If there was anything, absolutely anything, that could get Soren to cast aside duties it was the sense of a storm brewing. Not an earthly one, but a deadly one, filtering in through a link in his mind. He'd already been heading toward the event he was supposed to meet his family at but now he strode with purpose, long legs devouring the ground beneath his feet until he arrived at a place filled with all sorts of horsemen gathering...things.

But that was of no concern to him. No, he was looking for furs, eyes sliding past those he had not harvested himself until they landed on a small bundle. A small bundle in the arms of another, and it took most of his willpower not to launch himself at the other stallion. Wrath was fine, Wrath was Death, and surely he would no sooner allow harm to come to one of their own foals than Soren. And the filly seemed secure enough, though if Wrath looked up at any time in the near future he was likely to find one eye on him.

He continued to scan until he came to the other furs he recognized, stalking in to shadow his priestess but staying back a few paces. Something didn't feel right, but he knew more than most what she was capable of, and he wasn't going to step in where he wasn't needed. Not unless she didn't want to bother with the nuisance on her own.

Carefully Falair began to add her mixture to the bowl she had unsealed. There was no reaction. She had at least expected a little something to happen. A small shudder or a tiny puff of stinky air as it released some sort of gas.

Alas.

So she added a little more.

Still nothing. But that was no reason to be frustrated. These things took time to really get going. And it was not like she wasn't used to work she had done failing.

So far she had been consistent with how much of her mixture she had added. But this time she doubled it. It didn't really seem to be having any negative effect on the spores, but there wasn't any change either.

Perhaps her intent wasn't strong enough.

While many practiced mantras or purposeful thinking while working. Putting one's intentions out into the universe to make things happen. Falair had never really mastered it.

Well, it was worth a try she supposed. After adding a bit more of her mixture Falair sat back, staring at the spores inside the bowl. A stern look. A focused look. Filled with intent and purpose.

She placed the palm of her hand on the edge of the bowl. Brown eyes closing as she focused the best she could. Blocking out the noise and static from the world around her.

Falair could almost feel a pulsing sensation against her hand as she opened her eyes once more. Her mixture had begun to change color, what was once a muddy brown color turned red. It was a rather vibrant red. The pulsating feel soon became a shudder as the mixture and spores began to expand and contract as if it were alive. It was comparative to a heart.

All of a sudden a small puff of pollen rises from the bowl. Before she had realized they were there, the Elder was leaning over her shoulder. They coughed a couple of times before giving an approving nod and moving on to the next.

Sealing the bowl once more she sat there and waited. Eyes still locked on the bowl and her mind chattering away in her silence about all sorts of outcomes and fun things in store.

10 - A forgotten flask of venom (extracted from a snake/spider/etc.)
2 - A jar of grounded minipet bones
11 - A discarded scrap of animal pelt with flecks of dried blood
6 - A small bag of minipet droppings
8 - A pouch of sand from the Sahara

Liang's open approval of its beetle made Qarah beam with pride. It made a little flicking motion with its fingertips to indicate that the Conquest horseman could keep the beetle if he wanted.

Then the group was moving through the tunnels, and Qarah skittered along with the rest. They were headed for the oasis and its associated burrows. Qarah hummed a note of pleasure; it did not often get to do much in the way of experiments, and getting the chance to play with ingredients was a treat. Once inside the burrow, it chose a wrap and gloves, but did not take a mask, instead wrapping one of its own shawls over its mouth and nose and fussily draping the tassels over its shoulders.

It sorted through the available materials, its eyes bright. Minipet bits would amplify the Fear in the spores when added to its own Fear, it thought, and chose ground minipet bone meal for the base essence and a little bag of droppings to help fertilize the spore. A vial of venom, to increase the toxicity (it considered whether it could get away with pocketing that afterward, to help with its beetles' resistances, and decided that if the elders were not looking it would try). A scrap of bloody animal pelt, a human-world element to help the mixture take in a biology not created by Fear, and a bag of the sand from the Sahara, a place where its clan hunted the white-coats, where it had encountered its very first humans and found them so entirely fascinating. It still sometimes thought of the Original and the Worthless One, and wondered what had happened to them. Perhaps they had been killed in the explosion. That was probable; humans were not so durable as horsemen.

Plenty of minipet bits, a few drops of venom, some of the hair from the pelt. A small sprinkle of the sand. Qarah stirred the dry mixture with a thin finger, then began to grind with its pestle, concentrating intently on the motion. Once the stuff had taken on a consistent color, a gritty, almost-dry paste, it used a scraper to add the mix to the spore.

Nothing happened. It huffed a breath, re-covered the spore, used a scrap of rag to wipe the pestle clean, and set about trying again.

This time, Qarah added more of the fertilizer than the bone and scraped some of the dried blood from the rotting leather instead of hair. It dripped another few drops of the venom into the mix to wet it and pinched a bit more sand into the pestle. When it stirred the mix together with its finger, its dry, stretched skin seemed to tingle slightly. A good sign, it thought.

The rough grate of the pestle and the rhythmic swirling motion of grinding were rather meditative, and Qarah's eyes half-closed as it focused on the purpose of its mixture. Venom, disease, toxicity; fear and Fear, pestilence, all the very hearts of Famine, and when it uncovered the spore this time it used its fingers to scoop the gritty, dark paste of its mixture into the bowl, though it was careful not to touch the spore itself. Something seemed to flow and drip from its fingertips as the paste dropped into the bowl, and the spore undulated and darkened, beginning to pulsate slightly.

When the elder came over to check on Qarah's progress, they sniffed, coughed a little, and nodded approvingly before they left again. Qarah smiled brightly under its mask, and basked in the pleasant glow of having been praised as it meticulously cleaned its equipment and its hands.

From the moment Wrath held the baby in his arms, he was lost to the rest of the world around him. Too fixated was he on trying to hold the tiny filly just so, on keeping her head nestled in the crook of his elbow, on not jostling her with any sudden movements, and with making sure absolutely nothing could disturb her. He did this all with a softened look in his normally hard eyes and a dopey smile on his usually sharp face. When Na asked if it was his, he simply waved her off with a flip of his hand, and a light shake of his head. Silly woman. Of course it wasn't his! Why would she ever suspect such a foolish thing?

He was only roused when the tension in the air seemed to thicken, and he glanced up to see that Nergui was butting heads with one of the two members of war that had summoned them there. What was the problem? Surely not the young foal? He frowned, and shifted her in his arms slightly (as they were beginning to cramp up a little), and was about to say something when, suddenly, it appeared that the momentary flare up in drama had come to an end, and everyone was being ushered out to go and get to work.

Wrath might have followed, except he really didn't want to move. Not with precious and possibly quite fragile cargo in his arms. Na moved along, and so did many of the others, and he was, seemingly, rooted to the spot.

Not that he had any problems with this at all. Even if he could swear he could feel someone watching him.

Oh, there was much the mare would have loved to have said the brute of a warrior, but chance to do so was cut short when Shaheen lay a hand on Shikoba's arm and then spoke up to continue along with the purpose of their all being there. It left Nergui with a bristling sense of irritation that persisted, even as she stepped back towards the soldier that held her filly safely in strong arms. "The nerve," she grumbled out, reaching to tuck a small curl of silver hair behind one of the baby's tiny pointed ears. "Brainless. Utterly thoughtless." Really, she shouldn't have been surprised.

Everyone was moving, heading down a hall into the deeper bowels of the famine hold, and the priestess huffed as she watched them, only just then noticing a very familiar, very small young soldier trailing the others.

"We should follow also." If for no other reason than to see this meeting through to the end. Perhaps she'd learn something more about the spores, the plan as a whole. Perhaps it would be nothing more than a chance to be with a large number of fellow clansmen. Only time would tell.

She paused though, just as she was turning to lead the way after the others, and annoyed features smoothed significantly as she tipped her head back to glance over her shoulder to the large shadow looming at the edge of the room. He hadn't been there moments before, or she'd have felt him. Will you come as well? She wanted her guardian near her.

Perhaps a little belatedly she noticed that Wrath hadn't moved, standing almost stiffly with the filly in his arms, as if afraid to jostle her. "She is not as fragile as she appears, do not worry." He could continue holding her, but she'd really prefer if he remained close enough for her to keep an eye on. Or rather, close enough for her to keep an eye on the precious bundle in his arms. A pat on his arm, and she too started down the long hall.

With the others again, she'd cast a single dark look towards Shikoba before moving deeper into the room so she could lay hands on Ollie's shoulders. "I did not know you were here."

Of course.

Wherever his family went Soren would follow, but rather than moving with Nergui it was Wrath he moved to be beside, glancing over and down at his foal.

And then, he contradicted his priestess.

"You can't be too careful," he cautioned his clansman, and there was a tiny thread of warning woven into his tone.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) for Wrath it appeared that his new shadow was semi-permanent so long as he held the small bundle in his arms.

"Shhh," he told it, glancing around to make sure no one had seen his fumble. Then he shot some more FEAR into it. About half as much. Nothing happened.

What was he doing wrong? Mmur pulled his finger out of his mixture, very nearly licking it clean before realizing that was probably a very bad idea.
