Rick hadn't even realized where he'd run, only that he needed to get away from the man claiming to be his uncle. It wasn't until he heard water that he realized he was out by the lake shore. He sat down on the ground hard, curling in on himself. His thoughts flashed back to the conversation he just had. He had been under the impression that he had no family on that side. That his mother's family had disappeared. Now, it seemed that wasn't the case. Why approach now? It wasn't like the man even cared. If he had, he'd have made more of an effort.
Heck, did his father know? Rick thought about it. It was plausible. It also made him wonder at his father's distance all these years. Garret, at least to Rick, was unapproachable. He was different with Jacob. He buried his face in his knees. It made a sick sort of sense, actually. The way everyone seemed to treat him, no one actually had wanted him. His father must have thought he didn't want to deal with him, and then was forced to take care of him when his mother died.
He gulped in a lung full of air. It was wrong. Kat had said that his father shouldn't have treated him that way, and suddenly he could see how she was right. Everything he had endured from his father, from the fact he ignored his existence to the fact that his father only acknowledged him when he needed something, it made sense now. He tried to ignore the tight feeling that had replaced the empty feeling in his chest. Not only that, the rest of his family, the ones on his mother's side, had done the same. Only acknowledged him when they had to. Only obligation had caused them to acknowledge his existence.
Sadly, life at school wasn't much better. He was ignored, and so far, the only people that even spoke to him were Lore, Professor Fino, and now Drae. He was just as unwanted here as he was at home. Curling into himself, he sobbed, ignoring anything around him.

Rick looked up over his arms. There seemed to be a girl standing there with a concerned expression on her face. He blinked, his chest still heaving from his fit. He'd thought he'd be alone. Obviously that plan fell through. He swallowed, trying to control his emotions. "I-I'm fine. Yeah, I am. Sorry if I bothered you." He hunched his shoulders against a sudden chill that belied the warm weather. Settling his chin on his arms, he stared across the lake, trying to think of anything but what he'd discovered that day.

Lorelai had run down to the lake, the most excited she had been in a long time. She had just gotten a letter from her eldest brother, the one she actually liked. She hadn't opened it yet, she didn't know what would be inside and she didn't want to risk crying at the Gryffindor table.
Dear Lore,
I'm in Rwanda right now. I don't know if you know where that is, it's a small country nestled in Africa. The people here are nicer than anyone I've ever met, and I told my guide about you and what's going on with Mom right now. He gave me a necklace to give to you, I don't think it's Rwandan but thought that counts right? Anyway, I really miss you. I heard about Mum, and I'm so sorry. I hope to visit you guys before she passes, and I just want you to know I'm here for you. I'm sure Dad has a job, so I hope youll be fine. If anything happens, contact me as soon as possible, okay?
I miss you and I want you to know we love you. Mum and you are really close, but she'll be somewhere better.

Lore was right. She started crying. Daemon didn't know the half of things at home. Dad had no job. Things weren't going to be okay. She cried for a few minutes as she walked, but then saw Rick, maybe a hundred feet away. Drying her eyes, she put on the necklace Daemon gave her and approached Rick.
Things would work out. Things would work out.
She was an expert liar, especially to herself.
When she finally reached him, she saw he was crying and was with Caitlin. She knelt, her voice as even and smooth as opaque glass.
"Rick, are you okay, what happened?" She nodded at Caitlin, silently thanking her, but also telling her she could handle it.
