Challenge 9: You Made Me Ink

Alesaan (Sarah)
Score: 9.5
Comments: This is exactly what I was hoping to see. Like Lady Gaga,
taking outrageous ideas and making them fashionable, that's exactly
what Alesaan did. Turning this into a steampunk/rock ensemble, nothing
could make more sense. I am in love with these colours - they work well
with the model and highlight the theme perfectly.

Dante Dolly (Melissa)
Score: 8
Comments: Wow. Melissa looks stunning with this colour scheme on her.
Going avant garde was a wonderful idea with this crazy challenge and
Dante nailed it. I'm so glad the first ideas were trashed because trying to
tame this wild accessory isn't realistic. Going big and bold works. My
only critiques would be the black pieces used - around the chest and the feet.
With such an ethereal look, it can easily do without black.

AmberEmma (Wanda)
Score: 4
Comments: This is nice, but it seems a little bit simple for the challenge.
It's simple to the point where the octopus looks out of place. I also think
that the colour scheme is too light for Wanda, who has popped in
colour before through deep and rich shades.

HCTotorro (Nicki)
Score: 6.5
Comments: I really appreciate the catwalk backdrop for this as it is know
of designers to threw questionable pieces into their runway shows.
This highlights the world of fashion and that needs to be acknowledged.
The outfit isn't bad, but I'm not sure green was a good choice for Nicki.
Red would have done very well over the green, which kinda washes her out.

elphiethesane (Helen)
Score: 7
Comments: Really loving the colour scheme on Helen. The darkness
brings out her ivory skin and bright eyes. The details seem a little bit
muddled from afar, but when I zoom in to 200%, it's quite clear. Mad props
to the colour balance and texture. The headpiece really stands out in the
best possible way.

milk cap (Sheenah)
Score: 5
Comments: This is quite cute, although it also looks chunky. Think sweater,
wide dress and thick boots make Sheenah look about 300lbs. I do like
the quaintness of the image though - like I said, it's cute.

Alesaan (Sarah)
Score: 7.5
Comments: Alesaan's got the idea here, and it shows. Sarah looks dramatic and stylish, and like she's about to dazzle the crowd. The colors work spectacularly here, and the octopus is perfectly situated atop her lace veil. The only nitpicks I really have here is that the outfit itself is kind of plain, and relies heavily on the background to make it feel complete.

Dante Dolly (Melissa)
Score: 8.5
Comments: Here's Melissa, looking like she's about to strut down the catwalk, or along the red carpet... except that no one knows who she is, because they can't see her face. The creature on her head is swallowing her alive! It's almost comical how half her poor face is sticking out from underneath the headpiece. I can barely see Melissa and the outfit looks bulky and overwhelming as a result. I can just hear all the STUFF on this avatar clanking and clattering as she tries to move. That all being said - the avant-garde feeling comes across strong, and you have a clever, color-balanced whole that's appealing to the eye, no matter what issues I have with it.

AmberEmma (Wanda)
Score: 4
Comments: After that fantastic last round... you barely even showed up to this one, AmberEmma! How many items have you got on Wanda? Five, not including the mandatory octopus? The simplicity of the look is fine - it's fashionable and elegant, and this would normally earn you points... in a challenge that isn't about blending a particular item in with your outfit. This feels lazy. It feels like you looked up a particular color scheme and threw on a few items and called it a day. I don't see an ocean theme, I see a girl in a white dress with a squid on her head. Your mechanical skill is lacking here, and I'm disappointed.

HCTotorro (Nicki)
Score: 7
Comments: Okay, this one's got me - it toes the line of gimmicky with the arm mod, but ends right at clever and a bit tongue-in-cheek, and I like that. It shows personality, and illuminates your struggles - this challenge is hard, and you've had enough of it! The green works in tandem with the orange as well, and makes it seem like Nicki's rebelling against her designer. I like the workaround comedy in this one, in a theme where you weren't directly allowed it.

elphiethesane (Helen)
Score: 9
Comments: pros: this essentially is a better and more concise version of dante's entry. the color matching on this dress to give her the illusion of standing in shallow water is KILLING me. elphie's been coming out with hit after hit since changing to helen and i am WITH IT. it's sleek, dark, works well with helen, gives me a clear, solid theme, and most importantly doesn't obstruct half her face.
cons: the only thing it doesn't conceal is her face. the octopus doesn't strictly match, but it works

milk cap (Sheenah)
Score: 6.5
Comments: I like that milk is being true to themselves and finally just going for a cute look with Sheenah. Her orange hair and dramatic lipstick contrast enough to make me give it a second or even a third look. The outfit itself is solid - I almost feel like Sheenah is about to go on an autumn date and is trying to be cute for her partner. It's endearing, even though it's not what we'd usually expect to see on someone so punk. The only problem I really have with this is that the octopus sort of feels like an afterthought, in a theme where you're meant to blend the offending item in.

It definitely seems like the blue octopus is easier to color match...

I'm having a hard time deciding between elphie and Dante to win. Dante's displayed the better mechanical skill, but elphie's got the better outfit, in my opinion.

          Alesaan (Sarah)
          Score 7.5
Comments Honestly I love the color combination in this piece, the blue and black are great together and I really love the purple in the background. The Lady Gaga inspiration was great, and it's just really solid. It completes the challenge. But I'm not sure it wows me either. Also the eye patch glitch isn't my favourite thing.

          Dante Dolly (Melissa)
          Score 8.5
Comments I have a couple mixed feelings on this. I love that she went bold and avant garde, was the best decision for the challenge, and the colors look amazing on Melissa. The balance is lovely, though the outfit does over power her a little bit. I'm not crazy about the black on the avatar, though I see why Dante used it to tie into the black with on the legs. But...I dunno, it might be a bit too busy?

          AmberEmma (Wanda)
          Score 4
Comments Wanda is pretty cute - but you know how cute goes. What's more, there are...four items aside from octopus, and it's just...just so so simple. And I don't get where the octopus connects, and it doesn't really match any of the colors.

          HCTotorro (Nicki)
          Score 6
Comments I really don't know how I feel about this one. It's a pretty apathetic feeling. I don't think I really like the white around her core, it reminds me of a diaper. I really do like the way she used the octopus though and combined colors with it, though I do think the green might not be the best color for her? It isn't awful, but I kind of would have liked to see the blue or red.

          elphiethesane (Helen)
          Score 9
Comments This is a more ocean-y avant garde look, and it connects well with the octopus, which I think is an improvement on Dante's look. But. It might be a little bit dark, and feels kind of heavy in comparison, even though I do think it works out better and I can see it doesn't have as much on it? I feel like she's a bit hidden, though she isn't as hidden as Melissa.

          milk cap (Sheenah)
          Score 6.5
Comments I am so happy milk did a look she wanted to do, and didn't drop out. I like that she used the red octopus, and it pairs well with the dusky color. I think Sheenah looks adorable and like a casual punk day, wearing an octopus as a hat is pretty punk. But I'm not sure the octopus makes sense, and it should.

Dante leads the pack with a mere 2 points from elphie, who is a mere 2 points from Alesaan. I think either of those 3 could be considered the winner. Alesaan's look was by top pick, but Dante's was a close second for me.

Amber kinda phoned this one in. Maybe it's because she has immunity. That being said, milk would be the next to go ...

The top three are all so strong, I would be happy to see any of them win. Based purely on the numbers I support giving it to Dante. And I hate to send milk home, especially when I think Amber’s looks was significantly weaker. :/ and I think if we do send milk home and keep Amber based on her immunity, it should be stressed that was the only thing that kept her in, and remind everyone not to coast through challenges just because they think they’re safe.
PostPosted: Sat May 26, 2018 7:33 am

I don't feel like milk should be eliminated, what with such a lackluster design from AmberEmma, but rules are rules, and I'll respect AmberEmma's immunity. By this point in the game however, I think we should eliminate it as a concept - not during this round, I don't think a sudden rule change would go well, but for the top 5 to be sudden death would sit well with me. I do support making it very clearly known that AmberEmma only got out by the skin of her teeth.

Like I said, I like elphie's design better, but Dante displayed the better mechanical skill. If you feel Dante should win, I'm fine with that.

I don't like it either, but like you said, rules are rules. However, this rule does not get extended into the final 5 and it is completely eliminated for next cycle. Next cycle, we have the model pool as an incentive to do well, so we don't need immunity for the winners.

Challenge 10: Wiggin' Out

HCTotorro (Nicki)
Score: 7
Comments: Totorro speaks very passionately about her design and it
comes through beautifully. The long ivory of the hair matches
Nicki's complexion perfectly, and I appreciate the decision to keep with
the ivory/off-black theme. Overall, the image is great, though the black
on black is a little difficult to see.

Dante Dolly (Melissa)
Score: 5
Comments: Lots of detail went into this design to work with Melissa's
features - most notably her face. I was hoping to see Melissa in pure white,
to wash her out, but I can hardly blame Dante for not doing what I would
have done. The black and white looks just fine on Melissa. My biggest
issue with this outfit is whether the wig and horn pairing were appropriate.
Either the wig needed to stand out more or she needed horns that
wouldn't cover the majority of the centerpiece. Bravo on colour
matching though, despite having an issue with it.

AmberEmma (Wanda)
Score: 6
Comments: I LOVE the top half of this design, but I'm not gaga over the skirt.
The hair looks gorgeous on Wanda, but with it being so big, it would
have been nice to have a slimmer looking bottom. Some skin tight black
pants would have been a more fashionable choice.

Alesaan (Sarah)
Score: 7.5
Comments: The dress looks fantastic and that leg mod is so sexy
and fashionable and feminine and cute!! The bare feet is refreshing
and provocative, which I adore. The only thing that would make this look
better is a different hair. The outfit is so elegant, I want to see
more elegant/less disney hair on Sarah.

elphiethesane (Helen)
Score: 5.5
Comments: At first look, I got a 'Cruella de Ville' vibe, which piqued
my interest. Although it wasn't exactly what elphie was going for, I find that
it still kinda fits. However, I must admit that I'm a little torn. I wonder if
black hair might suit the outfit better, but then we wouldn't have the
dark brow/light hair look, which is a popular look, especially for the time.
However, the dress matched with the background props looks so well
put together, it steals my attention away from the hair, whether for good or bad.

HCTotorro (Nicki)
Score: 5.5
Comments: pros: the outfit itself is tight and stylish, and flows with itself, at least as far as i can see

cons: what is the theme of this? if nicki is supposed to be a rpg protagonist she sure doesn't look like one. background's too dark and blends in with the offblack parts of the outfit. would have liked to see a dark headband to break up the white expanse of the hair

Dante Dolly (Melissa)
Score: 4
Comments: pros: creative concept, clear theme, i do like the choice of hair on melissa and despite it covering half her face it suits her

cons: kind of cluttered and hard to distinguish from itself. looks like a lumpy mess

AmberEmma (Wanda)
Score: 7
Comments: pros: in a weird way i've grown to like this. forest witch comes across well here

cons: Covering Half The Face Is A Bad Look. what is all that stuff you added in the background? it just makes wanda look lumpy

Alesaan (Sarah)
Score: 6
Comments: pros: the description illuminated a lot for me re: design choices and i did like the personality it gave sarah. the hair suits the theme you were going with well and i like that you didn't go overboard on hair accessories though i would have liked to see a shiny tiara to go with all the other sparkly stuff. the color balance is good and the more i looked at it the more i grew to like it

cons: i'm highkey upset because you posting your other submissions just makes this look way worse. almost any of the other outfits you came up with would be stronger than the one you put in and pointing out your own flaws just makes it easier for me to pick them out too. taking critique to heart is important but knowing when to apply that critique is equally as important if not moreso. some critique is contextual and shouldn't all be lumped on at once to make a milquetoast product that just looks weird and stilted. you are a fantastic designer and you have not let me down this whole competition and right now was a VERY BAD place for you to start. also you put blush on her and makeup's not allowed lol

elphiethesane (Helen)
Score: 8
Comments: pros: ok so this one got me, i LOVE monster ladies and taking that risk and making helen look almost completely different to suit your vision is really something special. the description did highlight a few things for me and i love the personal passion/inspiration you had in the panther lady. solid all around

cons: helen... sis... your brows... they are just so comical on helen's features that it makes the whole thing look goofy. brow basics would have been just fine, you didn't need to use the bold brow! an elegant lady, even if she's mid-werewolf transformation, should at least think about getting her eyebrows threaded. are contestants even allowed to use brow basics??? could have used a more prominent tail but i like big fluffy tails on my wolf ladies so that's just me

I really don't like most pure b+w avatars, so this round is going to make me saltier than usual.

I'm a big fan of monster girls, so elphie's got my vote.

          HCTotorro (Nicki)
          Score 4.5
Comments I don't get what in the world this has to do with a con or a cosplay honestly? I think I would have liked this entirely without a background, just a white one anyway. I think it would have made the general avatar stand out quite a bit better. The lacy in the back is a little off set from the white circle in the back as well, comes off as weird. I don't hate this, I mean, it's a fine look. I just think the description hurt it a bit, and I think Nicki could have looked better.

          Dante Dolly (Melissa)
          Score 6.5
Comments I think these brows might bother me more than Elphie's brows, but they are far from the worst thing. I like this look though, I like the mix of white and black and that it's balanced off center. I like those things. The soft and nearly scared look on Melissa is kind of nice. I do think the wigs and roses cover up the wig quite a bit which a problem when this is technically a wig challenge. But honestly I liked this look quite a bit, it didn't blend into the background awkwardly like HCTotorro's look.

          AmberEmma (Wanda)
          Score 5
Comments I like the forest goddess style, but I don't like the raven/bird. I get what she was going for, but it was far too intense of a black compared to the rest of the look and the other colors in it. I do wish the bottom was narrower since the hair was so big, and I wish the hair wasn't blocked by the bird. The bird was a great idea just doesn't do anything positive for the look. And the gold belt is just a little bit off, it is a pop of color that doesn't really suit things.

          Alesaan (Sarah)
          Score 7.5
Comments I'm in love with the leg mod, do you guys know what it is? I also love the lacy white dress and layering it over black, I think it is a very fitting way to use both colors for this challenge. Sarah looks gorgeous, but I do not like that she threw make up on and even drew emphasis to it in her description when she knows it shouldn't be done. I also agree that while I love seeing her other designs, I would rather see them posted in the contestant's thread after the challenge or something because when she links them like this, all I do is compare her actual submission to what could have been, and generally I prefer one of the could have beens. I almost wish her dress, or at least some of the skirt, had been just white so that the hair didn't blend into the skirt.

          elphiethesane (Helen)
          Score 6
Comments I love her thought process, her inspiration, the idea of the look so dang much. I love the dress and the chair. I think the wig is good on Helen. The eyebrows are distracting. My eye keeps going to them. There's also quite a bit of color variation going on between the whites and the blacks, not necessarily in a way that clashes? But I'm very aware of it. I also think the wig gets lost, it isn't the focal point of the look at all. Which again, on a challenge called wiggin' out, that's kind of a problem. I think if Helen had looked a little more like herself and little less like the bad a** monster babe here then the hair would read more as a wig and would stand out more.

The Clot Thickens

Geez. It wasn't until I read your feedback that I realized
the make-up on Alesaan's submission. Good catch.

As for Elphie's submission, I don't like that a brow mod was used, but I
did make it clear to change the hair and didn't make it clear that
eyebrows weren't considered in that, so we can't rightfully dock marks
for it.

bad wolf bae

I'll add up the numbers when we get our final set, but until then,
I'm curious as to where you both stand on the bodies of work that we've seen.

Dante Dolly kinda missed it this round, but has an impressive body of
work that includes 3 winning designs.

HCTotorro has never made a top design, but has consistently shown
us creative looks that have been mostly good.

Alesaan, elphiethesane & AmberEmma have all each won top design once.
Alesaan and Elphie's looks have gotten better over the cycle to the
point where they are pretty consistent with good outfits. Amber had a
hiccup last week, but I'm sure she phoned it in because of her immunity -
she started at the top of the pack and has done consistent all cycle.

Depending on the end scores, I don't think I could eliminate Dante for one
bad week. I'd feel differently if it were any other designer - but 3/9
challenges says a lot. Dante has won a third of them!

We were all ready to eliminate AmberEmma for her poor last round regardless of how well she was doing. Her body of work may be good, but her misstep would have cost her her spot and let milk cap through had she not had immunity. As good a designer as Dante is, I don't think their previous wins should save them from criticism or even elimination. Their avatar this round just isn't great, and the only other people I'd see fit to eliminate here are HCTotorro because their avatar just doesn't feel complete to me, or Alesaan, because I just don't like their submission this time around. But, like I said, this color scheme makes me salty, so I could just be blowing smoke. I can't really find anything good to say about any of them.
PostPosted: Tue Jun 05, 2018 8:27 pm

The Clot Thickens

Last round was a ******** of issues for me because I
would have voted Amber out had she not had immunity. Judging by
their bodies of work, I felt Amber's skills were on par with Milk's skills.
Milk showed so much growth that she became a real competitor and
Amber has just kinda coasted. That's why last elimination was hard for me.
I thought Milk deserved the fifth spot.

Dante's body of work, though not untouchable, is largely successful. Not
every challenge was a homerun, but there have been very few blunders.
My choices to go home would be Elphie or Amber.

Alesaan's is actually my favourite as it plays to my tastes, however, I will
agree that the extra submissions need to stop. You are completely right
when you say it's easier to pick out flaws in the design when you see
better options elsewhere.

I am also disappointed that we didn't see any white/black out outfits.
The example that you made was gorgeous and I would have liked to
see model Melissa or model Wanda washed out in white. Oh well ...
