Why I dress (like a flamboyant spontaneous thrift-store whore?), I just look at a peice of clothing, think of what idea it reflects, and buy it. If I'm terribly happy, why should I be confined to just a dull shirt and jeans when I can wear rainbow tights and a jester hat? If I feel hopeless or meloncholy why should I stick to the same old thing when I can deck myself out in black or victorian-style. When I feel confined by female gender expectations I dress like a man and when I'm feeling attatched to earth I don a long skirt and leave my shoes at home. When I feel giddy sometimes I dress like a child, and when I feel sexy I might dress a little risque. I'm not trying to make a statement, it's all very subtle and unconcious most of the time.
Fashion is just a reflection of who you are or how you want to appear. But if so many people are going to judge you by your appearance, why would you want to appear like everyone else? Simple unobtrusive clothing is like a defense mechagnism, its like camoflauge. If someone asked my why I dress the way I do, I might just ask them, "Why do you dress like so many others? Are you ashamed of what you really feel, or do you just lack free thought?"
