Jersey was invented in the Channel Islands, but were avaliable in Europe as yearly as the Medieval Era. It really became popular in 1916 thanks to Coco Chanel who start use it in their products.

Lace

Composition:
Uses: Bridal gowns, shawls, dresses, garment accentuations, accessory accentuations, upholstery accentuations, curtains, tablecloths, lampshades, lingerie, scarves
Pre-Wash: Depends on the weave.
Needle: 75/11 for heavy, 70/10 HM or HJ.
Thread: Cotton or polyster.

History of the Fabric:
The history of lace is unknown, but the earliest examples started in Ancient Egypt as burial garb. Other early lace examples started in Medieval period, but It wasn't until the 1300s in a law restricting lace import. True lace as we see it today started in the 15th century with two places being noted for it's lace in Flemish and Italian painted works.

Leather/Pleather


Composition:
Uses: Jackets, shoes, gloves, hats, pants, belts, watch bands, cases, handbags, upholstery, sports items, firearm holsters, luggage
Pre-Wash: NO!
Needle: Leather needles
Special Notes:
History of the Fabric:
Leather is one of the oldest known fabrics in the world, while pleather is a much more recent invention. Leather has estimated origins of 400,000 BCE, but it wasn't until 400 BCE that tanning leather happened in ancient Egypt.

Pleather was invented in the 19th century in Germany, but it was refined into what we know it as in the 1920s.

Linen


Composition: Flaxseed or Cotton
Uses: Bed sheets, pillowcases, blankets, dish towels, bath towels, wallpaper, upholstery, skirts, shirts, suits, dresses, luggage, thread, aprons, bags, napkins, tablecloths, diapers
Pre-Wash: Yes
Pros: Breathable, Washable
Cons: $$, wrinkles easily, poor drape
Needle: 70/10 H or 80/12 H
Thread: Cotton and Polyster
Special Notes: Common in historical wear.
History of the Fabric:
Linen is the oldest record fabric (Fur is assumed) and there is evidence of Linen like fabric all the way back to the ice age. The origin dates back to Bablayon and was orginally made of Flax. Because of it's history is traced so far back, it's also historically the most commonly used throughout history. The term Fine Linen comes from the use of the best linen when guest come to visit.

Uses: Underwear, socks, bras, sports bras, bike shorts, yoga pants, hiking apparel, motion capture suits
Pre-Wash: Yes
Needle: 70/10 SUK ballpoint, 75/11 HS.

History of the Fabric:
Another name for Lycra is Spandex. Lycra is mostly for athletic wear and dance outfits. The material was developed in the post-WWII era.

Muslin

Composition:
Uses: Mostly as a fabric used for pattern making and mock ups
Pre-Wash: Noo!

Special Notes:
History of the Fabric:
Archeological evidence startedin the 9th century in India, but the first discription of Muslin was in 1298 by Marco Polo. It has been also a really popular fabric throughtout history and has been found throughout Europe and Asia. In the 1600s Muslin started to appear in Europe.

Neoprene

Composition:
Uses: Wetsuits, scuba gear, swimsuits, electronics cases, sportswear, sports bras, gaskets, industrial equipment
Pre-Wash:

History of the Fabric:
Neoprene was invented by DuPoint scientist on April 17, 1930. The idea was to develop a material similar to rubber. It started to be critically used during WWII.

Nylon

Uses: Tights, stockings, sportswear, yoga pants, and other form-fitting types of apparel

Nylon was developed as an alternative to silk in 1938. The invention became a key part during WWII when Nylon was used to make Parachute Cord.

Organdy

Uses: Evening wear, dresses, baby clothing, children’s clothing, collars, cuffs, aprons, apparel lining, curtains

The origins of Organdy start in midieval Switerland. It was believed that the use of the fabric was more localized to France and Switerland and those of the rich until the 1600s when English and Dutch trading made the fabric more wide spread. The popularity caused the fabric to become popular as a first communion dress material and it reached it's peak in the 1950s and 1960s.

Organza

No one is 100% sure about the origin of organza. It's clear that it comes from somewhere along the silk road, but some believe that it's based in the Turkestan region. This is based on the origin of the word Organza and that there is a town named "Urgang" in the region. The word is also not of Chinese origin. In addition during Medieval Europe, some regions called it urgang.

Poplin

The term Poplin comes from the French Papelino. A fabric that was made in 15th century Avignon, France for the Pope's residence. Productoin of similar products would later happen in Flanders, Belgium. In the 1920s the UK introduce the fabric to the US under the name of "Broadcloth" and has since been a label to discribe any poly/cotton blend. Poplin became popular during WWII as uniforms for the British and US armys.
