Star Trek Online is definitely worth-while, although being on foot needs some work. The space battles, however, are fantastic. They require quite a bit of tactical thinking (correct position in order to benefit your shields, switching shield strengths, positioning for firing arcs, sending over boarding parties, etc.).

I heard the space battles were on a 2d plane.... if true I've got a very old Star Trek game that does space combat a lot better.

I remember playing a very old Star Trek game, I think it was for DOS, where you had a coordinate grid and everything.

You had 9 photon torpedos and had to find a starbase to reload those, and it usually took 2 to blow up an enemy vessel. You warped to different areas by typing stuff like, 3, 2, 1, 1, which would warp you to 3,2 and on the corrdinate grid you'd be at 1, 1.

No, it's very much 3-D.

Here's a few screenshots of a friend and me in/near Earth Spacedock (I'm the human in the mostly-black uniform):

I checked the forum, and apparently the ships can move up and down, within a certain area. Sounds sort of like SFC 3.

Star Trek Bridge Commander has full damage modeling, 3 dimensional movement with dorsal and ventral shields and "very" restrictive firing arcs on some ships.

I prefer Bridge Commander, hence I will not be getting into Star Trek online, can't afford to with my EVE gaming.

This is how navigation in space works; there's Sector Space and System Space.

Sector Space is pretty much warp drive, where you navigate to various systems. There's a "floor" and a "ceiling" in Sector Space, but it doesn't really matter since its only use is to go to other systems.

System Space: System Space is standard ship navigation. Nothing special about it, really. This is where you find encounters and such. I have yet to find a "ceiling" or "floor" in it.
