I wouldn't say HP is bad. It's a bit formulaic and predictable, but so is Shakespeare.
It's at worst decent, at best good. But it isn't a "great" work by any stretch of the imagination. Considering the average quality of young adult and teen literature, it's something of a standout, because a lot of that genre is filled with cutters and emos. Anything is better than cutters and emos.
