Rick nodded quietly, his gaze still blank. He glanced over when he heard another set of footsteps, and frowned when he saw Lore. He shook his head at her question, not sure what to say. Heck, could he even admit it out loud? It would make him sound pathetic, for one, and he didn't want that. Maybe that's why no one wanted him. He was pathetic. He chuckled a bit, the sound hollow to even his ears. "I don't even know how to talk about it."

Caitlin looked up as Lore approached them and gave her a look. She wanted her to leave? She was here first! Before Rick even showed up, but she didn't comment. "Well, I've got to go finish packing and other stuff, so, uhm, bye," She said and grabbed her bag and sprinted off toward the castle, not getting phased as fast as she would normally, but it came in the end.

Lore was exasperated. She wasn't trying to kick the girl out of the talk, it's just she knew Rick wasn't going to be a fan of two people talking to him at the same time. "Caitlin!" She stopped. The girl was already gone. She knew what Rick meant about not knowing how to say it. "Then you don't have to. But if you ever need to tell me about it, I'm here." He sat down and took Eicks hand, not saying anything but silently being there with him. She didn't want to press it.

Rick frowned at Lore's response. How could he even tel Lore about it? Her family was probably just about as screwed up as his, and that's just from the few snippets she'd let out over the past two years. He wondered if she would even understand being as alone as he felt. He closed his eyes and put his head back in his arms. "Sorry I'm... not that good of company right now."

What Rick said surprised Lore. "I'm not here for me, Rick. I'm here for you. As long as you're not completely alone right now, I'm happy." We'll, maybe not happy, but happier.
She stared out across the lake. They only had a few days left of the year. Her escape was already almost over with. Time went by so fast. She wondered what was wrong with Rick. Had his Dad done something to him?

Nerissa swam towards the surface. She hadn't done this in a while. The year seemed to have just gone by her with no notice. There was no excitement for her on the surface. Most of the students didn't come to the lake to leave items behind, she learned early on. This disappointed her and left her to simply scavenge along the floor of the lake, instead.

There, she could find many items. Coins, ribbons, books sometimes. The ink was washed away and ruined, fading away like memories of being young. It disappointed her to see these books destroyed. They had to be very important for these students, because most of them had at least two or three of these books. The word was even invented by them! She had learned it by being observant.

When she broke the surface of the lake, she glanced around, noticing a pile of objects just... sitting there. Had someone forgotten that much stuff? Or had they just left for a moment? Nerissa looked around suspiciously. There was no one around that she could see.

In seconds, she dove under the water, "Better hurry," she hummed to herself. If she could examine the objects before the person arrived, she could better understand the witches and wizards and their world. Nerissa hoped, almost a little too much, that there was a book among those objects.

She wondered if she could even read their language? Despite this, she still wanted to try.

When Nerissa reached the shore, she resurfaced, glancing around cautiously again. Could never be too careful, right? When she was sure that no one was around, Nerissa reached for the objects. Her dainty hands were too far from the objects. The mermaid pulled herself up onto the shore in her eagerness to reach the objects. Pulling herself along the ground, she finally reached the objects.

There were more coins, pieces of parchment, some nature things like branches and grass, and, yes! A book! She excitedly opened it, careful not to wet the pages. The writing was still intact, and it was beautiful. The words made no sense to her, but she traced each line and stroke with her brain.

If she hadn't been so enthralled by such a book, she would have noticed a man approaching her with a net.

Cian ran down to the lake, smooth and undisturbed as a mirror. In his hand was a sneakoscope and his wand was in the other. His feet finally hit the pebbles on the shore and he knew he had finally gotten there. He was looking for Nerissa. He had promised he would show her a new Wizard object every time he saw her, and he intended to keep that promise.
His hand started to vibrate. In surprise, he looked down at the sneakoscope. It was starting to shake, dully, and a red light weakly escaped the device and reflected onto his hand. This surprised him. Why would there be an intruder at the lake. Also, normally Nerissa would have been here by now. Where was the mermaid? He called for her, over and over. His voice reverberated off of the damp boulders and green endless water. He looked around, slightly panicked. First the sneakoscope had rung, and now this.

"Nerissa! Where are you, dammit!"
Then he looked down at his feet. There was a pile of parchment, books, coins and branches. His mind started putting it together. One of the books was bent in a strange way, torn in some places as though it had been ripped from someone's hands. The rocks was indented, making a hollowed path as though something had been dragged across the shifting gray pebbles. Nerissa.

When they reached the lake, Cian hobbled over to the shore with Nerissa buried in his arms. He set her free into the deeper part of the lake, but not before kissing her on the forehead. Even as he disapparated, he didn't know why he had done it. He told her he would be back again soon, but was gone before she could react.

Nerissa held tightly to Cian as they made their way back from that horrible place. They were suddenly back at the lake, as though none of it had ever happened. Whatever Cian did to get them there, it left Nerissa feeling sick. If she had anything in her stomach, she was sure she would have vomited it up. It was an unpleasant feeling that she hoped she would never have to experience again. But, at least it got them back home. It was fast, too. Almost like they had just taken a step and were home. Nerissa could not argue with the effectiveness of the method, but she still did not like it. She wished she would have never had to have been in that awful place to begin with. Then she would never have had to go through that method to get back to her home. Of course, if she had never been taken, would Cian have cared enough to come visit her? This was the first time she had seen him in months. How had he known that she was gone?

The questions swam through her head as they made their way to the lake's edge. She wanted to ask him, as soon as she could. Right now, however, even if she asked, it would come out like horrible shrieks. There was no need to terrify him with her nature. She could wait until her head was under the water to ask him the questions she needed to know. After all that time in that horrible place, she deserved to know some answers. After all that time of not seeing Cian, she deserved to know why he hadn't even once visited her. The mermaid may come off as needy or silly, but she wanted to know. She felt as though she had a right to know what was going on. Why had these people taken her? What happened to all the others? How many people perished in the fighting? The biggest question of all: how did Cian know that she was there and how did he know where to find her?

Nerissa felt the cold of the water rush around her as Cian placed her into the water. The water felt good on her drying skin, but not nearly as good as the kiss he placed on her forehead. Her heart skipped a beat, and it made her sad. After all this time, what did he think of her? Not seeing her for so long, he must have thought that she was a silly thing. Saving her was probably him trying to save the silly thing from being hurt. Nothing more than a simple service to an old friend. But the kiss confused her. Was it like one that a father gives a child when he kisses them goodbye? Why did he torture her like this? He always left her, expecting her to wait for him to return. She knew he would not return. Especially because of the first time he said he would be back and never did. She had managed to scare him away, to push him away without trying, and it was happening again. With a pop, he was gone. Gone again from Nerissa.

She sank to the bottom of the lake, letting the water cool off her drying skin and hair. The memories of that awful place tried to surface, but she simply had no energy to think about them. Her brain was too tired to even let her mind wander. There comes a time when even thinking hurts. So, Nerissa simply floated there, landing gently on the sand at the bottom of the lake, her mind empty, her heart empty. She simply let the darkness around her envelope her and give her some sort of comfort. The other prisoners... Nerissa remembered suddenly. She wondered if they were doing this, too. Simply trying to get on with their lives, trying not to remember those horrible days. Perhaps they also didn't have the energy to think about them. They were young things, children. It would have a far more effect on them than Nerissa, or the vampire Arachnid. It would haunt them until they were older and it would affect the things they did and said. While Nerissa would reconsider a pile of objects on the edge of the lake, would they reconsider the approach of a stranger? Nerissa calmed her brain, trying not to think about it any longer.

Cian came back two days later, arm full of glass vials, a set of brass scales, and a large silver key. He did feel awful for leaving her when she had so many questions, but he figured they needed rest, the both of them. Especially her. He walked to the edge of the lake and set the objects down. He sat and waited to see if she would ever surface. It was cold but he didn't seemed to notice. Over the time since he had met Nerissa, he had started to feel for her. He presumed that was obvious by the kiss, but he didn't know. He stared down into the water at a silver fish swimming back and forth under a shelf of rock, his chin in his hand.

How long had she been floating down there? Sleeping, eating, waking, and swimming around just barely. For how long? Nerissa had barely moved. Just floated on the sand, only swimming around to find something small to eat, then only to return to her warm spot on the sand. There was a nice indent where she had been lying for the last couple days, and she would return there every time. Why? She had no idea. Perhaps because it was comfortable, it was familiar, or even because she just felt like it? In any case, that's where she practically lived, barely really actually thinking or doing anything. She wanted it to be boring. It was something that she found comfort in, especially after all that time in that strange place. Here, it was safe. It was not nearly dark where she laid, but it was dim and helped her feel a little at ease. It reminded her that this was her home, and it was safe as long as she remained in the safety of the water. Wizards and witches would sometimes enter the water, but not as deep as where Nerissa laid.

She found that her love for them and their culture had been greatly hindered by this recent experience. She could not look at the objects with the same curiosity and delight as she once had. They were strange things to her, that frightened her, and made her dream horrible nightmares. They burned when she touched them and made her cry at their sight. Even just a glimpse made her heart speed up with terror. There was no rest for Nerissa back in her home, where she had ignorantly decorated it with wizard objects prior to all the events that unfolded recently. She had always loved to look at them, ponder their purpose in wizard's lives, and had a genuine fascination for the objects all the years that she collected them, but now the objects were somehow disgusting to her. All because of the wizards that had taken her and harmed her and harmed others. Were all wizards capable of such monstrous actions? All these years, Nerissa had thought the wizards were such an amazing group of people; she had never believed that there was any evil in their hearts. Not until recently.

So, when she saw a shadow above her, above the surface of the lake, Nerissa cowered for a moment. The waves distorted the image, but Nerissa knew who it was. The stance was recognizable to her, even through the waves of the lake surface above her. She debated for a moment about whether or not she should make an appearance. After all he had done to and for Nerissa, could she forgive him? He had saved her from that terrible place, but then he had left her to wait again. Was she just a pet to the wizard? To be called upon whenever he was lonely or wanted to see his silly mermaid? Her cheeks flared red with anger at the thought. She was no one's pet, much less this wizard's. After all that had happened, he didn't even bother to come check on her sooner? Answer her questions sooner? He left. Again. But, at least it was only two days, a voice in her head chimed. Despite this, Nerissa found herself pursing her lips as she slowly pushed herself from the floor of the lake that she had been lying on.

Slowly, she floated to the surface. Her head emerged from the lake, her arms crossed across her chest to show her displeasure. Her eyes were hard as she looked at Cian, her hair covering part of her face as she floated there. With lips still pursed, Nerissa looked pretty upset, just floating there, a few meters from the shore where Cian sat, with the vile wizard objects that Nerissa wondered if she would find interesting ever again. He sat there, so calm, so collected, while Nerissa was a bit peeved at the whole scenario. She certainly felt like a pet at this point, and this wizard needed to understand that that was unacceptable to Nerissa. He was in trouble with a mermaid, and he had a lot of explaining to do.

When Nerissa surfaced, Cian's lips opened in surprise before closing again. She was nearly glaring at him, like he thought she would be. He deserved it.
At first he didn't know what to say, and when her eyes passed over the objects he had brought for her, he felt even worse. She looked distastefully at them, and Cian slowly began to understand why. His eyes were bright but hidden behind the lashes that were covering them in shame.

"Nerissa...I'm sorry. I'm sorry I never visited you again after I first met you. I guess I was...I don't know, afraid? I hadn't heard too much about merpeople before and I was going to visit you, I swear. But then doubt took a hold of me and the place I work at started picking up speed and, never mind. No excuses. I consider you a friend though, and when I found you were gone after trying to visit you for the first time in a long time, you were gone. I went to go tell a friend you were gone, and it turned out they were missing people too."
He took a breath and held it a little while before looking back at her, long tail hidden behind the dark, freezing water.
" The thing is, they had one of the people who had taken you and the others. We tried to get her to tell us where you all were, but she gave us a false location. One of us almost died because of a trap they had set at the decoy house, but he's still alive. Anyway, we came back and finally figured out where you all were. I got you and took you here, and most of the other people are okay. We punished the bad people that took you. You don't have to worry about them ever again. I know you probably don't like me much anymore, but I've started maybe...developing feelings for you. I gave you a couple of days to rest, because I didn't think you would want to revisit the event so soon. I'm sorry. Now, I bet you want to yell at me, so I'm just going to get in the water so I can listen. I promise I won't hurt you." He finished, still shy. He made a show of leaving his wand and the objects far up the shore, along with the majority of his clothes. He would rather be cold as hell then being cold as hell and then having cold clothes. He slowly eased himself into the water, and took a breath before going underwater. She wouldn't be able to talk very well if they weren't both under the surface.

Coming through the path they came to the lake side. There were quite a few boats on the docks waiting for the children. Pointing to the dock, she instructed them on what to do. "Please go ahead and get in the boats, those who sit in the front need to hold the lantern please. If you are nervous you can get in my boat at the front. No horse play please and keep out of the lake." She instructed as she watched them all carefully. She was normally a bit more playful but she just didn't want to mess this up her first year. All she needed was to have some kid fall in and a mermaid pull them away into the lake.

Her eyes widened when she seen the lake. So did Trinket's. Her cat struggled in her arms, but she just couldn't bear to let her go! She moved towards Kat's boat, afraid of.. Well, everything. To her, the lake looked dark and menacing, like it would reach a hand into the boat and drag her deep, deep below... "Stop that!" she thought angrily, "You're scaring yourself!" She took one shaky step into the boat, then another, then sank down onto the floor of the boat.

Tobi followed Kat (what kinda Gate keeper calls herself "Kat"?) and the other first years to the lake and viewed all the wooden rickety boats they were supposed to put their lives into. Surprisingly he wasn't amused. "I suppose we should get inta one of those...." he spoke to Bradley quietly before sinking himself into the wooden boat. Looking at his placement-he was lower in a boat still holding his friend's hand from above-Tobi grinned and bowed majestically. "Your boat awaits." when he came back up his eyes were sparkling with mirth.

Good morning and good night
I'll end up at twilight
It's gonna be alright
We don't even have to try
It's always a good time
