Ok, this may sound weird but- I don't understand this Vocoloid thing and why it is popular. What is it?

To my understanding, Vocaloid is a voice synthesizer in Japan. Its also a game that gives characters to these voices. Its like dance dance revolution with singing robots.

I never played the game but I do like a lot of the vocaloid songs.
