Yeah, taking onto Rodyn's statement, it does kind of help to know what you're looking for in the warhammer universes.
Like me? i can't stand space marines. I'm an eldar lover, just the way they play and move. But if you really know absolutely nothing about the universe at all, my suggestion is to pick up the books for the various races and look through them at your local gaming store. the players manuals often have brief histories and stories which might help you get started in knowing what mindset you'd enjoy seeing the world from.

No experience with the Warhammer except watching Johnny play 40k on his PC, so I really don't have anything to add to this. Anyway, I'm taking off so clear skies all.

Yeah, I like the Eldar as well (I have an Eldar army also) but there are almost no books that come from a non-Imperial POV, which irritates me. It's because, I believe, at least half the 40K players use Space Marines, thus Games Workshop and Black Library feel the need to make Imperium books. I think there's only one book that only has Eldar points-of-view, and it isn't in print anymore. But I think it can be found on Amazon.

Des Voh Awesome, thanks guys. But what about normal Warhammer? Dwarves an' s**t, That's harder to say, because Black Library (Warhammer Fantasy/40,000 publisher) doesn't print them often. However, I would recommend the Ambassador Chronicles (if findable) and the Sigmar Trilogy, starting with Heldenhammer.

I love dwarves, but even i'm a bit turned off by Warhammer's presentation. I think it's because they're all pessimistic assholes who make scrooge look like a philanthropist. That, and they have next to no movement and attack abilities. Just hole up and count gold.
Then again, i'm not a fan of warhammer basic anyway, so it might just be a bit jaded about the universe. 40k is much neater.

I wouldn't say that, exactly. I think it's more along the lines of that it's extended differently. More like oral lore and stories made from the game, rather than published novels, but that's just my impression.
Personally, the books and games really dont' do the tabletop justice, imho.

Des Voh Is Warhammer reg not that extended? 40K is apparently more popular, so it's expanded upon more in books than Fantasy.

Des Voh Because Space Marines give people hard-ons? I'm not entirely sure what the reason is, but I imagine it's because they're the most "balanced" army in the game. Additionally, due to their popularity, Games Workshop gives them more stuff as well, which likely contributes to the popularity.
