“Sunflowers?” James had said, looking at her. When she didn’t appear to be joking, he repeated again, even more incredulously, “… Sunflowers?”
“Yes, James, sunflowers,” she had said, sounding very amused. “Come on, Sunny, they suit you. They even go with your name.”
“SUNDerland. Sund, not sun,” James grumbled, but he already knew he’d lost, and also that he didn’t really mind having lost. “Sunny is a girl’s name.”
Mary had slipped her arms back around him while he grumped, and proceeded to give him a squeeze, still wearing that amused expression. “And you’re a big strong man, I get it. Fine, we don’t have to plant sunflowers. But I would like plain old flowers. Please?”
There were times when she was better at the quivering bottom lip than he was. So he rolled his eyes up and let out a big, long sigh.
“You already know I’m gonna say yes.”
