Marem Everett-Maris

Status: Not Magical.
Location: Prison.

A young man entered the room with a weak smile. He was only a little older than fourteen, but he shared the features of the rest of the Everett household. Strong eyes, platinum hair, striking good looks, but unlike the rest he didn't really enter with confidence. He avoided eye contact, took half a minute to re-install the lost door knob, and walked over to grab a plate and began leaning over the table amidst the telekinetic banquet to load his plate with food enough for two grown men.

"Hey Nyale, Auntie, Dad." Marem spoke with little enthusiasm, but there was no surprise as things continued to hover around him. Marks and scuffs and grease stains noted his appearance, he looked over at his replacements, and frowned. He took a moment to whip a razor sharp dagger-like glare at his father. "So fast, huh? Rae loses his sorcery and he gets to be discarded to Galbadia and you bring in his replacement in what, a week?" The boy huffed before his father stood up, stuffing his face with a piece of meat.

"Marem!" Salem started, before his son continued. "I guess it's a blessing I started out without sorcery, I at least get to stay in the family." "Raeka left for Galbadia of his own accord, I merely all-" "He was just shot Dad, I saw him there! You would have never let him go if he still had his sorcery, you'd have forced him to come home and dote on him to make sure all was well before you'd let him go anywhere."

The table shook for a moment. "MAREM. ENOUGH. We will not have this argument at the table, in front of guests." "Well, when the ******** will we! You've barely said a word to me since you dragged me home after the Concert!" "Language, son, if you must maintain impudence you can at least keep decorum. I'm working-" Salem stopped, holding a hand up to his forehead. He took a heavy breath. "I'm working to keep us all safe, I don't know where Marianna is, I have people searching for her, for your moth-" Marem stood up like his father "I SHOULD BE WITH THEM."

Marem shut up as he was forced back into the chair, the wooden legs splinting somewhat under the force. Salem grimaced, "Your siblings are both SeeD, I... I can let them wander on a leash... But I..." The well dressed man straightened up, "My apologies, everyone. I've lost my appetite. Marem, I'll be in my study if you want to speak after eating. It seems... we have a lot to say." And with that, the father departed.

The boy shrunk after his uncharacteristic outburst towards his father, looking down and keeping from making eye contact as he picked at his food. "And now I ruined dinner, great."

Dinner grew harder and harder for Rem. Soon, she was struggling to levitate a spoon all the way to her mouth without losing its contents. Every psychic movement dug a little deeper into her brain. At least she wasn’t the only one to struggle; she caught sight of Nyale launching a chunk of meat across the table onto Etamara’s shoulder. When the Everett matriarch spoke up, Rem had clenched one eye shut and her tongue protruded from the corner of her mouth as she tried to levitate a forkful of pasta to her mouth. Her concentration lapsed as she snapped to attention, and the fork dropped back down onto her plate with a clang.

”I’d like that, ma’am,” Rem ventured, bobbing her head to Lisanna in respect. The look of delight in Ny’s eyes helped to soothe the ache. ”Your daughter has been kind to me.”

That was when the door came open again. Rem’s mouth snapped shut. She had the good grace not to look like she was staring, even as she watched the young man enter. The youngest of the Everett-Maris clan, if she remembered right. And the exception to the rule.

’Replacement.’

Rem watched, and she listened, and she thought. Every word, every expression, she studied every detail in both Salem and Marem. Didn’t even pretend to eat; she couldn’t manage the concentration once Salem raised his voice. Back and forth, she watched, each exchange growing louder and louder until Everett put his son in his place. Rem watched him go, too, her expression unreadable.

’And now I ruined dinner, great.’

”Thank you,” Rem said to Marem. ”Now dinner doesn’t feel like a test.”

The boy looked up at Marem from his plate, not enough to make eye contact, but enough to nominally tell he was looking at her. "Y'know, it's how you know he cares. It's what Marianna says, 'everything is a test with him, it's suffocating'." The youngest Everett spoke between mouthfuls of food and chasing it down with water, despite everything he was almost already halfway done with his plate. It seemed he was in that prime age of growth for a young boy, where eating three times the amount of a adult was just a light snack, and the rebellion was kicking in.

His head tilted as his father's personal assistant came in, plucked a few more items before departing with his father's plate. Another replacement, but this time for his mother, except this one was paid for and subservient, lacking any of the bite his actual birth mother had. He hated being back home now. His mom had been so much more honest, even if she was emotionally closed and stand off-ish. Mother had always been more genuine than Father.

"I wanted him to care once, to have dinner feel like a test. But I think I dodged a bullet on that one, huh?" He looked in the direction of Nyale, Etamara and then Remington again, still avoiding eye contact. "Rem, right? I'm Marem, the one without any gifts. Footnote of the Everett household. Sorry you have to take my brother's place, seems like he's already over bearing on you, and it's just the start of it." He leaned back over the table, reaching for seconds or thirds of anything.

Marem may not have looked straight at Rem, but she kept her eye on him. Eating took a break while she waited for the piercing ache in her skull to subside.

”Remington Estellise la Faustina Nipal, Substitute Sorceress and General Inconvenience for the Everett-Maris family,” Rem introduced herself, bobbing her head toward Marem in respectful greeting. ”Pleased to meet you, Marem. What else can I look forward to while I’m under your father’s wing?”

Etamara Vilisantra
Status: Annoyed
Song of the moment: Clockworks

┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━═✥═━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓

As dinner began, Etamara was practically the only one of the girls eating casually. There was no struggle or difficulty in what she did with her telekinesis, eating, drinking, and wiping her lips of any food residue with her napkin every so often. When the chunk of meat came flying at her, Etamara was not paying attention, nor could she sense such a thing coming at her, giving this audible wet smack against her cheek. She paused with her eating, her clothes and cheek splattered in the juices of the meat. She gave a slight glare at Nyale, but she didn't say anything. Instead she wiped her cheek gently, patting it so that her makeup didn't smear across her face. "You're so very lucky that it was an accident!" She thought internally to herself in burning anger. No one messes with her image!

That mishap aside, what really soured the mood was the arrival of Marem, who all but bellowed out his frustrations at his father, attacking and antagonizing Salem. When Salem finally had enough and stormed off, Etamara's eyes narrowed at Marem, her ire now focused on him. What an arrogant boy. How would he understand the struggles we sorcerers face." Was all she could think about when he began to have a conversation with Rem, who had been struggling up till now to even eat. Etamara looked over to Lisanna, who happened to be in the room still, and she had yet to reply or respond to her in regards to going to the garden.

"I'd enjoy making use of the garden, Headmaster Lisanna." She said simply, keeping her tongue to herself in regards to the fight that had just occurred, but she certainly was not in agreement with Marem's attitude towards Salem; but she also was biased.

Lisanna greeted her young nephew with a warm smile and a nod when he entered, while Ny gave a friendly wave to Marem.

        "Hello, my dear"

Yet it seemed the pleasant mood of the dinner didnt last much longer as the boy immediately began an argument with his father. Upon hearing that Rae had gone to Galbadia alarm bells went off in Nyale's head and she shot a worried look at Salem, wondering why he would be okay with Raeka going to work for the people who had almost killed him. Now doesn't seem like a good time to ask though... She thought, anxiously watching the heated exchange escalate.

"SALEM" Lisanna cut in sharply, rising to her feet as Marem was pushed back onto the chair. That was too far for her liking, despite the boy's provocations.

After Salem had excused himself and left the room, Lis let out a sigh and rubbed her temples.

"Marem. Everett. Maris. That was badly handled" She said in a calm but stern tone, fixing her gaze on her nephew. "It is entirely unacceptable to speak to your father in such a disrespectful way. You're old enough to know better. Make sure you go and apologise to him after dinner, please" The boy would hear the disappointment in his aunt's voice. She wasn't his mother, but in the absence of Aeliana she had always tried to be there for her nieces and nephews as a maternal figure, showing them love and support but also at times, shutting down improper behaviour. As her brother did with Ny. Then her expression softened, and she placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. "I know you are worried about your siblings...but there are better ways to deal with that than lashing out. You are not a footnote in this family either, my love. Your father is just under a lot of pressure and he is doing his best, considering the circumstances..."

Lisanna's chair moved itself back as she stepped away from the table. She smiled warmly at Eta and Rem for their replies to her.

"Wonderful. I will take my leave but Etamara, Remington, please do finish your meals and I wish you a good night's rest. Nyale, we'll speak soon...behave yourself" The woman moved to the doorway, heels clicking on the hardwood floor. She would check in on Salem before heading back to the Garden.

As soon as Lis had disappeared from sight Ny downed her glass of wine. "Good thing that wasn't awkward" The Sorceress said, deadpan, hiccuping as she looked directly at Rem, Eta and Marem. If the girls had ever wondered whether their family was as dysfunctional as any other, now they knew for sure.

Badly handled. Marem repeated in his head, flinching slightly as Lisanna berated him. Unlike Salem, Lisanna had been like a second mother to the boy ever since Maris was gone. While father could be ignore like the a** he was, Lisanna was a influence that was harder to shrug off. His eyes looked side to side as he looked for a good out in his mind and ultimately he couldn't find one in time. "Yes ma'am." Not that it would be that bad, most likely, he was sure auntie Lis was about to go have words with him. Wouldn't be the first or last time.

He bit his tongue as she went on, knowing she was just trying to assuage his feelings. But he knew better. It was hard not to be a foot note in a family where everyone is a sorceress with world changing powers. He knew he was just 'Marem'. 'Oh from the sorcerer family?' 'He's not a sorcerer.' 'Oh, just a guy.' 'Disappointing.' "Goodnight, auntie."

The boy raised his head when Nyale spoke up. He scoffed and let on a smile that didn't reach his eyes, before looking back at Rem. "That. Just be glad Marianna isn't here, she has the ability to fight him. It can get really gnarly if she wants to make it so." He knew Salem wouldn't ever strike his daughter with sorcery, but Marianna had a temper and rarely had the same restraint. Luckily it had only happened once.

Bourbon was following his meal. He'd undone the top buttons of his shirt, head hanging back over his chair as he just breathed. Eyes closed he did his best to simply focus, re-temper himself and find some way to close the rift with his own children. Everyone and everything else could roll off his shoulders, like a good fighter he could keep his guard up and have the blows fail to find a mark. But when it came to his own kids, it cut like a knife. He'd tried to give them everything in the world.

Most of them literally got one of the rarest abilities that could exist, otherwise a great education, discipline, a nuclear family, private tutors, scholarships to any school they wanted. They could not want for more, and even then he tried to make sure he did not absolutely spoil them; no that was Nyale and Layel's favor. They weren't his kids so the consequences of that was something he didn't have to worry about.

The patriarch raised his hands, downing another shot before having the glass be filled up again with a wave of his hands. No magic this time, just power and money, a petty use that he tried to never indulge in. "All in the power in the world, and I can't even manage happy kids."

Rem watched and she listened. In moments, their elders were gone. The look on Marem’s face was familiar.

Sou-hi.

”Is everything here about strength?” she asked, soft as if she were treating in a graveyard. To be shut out of your own family just because you couldn’t do the same things as them…

She couldn’t even look at her food anymore. Besides her piercing headache, it felt cruel to continue practicing right in front of Marem.

”What about you, Marem? What are you pursuing?” she asked, focusing on the boy instead. Maybe if someone showed an interest in him, he’d feel better. ”Nyale told me you’re studying engineering. Weaponcraft?”

Something you say or something you do // A taste of the Divine

There was a light rap on the office door that Salem would recognise as his sister before she entered.

"Well, power doesn't solve everything, unfortunately" Lis remarked, in response to his comment. "But if you figure that out do let me know..." Moving further into the room she stopped and assessed the state of her brother, her gaze landing on the shot glass.

"Would you leave us, please?" She politely requested of his assistant, whom he was evidently in the process of promoting to chief bartender. "Mr Everett seems to have forgotten that his hands do, in fact, still work" After this brief attempt at levity her expression turned to one of gentle concern.

"I'm not here to berate you, I'm sure you regret how far that went. I just want to make sure you're alright" Lisanna's pale blue eyes searched his teal ones, her tone questioning. As headmaster she spent all day everyday looking after people in some capacity, Salem was no different. If anything she thought he needed it more, given his propensity to make it look like he had everything under control at all times, and the walls he put up against most people.

"Allow me to ease your woes slightly by saying this: he's at that age...it will get better. I'm sure you remember the yelling matches I had with Nyale when she was fourteen. Funny how they know all the ways to push your buttons. Little monsters" She gave a rueful smile, and then shrugged.

"In any case, I can tell you that wealth, power, and privileges won't make Marem, or any of these kids, happy" The woman walked over to the window and stood there, gazing out at the night thoughtfully. Meeting their physical and material needs, however excellently Salem did it, wasn't enough. "He just needs you to be his father, to be there for him and talk to him" Simple as it sounded, he seemed to struggle with that for his own children, from her observations. She knew Marem felt like the back sheep of the family, having no powers, and Lis could understand that. She'd tried to show him that he was just as valued as his siblings and cousins but it was his father and mother he really needed that affirmation from.

Lisanna turned around to face Salem again, leaning against the windowsill. The moonlight illuminated her from behind, giving her a silvery glow. "Anyway, before I head off back to the Garden, tell me brother...how are you holding up? And do me the honour of not prevaricating" She smiled at him. His Sorceress sister had become older, more emotionally resilient, and more powerful over the years, but made sure to retain her sense of humanity. Yet while her words and smile were meant to be comforting, there was a tiny flicker of worry in her eyes, knowing that the near future for their family was on uncertain ground.

The man seemed to straighten up a smidge when the door rapped. Watching his sister summarily dismiss his assistant, he nodded in affirmation and the woman left without a word. She was good, expensive, but so far she had never given a complaint and had maintained all of her duties with excellence.

His eyes met hers when she spoke of how he treated Marem. He regretted it, but it was something he would never be proud of. Salem smiled faintly when she mentioned the shouting matches she had had with Nyale. That was true, and he had been through the same with Marianna and Raeka. The former the most, but every now and again the other boy would get in the mood to argue. "Monsters." He repeated, chasing the thought with another drink.

"He doesn't want me to be his father, and ever since Etamara's parents signed custody over to me, he's been more and more hostile. He only wants to see his mother, but..." She may be dead. He did not know how to handle that, for himself or his children. Raeka seemed to take it in stride, but Marem wasn't. He was still pissed that Salem had forced the boy to return home instead of to Esthar Garden after the mess that happened.

As he spoke his magic began to pour more of the bourbon, and unlike his previous bartender, he wasn't with holding on the amount, filling the glass almost to the brim. He started to reach for it, before hesitating, and turning a cold gaze to his sister. She could see the emotion behind his eyes was gone, but they seemed clear; as if he wasn't hurting at all. "No. More and more I struggle with narcissism. I feel closer akin to my matron than my children, and they seem to just not matter. Not like I do."

"I worry I may have to divest my holdings to you and the kids before too long, and go to rest in Esthar. I plan to stop Adel before that happens, but... I don't know if this will end before the way is lost."

Lisanna watched Salem with a careful gaze, taking note of the change in his demeanour and face. He was cold and detached, and his words were deeply concerning. It hurt to hear them, and to see him behave that way. But she had asked for the truth, so she was grateful he had been honest.

"Mm...I see" The woman replied quietly.

To know that her brother was losing himself to this extent, that he felt more like Edea...it was worrying. Not that they hadn't discussed it before, but it was worse than she hoped. Seeing your family slowly degrade until they became someone else entirely, like a death sentence for the person they were, and knowing she could do nothing to prevent it...it was a hard thing to bear. "All the power in the world, and it's still not enough for me to save you" She echoed his sentiments from earlier. "It's a cruel joke" Lis closed her eyes and sighed, taking a moment to compose herself and knowing that she could not allow her own emotions to overcome her. When she was younger, they certainly would have. When she looked at Salem again her expression was one of resignation.

"I...I agree, you must go to Esthar before you become too far gone, if it comes to that...regardless of the situation with Adel. I cannot fight both you and her" She said softly. Though her words were pragmatic, he would hear the pain in her voice. "The kids too" The thought of him going to Esthar was bad enough on its own, let alone if he lost control of himself before that. "I could face Adel without hesitation, but you..." She shook her head, unable to finish the sentence. Salem was the first real family she had ever known. It would destroy her to have to try and put him down, as it also would the rest of their clan. Perhaps even now he didn't care about the emotional impact on them, but from a practical standpoint it was a gamble whether his family would find the resolve to do such a thing.

A clock in the office began to chime the hour, catching her attention. "I have to go, I'm sorry..." Lisanna said regretfully, walking over to where Salem sat. "If you must arrange your affairs, keep me updated" She paused before leaning forward to give him a delicate kiss on the forehead. Whether he would care about any of what she said, she truly didn't know. Once upon a time he had moved heaven and earth for her. Perhaps that part had faded already.

"Take care, brother. Always here if you need me"
