I blame laziness, but if you really look at what they're doing, it takes a lot longer to figure out how to spell something in '1337' than when you already know how to spell it the correct way.

I'd also have to say, after reading a few other threads, it's the fault to modern America in general. People are trying to change the way we spell permanently. From what I hear, Webster even tried to screw us over by putting his own words into his dictionary.

So you see? It's peer vandilation? If no one thought it's "cool", then no one would do it, right?

People who read too much science fiction need to calm down. Yes, I mean you and your rant, Lola_siannodel. How can intellectuals decline in status while criminals take over? Sure there is a "scientific community" that few people outside of it care much about, but Nature has balance, and I'm sure everything will be fine.

I blamed TV for being too entertaining, taking time in which to read. And agreed with almost everyone.

We should do something about our laziness! Nevermind, I am too lazy. Just let the Asians take our place as technological leaders. Do something. I don't know. I also learned to type literately online by example. So, thank you, DarkElf27, for inviting me to this guild. smile

What has prompted the loss of literacy in modern America? Is it the mass media, laziness, ineptitude, stupidity? Are generation after generation of people indeed becoming stupider than their ancestors through the passing on of defective genes? Is television to blame for luring children to its blue glare and away from books? Will the average American even be able to read above a sixth grade level in 30 years?

Thoughts, opinions?

See the word 'stupider'. Funny...

My Two Cents: I think it's more the parents’ fault than the children (as are so many things). I loved watching TV and playing video games when I was younger (I spent as much time in front of the TV as I did in the back yard). I just always had books around me. Everyone in my house read and my parents bought me books all the time. I thought everyone read as much as I did (until I got to school).

Parents just have to instill the habit of reading books in their children opposed to letting them constantly watch TV and play games (in order to learn). These days, kids don't read. My god-sister hates it. Says it’s ‘boring’… Especially with these video books they have. Parents just plop their kid in front of the TV, pop the DVD in and go about their business. Of course reading is going to look boring compared to interactive shows like Dora and whatever else is on. 3nodding

It's sad, but this is our youth. Poor children... domokun

It seems to me that job requirements are already quite stiff. Even a carpentry place takes those with a college degree over those with only a high school diploma. What the hell for? Why does one need a college degree to learn how to work with wood and tools?!

I myself tend to blame peer validation. Parents set their young child in front of a computer. The young child inevitably meets up with other young children, or older teenagers online. Thanks to the shitty public school systems, many kids can't spell worth s**t nowadays. Therefore these younger children are exposed to the stupidity and illiteracy of the older ones.

Or you might have a teen who's a very accurate speller but who wants to fit in when he chats online or on message boards, so he purposely uses "txt tlk" when he chats. I was guilty of this myself. I felt like everyone else was doing it, so why shouldn't I do it to fit in? I only stopped when I realized that I was making an a** of myself.

Well, that's my take on it.

I agree, but to a point. Carpentry is math - that's why you need a college degree (you need a degree for everything now). Not to mention carpenters make serious money if you know what they're doing. I actually think it's better to require a college education for all jobs. If anything, it lets you realize the potential your job has.

As for the computer bit? Everyone does need to become computer literate and the best time to start is when you're younger, but the chat rooms do mess kids up. They think that this txt talk is the way you should type and that it's 'normal' (I personally don't see the draw to them, but whatever). And sometimes they do just want to fit in. It's sad...

Point taken, but I'd add that Word documents auto-edit your text to make it correct, so that builds BAD habits, whereas forums don't, so you have to type and punctuate it out yourself, which builds GOOD habits.

I don't know... confused If you type something incorrectly and you are unsure how to spell it, Word notifies you and fixes the problem. Word shows what you did wrong, what the correct spelling/grammar/punctuation is and then lets you fix it. I think that's good.

Or am I missing something?

I don't blame laziness.
If people were too lazy to type out a single word, they wouldn't try to learn how to type quickly in their 'language'.

That's true... Nice point. 3nodding

Correct word usage is really being lost, especially at the high school level. My kid brought home her english research paper with her teacher's comments. Not one comment dealt with correct word usage, such as 'sole' or 'soul' or 'their' or 'there.' I couldn't believe her english teacher would have missed this blatant misuse of homonyms. I went back through the paper, made corrections and comments, and my kid got an 'A,' being rather impressed that the ole lady actually knew something about writing.

My best friend, a much older lady, is really dismayed at the loss of language, especially among her ethnic group. She really becomes upset when she hears black people talking 'ignorant,' as she says, holding themselves back because they refuse to learn to speak and write correctly in order to get ahead in life. To put her comments into perspective, her son is an admissions director at Yale University, so she has earned the right to talk to her ethic group and peers about their lack of adequate language skills.

Oh, dear. What can I say that has not already been said in one form or another? I shall try to put in my own two cents.

I believe that the decline of literacy in this nation is due to the fact that no one cares. Nobody cares if you can type or speak intelligently, only if you have a "hot bod" and a "sweet ride". No one cares if you have a great proficiency in language, or that you can spell extremely well, because for the most part these skills rarely apply themselves to society. When a child (I will use myself as an example) shows a propensity towards higher learning at the tender age of six, don't you think someone might raise their heads and say, "Oh ho! Look here, everyone! I think we've found the next child genius!" Don't you think that the path towards that child's goal of perhaps ridding the world of AIDS would be unhindered thenceforth? No, no. This is not so. To be so intelligent that it puts to shame the teachers in whom the child's trust has been issued is a crushing blow. You see, in this Modern American society, to be intelligent is considered stupid, moronic, idiotic, and all those other wonderful adjectives. Therefore the "smart people" as all of the real-life, bonafide stupid people like to call us, are segregated into certain classes, and even then, they segregate themselves even further by retreating into a wonderful world like Gaia.

The mere fact that children have little to no desire to read comes from everything being digital. Television and video games are mostly to blame for this little qualm. When children are taught that thinking is bad, what do they do? They go for the most brainless thing they can think of. Then after a while, they learn to function for their entire lives without actually having to think. It's really a brilliant system for those who will one day rule this country. There will be a select elite that will have the brainpower to control out nation, and the rest will be a slobbering horde of idiots.

Personally, I believe that everyone has the potential to be intelligent. I think that given the right mixture of encouragement, dedication, and understanding, the children of today can reconstruct our world for a much brighter future. It's only a matter of self-esteem. Children have little self-esteem in the area of intelligence. They feel as though any accomplishments they make in school go unnoticed at best. Therefore, with anything they do in life, they feel an immense sense of loss, not only of self, but of that connection to others that makes us feel like humans.

Idiocy is an epidemic.

Not at all. I judge by behavior, not age. Ageism goes against my beliefs.

Then you are a very smart person!

I believe that it is sheer laziness that makes people type so badly... That and peer copycatting to seem 'cool'. People that copy others are rather stupid in my opinion. Everyone should be unique... Not copying everyone else!

I blame lack of literacy on the parents. If the parents don't introduce reading at a young age. their children won't want to and they'll initiallly receieve some difficulty reading.
