Damien sat at the back of the classroom, taking notes on the lesson while thinking about his wand. He didn't really know if it was anything special; 11 1/2 inches, Laurel, which he supposed was fairly unusual, and a Griffin hair core, something that simply hadn't been done until the last few years as far as he knew. The texture was lovely, scaled on the shaft and with a faint twist on the hilt. It was a nice enough wand; it was certainly regal. His connection with it had been rather quiet, soft-spoken, he supposed. There were no fireworks or amazing sparks; simply a quiet hum and a soft glow, a light breeze surrounding him. It had been enough to convince the shop owner that it was his own wand, although Damien had honestly expected more. His father hadn't been overly enthusiastic; it wasn't a Dragon Heartstring, like his, a strong wand. But, his mother had defended him, saying that perhaps there were quiet talents to the wand that they were unaware of. Damien didn't care; it worked well enough, although he did like to blame a poor match for his shoddy charmwork now and again, but he did feel like they fit well most of the time. The owner had said that when a wand didn't work with its true match, it meant that the owner was out of sync with themselves. Whatever that meant.

Dhylan walked into the class and began taking notes right away. His cursive script filled the parchment, and the lecture was over. But... a thought was pondering his mind. He raised his hand and, when he was called upon, spoke. "Did the members of the Ollivander family have a choice in what they wanted to be when they grew up? Or were they forced to become wandmakers? What if one of them wanted to be a baker? Or an herbologist? Or a policeman?" he asked, giving the professor a puzzled expression. If they were forced to do this job, then what was the point for them? Yeah, they had to carry out the family legacy, but what if that's not what they wanted to do with their lives? He sat quietly, awaiting an answer.

Grayson Powell History of Magic Professor Former Ravenclaw
โโโโโโโโ
Now where did I put that wand?
Grayson strode into the classroom, ready to teach. So far, this class had seemed uneventful, however, he had some things in mind for today's class. He wondered about the students' resonses as he wrote the topic for the day on the chalkboard.
"Today we're going to talk about the Deathly Hallows. For those from Wizarding failies, you may have heard of them before, usually as a bedtime story. However, it would do to inform your classmates of the topic, since they may not know.
"The Deathly Hallows are three highly powerful magical objects supposedly created by Death and given to each of three brothers in the Peverell family. They consisted of the Elder Wand, an immensely powerful wand that was considered undefeatable; the Resurrection Stone, a stone which could summon the spirits of the dead, and the Cloak of Invisibility, which, as its name suggests, renders the user completely invisible. According to the story, both Antioch Peverell (owner of the Wand) and Cadmus Peverell (owner of the Stone) came to bad ends. However, Ignotus Peverell's wisdom in requesting the Cloak was rewarded. "According to legend, he who possesses these three artefacts would become the Master of Death. The story of the Deathly Hallows was originally told by Beedle the Bard and subsequently passed from family to family as a wizard fairytale. Few wizards ever realized that the Deathly Hallows were genuine items. Most people thought that there were things that Beedle had made up to entertain young wizards and witches. "No one but Harry Potter has been known to have been in command of all three at the same time, though he was never in possession of them all at once. Albus Dumbledore had possessed all three, but not all at once, similar to Harry, but he was never the true owner of the Cloak. The Cloak was handed down to Harry Potter from his father through Albus Dumbledore, and the Stone was left to him in Dumbledore's will, hidden inside a Golden Snitch. Harry Potter gained the allegiance, but not physical possession, of the Elder Wand upon overpowering Draco Malfoy at Malfoy Manor. Although Draco had mastery of the Elder wand for a time, having gained its allegiance upon disarming Dumbledore before his death, he never knew of it. Potter never made use of more than two Hallows at once because he never had more than two at once.
"Now, here's the question for each of you. I know it's tempting for anyone, but out of the three, which one Hallow would you posess, and why?"

How did we get here? When I used to know you so well?
Marina Eugenie Aldred. Proud Halfblood, Slytherin Second Year
Wearing Mood: Intrigued Thoughts: Master of Death... With: Second Years Location: History of Magic
Marina was usually bored out of her mind during History of Magic, but this lesson actually caught her interest. She listened carefully to Professor Powell's lesson, and immediately raised her hand in response to his question. "I would pick the Cloak, sir. The owner of the cloak was the only one who didn't die as a result of his chosen object. The Cloak is the smartest choice. Those who want such power like that of the Elder Wand never get what they truly seek. Just look at Voldemort. And to want to resurrect the dead.... Well, we're wizards but we're still mortal. We shouldn't be messing around with resurrection. In my opinion, at least. And I wouldn't mind being able to turn invisible." Marina knew her choice was not everyone's choice. The Elder Wand.... The idea of having power like that was very, very tempting, but she wanted to believe that if she really did have the choice, she wouldn't be consumed by the notion of such power. And the resurrection stone...They'd said Professor Owens had gone mad with grief, and that was why he strayed into dark magic. The Slytherin couldn't help but wonder, had he been trying to find a way to regain what he had lost? It was very, very, scary to picture someone like that getting their hands on the Deathly Hallows.

Damien EdgeworthSlytherin // Second Year // HoM Classroom // WearingCURRENTLY WITH // ClassmatesCURRENTLY FEELING // Tired, thoughtful.CURRENTLY THINKING // 'The Hallows... Of course, the only reasonable choice is the cloak.'โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
Damien sat up straighter when the professor began the lesson, listening intently. This was a subject in which he was very interested. He wondered if they were getting closer to discussing the Wars. If so, he wanted to pay close attention. That particular subject was one about which he was very curious. His own family, being pureblood and Slytherin, was generally believed to have sided with the Dark Lord, but of course such things were nonsense. While his distant relations on his mother's side may have been evil wizards, his own family was much more inclined to side with Harry Potter, as strange as it may sound. His father didn't believe in the oppression of lower classes, just in separation. His mother... sometimes he wondered about her. She seemed to think more poorly of the lower classes than his father. While Wesley Edgeworth was perfectly willing to associate with halfbloods or muggleborns for business purposes, Dahlia seemed offended by the fact that they were even allowed to work in higher positions, something Damien found odd. They were people, after all, and even if they weren't fit to socialize with on a personal level, he saw no reason not to allow them to work a job for which they have proven themselves to be qualified. He tilted his head, listening with interest to the lesson. When the question was posed, he nodded at Marina's answer. Of course, she was right. No one would ever benefit from any Hallow but the Cloak. The story of the Three Brothers taught as much. "I agree with Marina," he said calmly, the first time he'd spoken up in any lesson all year. "The only reason anyone would wish to possess the others are reasons that are flawed. People who want the wand only want power, but it's foolish to look to an item for such power rather than to attempt to better yourself and gain it rightfully. If you want to be strong, you must earn it. And as Marina said, we are all mortal, and that means we must die. However we came to be, whether by a divine hand or by nature itself, there is a rhyme and a reason to it, and we shouldn't tamper with things we don't understand. No one knows how the stone works, and to me, if you don't know how something works, at least fundamentally, you shouldn't use it. There is bound to be trouble, or some string attached. The young Slytherin paused. "Unlike the other Hallows, the Cloak is a passive thing, not meant to alter or change the function of things or a person. And so, I think that there is very little which can go wrong with using it. It could be used to sneak about and commit foul deeds, but we already have spells to do that, and even muggles manage it, without magic, so I don't think that it's the fault of the item if people misuse it. You could say the same for the wand, but I think the cloak is more of a tool. Wands have a mind of their own and can manipulate things themselves if they are strong enough, or the user weak enough. The cloak can't do that." He offered Marina a small smile. He wasn't sure what sort of terms they were on, after what happened last term, but he did feel bad about whatever he might have said to her in his troubled state. And he'd long since accepted her friendship with Ada, deciding that, even if she was a Slytherin, she was still a halfblood, so there was no harm in it. He still wasn't happy about Michelle and the girl, but... such things didn't seem quite so important to him now. He did still dislike the Hufflepuff, but not so much that he was worried about her tainting his cousin or anything like that. He found himself agreeing with his parents less and less as of late... particularly his mother.

Adalaide BlytheHufflepuff // Second Year // HoM Classroom // WearingCURRENTLY WITH // MarinaCURRENTLY FEELING // Interested, confusedCURRENTLY THINKING // 'Why is he smiling at Marina? Doesn't he know she's a halfblood? I thought they didn't get along...'โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
Adalaide, who had taken a seat next to Marina, as usual, listened intently to the lesson and to the responses of her fellow students, taking notes. When Damien spoke up, she wanted to groan, until she realized that he was actually agreeing with Marina. She'd been sure he would want to use the wand! Wasn't that was Slytherins were known for, wanting power? Marina was understandable, she might be a snake, but she wasn't one of the cold, bloodthirsty 'do anything to get to the top' types. But Ada had been sure that Damien was. When he offered Marina a smile, her eyes went wide. Since when did those two agree on anything, anyway? She filed the thought away to talk about with Marina later. Not that she cared if they got along, but she was insanely curious as to what was going on. She turned back to the professor. This was neither the time, nor the place. Her brow furrowed as she thought on the question. She didn't really want to speak up. She agreed with Damien and Marina, the clear choice was the Cloak. But, she was kind of ashamed of how she would use it. She always seemed to be in positions where she just wanted to disappear. Obviously, the cloak would be wonderful for that. She could wrap herself up in it, and no one would see where she was. No one would have been able to see her run out of the Defense classroom crying the day Montague laughed at her. Of course, the downside was that no one would have seen her crying, either, so she wouldn't know how many friends she really had... She tilted her head thoughtfully. It was strange, how something that you wished had never happened could actually benefit you. She took back the wish for the cloak. No matter how bad things got, she wasn't sure she'd ever really want to disappear. Knowing what had happened after last time, she wasn't sure she'd want to miss whatever might happen after. It might be bad, but it might also be good. And nothing was ever perfect. She glanced down at her parchment, still thinking.

How did we get here? When I used to know you so well?
Marina Eugenie Aldred, Proud Halfblood, Slytherin Second Year
Wearing Mood: Shocked Thoughts: Did he just agree with me? With: Ada Location: History of Magic
Marina's head snapped up as if pulled by an invisible marionette string when she heard her name. She looked over towards the speaker a bit warily, knowing it was a boy but not immediately registering who was speaking. When the redhead did realize who was talking she blinked in surprise. Damien was answering a question of his own free will? That was strange, seeing as he hadn't ever spoken up in class before. Of course Marina knew why, but still. Last year had been a completely different story. Damien had seemed rather eager to prove that not only was he intelligent, he was more intelligent than everyone else. She had been all too happy to attempt to take him down a few pegs, and had always relished any chance to show him up. But that was when they hated each other, and everything was much less complicated. But even more strange was that he was openly agreeing with her, expanding on her opinion and reaffirming it, and that he just smiled at her. What the.... Was this some weird dream? Or a hallucination? She had to be losing it. Marina bit her lip unconsciously and winced slightly at the pain. OK, well, pain was usually a sign that things were real. So she wasn't completely insane. That was a relief. Really though, what was happening? Why didn't he choose the Wand? Wasn't that he wanted? What all Slytherins wanted? Even she wanted it, just a little, deep down, and she was ashamed. Once again she had misjudged Damien Edgeworth. Was this going to become a regular thing? Marina hated being wrong, but most of all she hated being wrong about people. And to once again come to the conclusion that she had made a mistake in his character..... She felt like she could no longer trust herself on any judgements about people. That was bad. If she couldn't see the good, how could she see the evil? How was she supposed to be an Auror like that? Maybe her father had been right... No. He was wrong and he was always going to be wrong about that particular thing. She would prove it. She had to. Plus, didn't Damien hate her? Who wouldn't? He nearly died because of her! Really, she was going to have to talk about it with him sometime, though it wasn't going to fun for her. What would she say; 'So.... Do you hate me or not? I'm really confused...' Ugh. She was not looking forward to that conversation. Marina mentally shook herself and smiled back at Damien. Sort of. It was a hesitant, guarded smile, but a smile all the same. Then she looked away from him and noticed Ada looking just as surprised as she had. Oh, bugger. How was she going to explain this? Of course her friends would want to know why he was smiling and agreeing with her. It's not like the two of them were friends! She was going to have come up with something really convincing. Good thing she was a Slytherin, and that sort of thing came naturally to her.
