NAME: Lisa. (Or, on Gaia, Mirenithil, my account name. I have never used a magical name.) AGE: 32 LOCATION: O'ahu, Hawai'i - aloha!
ABOUT ME: I am primarily in pursuit of Ultimate Reality/Truth. A lot of my practice is based on what is most easily explained in the allegory of the blind men and the elephant. The following poem adapts the ancient story from India. John Godfrey Saxe It was six men of Indostan, to learning much inclined, who went to see the elephant (Though all of them were blind), that each by observation, might satisfy his mind. The first approached the elephant, and, happening to fall, against his broad and sturdy side, at once began to bawl: "God bless me! but the elephant, is nothing but a wall!" The second feeling of the tusk, cried: "Ho! what have we here, so very round and smooth and sharp? To me tis mighty clear, this wonder of an elephant, is very like a spear!" The third approached the animal, and, happening to take, the squirming trunk within his hands, "I see," quoth he, the elephant is very like a snake!" The fourth reached out his eager hand, and felt about the knee: "What most this wondrous beast is like, is mighty plain," quoth he; "Tis clear enough the elephant is very like a tree." The fifth, who chanced to touch the ear, Said; "E'en the blindest man can tell what this resembles most; Deny the fact who can, This marvel of an elephant, is very like a fan!" The sixth no sooner had begun, about the beast to grope, than, seizing on the swinging tail, that fell within his scope, "I see," quothe he, "the elephant is very like a rope!" And so these men of Indostan, disputed loud and long, each in his own opinion, exceeding stiff and strong, Though each was partly in the right, and all were in the wrong! So, oft in theologic wars, the disputants, I ween, tread on in utter ignorance, of what each other mean, and prate about the elephant, not one of them has seen! John Godfrey Saxe (1816 - 1887)
I believe that every religion and tradition out there has experienced a smaller or larger piece of the elephant at some point, as obscured as that may have become in layers of dogma and ritual law or what have you.
There are many out there who stridently assert that one -cannot- borrow/use any elements of other spiritual traditions other than one's own, most especially if that spiritual tradition belongs to a different ethnic group than one's own ancestors belonged to.
According to people who believe this way, every element of every spiritual tradition is inseperable from its context, and therefore one should choose one specific spiritual path and stick with it exclusively. I half agree and half disagree with this approach, because while I agree there are many things that -do- require cultural immersion and a long-term experience in a specific spiritual tradition to fully grasp, there are other things that are emphatically not. I find this view excessively black/white, excessively either/or.
Personally, I prefer to encounter as many different parts of the elephant as possible to get as broad a view as possible of it.
It makes the fact that I have integrated practices from varying Native American tribes into my own ways exceedingly politically incorrect, but the fact is that I don't give a damn if I am tarred with that brush. Those tribes' ways of percieving the elephant resonate for me and are the most effective and easiest ways for me, so they are what I do. I do not claim to be Native American and never have, and these practices mingle well with the Pagan and Buddhist practices that form the rest of my path.
PETS: None currently because I'm in an apartment that doesn't allow pets, but I've had cats before and I fully intend to get two again the moment I'm in a place where I -can- have pets. Cats are wonderful companion creatures for the magically inclined, because being more sensitive than (most) humans, they can pick up on bad juju and junk in the air before humans can. They're a feline early warning system!
HOBBIES/INTERESTS:
- Studying varous subjects that interest me. These come and go; at the moment, I've been reading a lot of books on chess, of all things.
- Collecting various types of children's toys; the specific toy brands have changed somewhat over the years. Currently, sock monkeys, Calico Critters/Sylvanian Families, vintage stuffed animals with 'rubber'/vinyl faces from the 50s and 60s; some Barbie, some Bratz, some Cabbage Patch Kids, some My Little Pony. I also have a decent collection of video games and systems from the past twenty years.
CURRENT PATH: There isn't a name for it, but it is an earth-centric politically incorrect amalgamation of Paganism, certain Native American practices from varying tribes, and Buddhism, all in the name of communion with Ultimate Reality.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN STUDYING/INTERESTED:
I first discovered "Wicca" in 1994 at age 18; it was the first time I'd ever heard of it. I put "Wicca" in quotes because, of course, it wasn't real Wicca - but I didn't know. During the mid to late 90s, nearly anything you could learn about Wicca was books in ordinary bookstores (especially early on,) and at that time -that- meant books published by Llwellyn, a publishing house it took me maybe four or even more entire years to learn to avoid. They routinely published pretty much anything by anyone regardless of whether the author had any solid experience or had done any real reasearch. (Most of said authors, in the mid 90s at least, even all cited each other in a circular fashion as the source of their research. Perhaps Llewellyn has since gotten its act together and now publishes only reputable materials, but I'm wary of giving them any more of my money to find out...)
The first books on "Wicca" I had were volumes 1 and 2 of "Faerie Wicca" by Stepanich. I don't think I even heard the name Gerald Gardner for a year after that. The early internet wasn't much better, because nearly every single Wiccan homepage (think Angelfire and Geocities) all repeated information found in Llwellyn books, and they were invariably accompanied by the banner "Never Again The Burning Times." We were all solidly convinced we were practicing a secret ancient religion stretching back thousands of years. ... Oy.
I got much wiser in the intervening years. Once I discovered what real Gardnerian Wicca is, I realized it was not for me, and have called myself generic Pagan ever since. I have yet to encounter an inclusive spiritual trad, but I would very much like to find one.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE: I think this post is already frighteningly long enough. XD
