His basket opened during the migrations to these odd new lands. He grew walking, and never knew any other life. What happened to his parents, he knows not, but he suspects that they settled at one of the way points on the path, leaving him in the care of the great herd. It didn't bother him at first. After all, all the adults in the herd more or less helped take care of all the foals, and all the foals in turn were playmates with each other. All they did when they weren't taking a rest was walk, and when they took a rest, they were all together. So he always had all the love and attention he could want.
Then... the minis settled down. And spread out. Now days were not spent walking, and his former friends and playmates were all off to find their own homes. But he had no clue where to go, what to do, or who with. Who was he, if he was not walking?
As such, he gets easily awed and starstruck by those who know who they are and what they are doing. He tries hard to make others like him, trying to shape himself to what they would want him to be, because all he knows about his own personality is what he hates. He hates being alone.
