
He got to class fairly early and sat near the back not wanting to be as likely to get in trouble if he dozed off or started fidgeting. Now why was history important? He supposed there were a lot of reasons and none were really wrong so he might as well answer this one. Raising his hand he offered when called on, "Hi, I'm Rhett from Gryffindor and History gives us meaning, like an origin story or something. It gives us reference of where we are coming from."
