I could have gone on and on about the pros and cons of each series. but, that's not what people want to hear. they want something short and concise. And a great way to do that, is to group rider series together based on how they feel.
If he wanted to template all riders together, I would have suggested Ichigo, Black, and Agito. Ichigo being the base for everything, Black being a good solid example for everything, and Agito as, I think, the best example of form changing with story and cohesiveness. (I noticed that in Kuuga that the only real separations in story were based on when he got a new form or not) More recent series are also easier to find though, and Double makes for a good way to handle that. Not perfect, but good, and easy to find.
It's really all about preference and when people want to start, there's so many choices that it's hard to get a good feel for the series.
