It was always like that, every year. The first years to the nearby wizarding school went over the lake in boats, one night, every year. And, just like that, it was over with. They were gone and going to learn how to cast spells and do other wizard-like things that she would never know about. All she could do was guess what their lives were like based on the remnants that they left behind, to fall to the depths of the lake. Sometimes it was coins, other times it was other unique small things. One time, she found an orb at the bottom of the lake, although she did not know the name of it or its purpose. All she knew was that it was beautiful, a wizard item, and changed colors from white to red. It fascinated her.

She swam down to the depths of the lake where she had hidden the orb of wonderment. It was in a small crevice in the side of a rock at the floor of the lake. It shimmered slightly under the thin layer of sand that she placed on it to hide its whereabouts, "Hello," she smiled, pulling it from the hole. It glowed white and lit the area around her, making her face an eerie color. Maybe she could find a wizard or witch at the surface who could explain the importance of this object.

Gripping the orb to her chest, Nerissa swam to the surface of the lake. When her head breached the choppy surface, she glanced around for anyone at the shore. A huge gust of wind sent shivers down Nerissa's spine and she chattered her teeth against her will. She glanced up at the sky, and watched the clouds roll past. The weather was not welcoming to witches or wizards. They tended to come to the shores of the lake when the weather was nicer and warmer. Nerissa pouted, but still scanned the shore in hope of a visitor.

Cian had decided to take a walk by the lake that day. He had a coat zipped up tightly to his neck and a green scarf wrapped even tighter around his throat. He reached the lake shore and sat down on a big boulder, looking out on the still water. He was suddenly surprised to see a girl poking her head out of the water. He didn't think it was a mermaid, merpeople around here were far less beautiful than this girl. He sat up quickly.
"Are you all right?"

It had been a while, but finally someone came to the shores of the lake. She had to have been there for at least thirty minutes... maybe an hour, before someone actually showed up. She moved closer to the edge of the lake, brushing some of her hair from her face. Since she had first come to the surface, the weather had been chilly, with a breeze that shook her right to the core. Now, there were rainclouds above them, and they began to sprinkle. They hit the water like a mist, making Nerissa seem more ethereal. She was like a ghost in the water as she swam closer. From afar, she seemed normal. Like a woman who had decided to step into the water for fun.

When the man noticed her, she stopped moving towards him. It was always at this moment where she would hesitate. Where the mistrust between her kind and his would flare up and the voice in the back of her head would plant the seed of doubt. There was no way for her to even communicate with him, unless he came into the water. She was not proud of it, but she had to be deceitful with him. She needed to trick him to get into the water. Nerissa had no intentions of harming him, she simply wanted to know what the orb she was holding was.

The mist around her from the sprinkle and the splash grew stronger as the rain began to pour. It soaked her hair and face, and it was probably going to soak him too. She released a breath, and a cloud of fog, as she made her decision. Nerissa swam closer, despite the voice nagging her in her mind. She knew she wanted this. But she had no idea how she would attain it. It was simply a whim at this point, with no plan, just emotions. Despite this, Nerissa would still try. When she was close enough to the man, she smiled.

Trying to play coy, she teased her hair with one of her hands, trying to pull the shy card. When he asked if she was alright, she shook her head and pouted. No, no she was not alright. There was something she needed from this man, and it was information. She held the orb tightly in her other hand, holding it close to her chest. It glowed faintly, adding to the ethereal look that she had.

Cian felt the rain coming down hard, a million drops of glass melting to his skin and clothes. His dark hair was already soaked, making his bright eyes stick out like he was in shock. Lightning danced in the sky, illuminating the man's eyes for a moment at a time. He watched the girl swim towards him, leaving swirls of icy water in her wake, and he realized she was obviously a Mermaid. He looked at her curiously and saw the orb pressed to her breast. It would occasionally fill with a gaseous scarlet, and then disappear to leave empty crystal.
" Is that a Remembrall?" He stepped a little closer to the edge of the water., his feet crunching on gravel and sand.

Nerissa heard him say the word and her heart skipped a beat. This man knew what the object was. He said it so casually, and she knew that it was a wizard trinket. Nerissa attempted to say the word in her mind, to hear it replaying over and over there, and she was giddy with excitement, despite the rain pouring over them. She beamed, holding out the object to the man. He had an accent to the way he spoke than other wizards, but she didn't mind. It reminded her of the way that her people spoke. Very song-like.

When he approached, the voice in the back of her head grew louder. What if he grabbed her? What if he yanked her onto the ground where he stood and dragged her away from the lake to die? Her heart raced at the thought, but she simply swallowed the emotions down and smiled at the man again. She wanted to know more about this object. Nerissa held it out to him, but not too close for him to grab it. He had to come closer to the water for that.

In fact, Nerissa wanted him to submerge in the water, if she could help it. Then he could really understand her. Above the water, it was not a beautiful voice that escaped Nerissa's lips, but a horrible screeching noise that was more like a hawk than a mermaid. Despite this obstacle, Nerissa had a feeling that this man would be easy to lure. He was curious. He was trusting. She would not misuse that trust, but she would exploit it.

Her smile was warm and she slowly floated away from the man, just slightly, to encourage him to reach for the orb... he called a... Remembrall.

Cian reached for the Remembrall with a cautious hand. He hesitated, not sure if he should trust the Merperson. His arm shook from both cold and faltering. He grasped the cold, wet orb in his palm, looking it over. He started to speak, slowly.
" This is a Remembrall. It helps people remember things," he said, trying to sate her curiosity. He dimly recalled Merpeople's inability to speak above water. He thought for a minute. Cian sank to the ground and sat close to the water, shivering. The cold racked his bones, and he wished his clothes weren't waterlogged. His bright jade-colored eyes looked over at the girl, and he could dimly see a shining tail beneath the inky water of the lake. He clutched his wand in one hand, willing nothing to go wrong.

When the wizard took the orb - the Remembrall - he explained its purpose. A device to help people remember things? She giggled. Why would anyone forget things? It seemed like such a silly notion. Mermaids thought about things and got them done, always remembered things. Witches and wizards must have a different mind frame, she concluded. Nerissa smiled and nodded her head in excitement.

But the smile that was there quickly faded. He was reaching for his wand. That object with which many of her people were warned about. That so many other creatures were warned about. The wizardkind and their wands. Limitless power, in the hands of beings who could use it for good or for evil. Anything they so wished. This terrified Nerissa.

The little voice in the back of her mind was suddenly screaming for her to run. That she wasn't safe. That, now the wizard had what he wanted, he would simply kill her. She gasped, and turned tail and swam. Nerissa hid near the bottom of the lake, as close to the shore as she dared, watching this wizard. How would he respond?

The waters where calm where a young male sat on a huge rock under the shores of the black lake singing to himself. Not many people could hear his since he was underwater but if anyone could they could never leave the area without stopping and listen to him. He laughed in a few versing of his song just because it felt great to be out and ecstatic. Sadly his singing also would pull the opposite effect. Ashki -the singing man- always have a time where he gets completely bored with what he does and never knew how to stop it. What should I be doing today? Should I swim the lake yet again? No... there is nothing ever happening when i do... Why am I the only one around...? He though to himself still singing but also wondering if he was really the only one of his kind out there. He never met another of his kind before even though he was a traveler there was never a time he could remember seeing another one around. His song grew louder when he kept thinking.

he drew back in near-shock when she recoiled away from him. Of course! It had been his wand! He held it out horizontally and set it down on the rock away from him. He backed away from it a few feet, scarping against the wet rock. He tried to find her. "I swear I won't hurt you. I'm about afraid of you as you are of me." He shuffled away from the wand some more, dangerously close to the deep water. In a second he had slipped, and was sent down the few feet to the water. The water was more cold than he could imagine, and his coat and scarf were putting extra weight on his body. He finally pulled off the jacket and the scarf, and rose to the surface, throwing them back on the shore. "I...s-still have your...Remembrall, if..you still..w-want it," he chattered. He held the orb out to the water below him for her to take.

Nerissa watched this man as he slipped into the water. She gasped and attempted to help him, but noticed that he had already found his footing, and had removed a layer of his clothes. He was wandless, putting it to the side to show that he was harmless. He just stood there, talking to her with chattering teeth. He must be freezing at this point. She slowly approached him, surfacing just as slowly. Slow enough to say under the water, "You are strange," her voice was song-like before she reached the surface. When she reached the surface, she was careful not to talk, so that she wouldn't screech.

When she surfaced, she let her hair fall over half of her face. The water fell over her ears, shoulders, and then down her arms and back into the lake. It felt great to Nerissa. There was nothing like a light rain to make it difficult to tell the difference between surface and lake. There was a difference, obviously, but this made Nerissa feel like those were near non-existence.

She reached for the Remembrall, but placed her hands on the man's instead. His hand was like ice and she grimaced. He would get sick being so cold. Lucky for both of them, the rain ceased. The wind was still coming strong, however, but it was not as cold as it had been before. She tried to warm his hand and arm, and she looked into his eyes to see what he would say or do.

Cian smiled a little when she called him strange. "You are to me too," he said. He was getting extremely cold. Icy green water tapped him from all sides, pumping shivers through his spine. When the Merperson came in to hold his arm, he was grateful, but it didn't help much. He would soon get Hypothermia if he stayed here any longer. He smiled and looked down at her hand, water glittering over it. "Thank you, I have to go now though. I'll be back soon." He pulled himself onto the shore, and grabbed his outer clothes, holding them at his side. Cian slowly picked up his wand, holding it out so that the dangerous side was towards, him, and put it in his pocket. He didn't want her to be frightened. As he started to walk away, he turned around again. "I'll bring you some Wizarding thing next time I come here. You seem to be interested in them." With that, he smiled and walked back towards Zonko's. He needed a warm bath and maybe a drink at Three Broomsticks.

When he pulled away from her, Nerissa frowned slightly. She couldn't help it. She was always very lonely, despite their being a few other merpeople to talk to. She hardly saw any of them, so it made it difficult for Nerissa to want to go out of her way to find them. She had been here for a while, already. Many years, in fact. Nerissa was aging and she could do nothing about it. All she had to show for those years was a bunch of junk and treasures, all mixed into one. She had never left the Lake before and she wasn't sure she wanted to either. It was dangerous out there, so she was left to be alone here, in the Lake, for the rest of her life.

The man left, saying a few words about coming back to visit with more things. That cheered her up, but it all seemed so abrupt and rushed. Maybe he was afraid of her? Or maybe he didn't like her? Nerissa became sad at that, waving good bye very forlornly. He probably didn't even notice her waving goodbye, he was so in a rush to leave. Then again, she remembered suddenly, it was freezing out and he probably needed to go inside to be warm. That's what she heard and understood from the students, anyway. Always talking about how warm inside was, what ever that was. She wanted to go inside too...

She sunk into the water, just letting herself float down, down, down into the darkness. The water was warmer here, in the in between. It was closer to the bottom that was chillier, so she decided to find a nice little crevice to hide in and sleep for the night. Right at this temperature and level, not too high and not too low. She glanced around and found a small hole that she could fit into. Swimming over and wriggling in, she laid down in this hole and yawned. It had been a long, uneventful, scary, exciting, and interesting day, and Nerissa closed her eyes and dreamed about more of the wizard world.

Caitlin walked near the Lake. Remy had really done it this time. She hugged Sam, didn't even talk to her about it. How the hell was that fair? She paced the shore, she had gone to far. Caitlin didn't even feel like having a party, that was how upset she was, even if Sam was up there. She pulled her hair out of the ponytail and chewed her lip.
