Decadence Model: Sarah Designer: Alesaan Description: Burlesque. Feathers, fun and fringe. Glitter, gold and glitz. Satin, silk and stockings. Ruffles, roses and revelry. The dancing, the costumes, the makeup, the music, the cocktails..... there is nothing quite like burlesque! I agree with Dante Dolly that only the blue stage didn't overwhelm my model, but that the stage is a necessary element of the burlesque concept. And the blue offset the raspberry hue beautifully. I knew I wanted movement in Sarah's limbs and that ruffles as static poses wouldn't feel right for a burlesque show. Feathers, ruffles and a cleavage bearing bodice were musts for me. Over the top decadence and a sexy, sensual look is what I went for. But equally important was that the outfit and Sarah needed to look like they were having fun. Burlesque is the celebration of all these design elements, the interplay between various textures, of showmanship upon the stage and the human (particularly female) form. And celebrations are about fun.

Caged Angel Modle: Wanda Designer: AmberEmma Description: Now personally I don't know much about burlesque but luckily for me, I have a friend who could help me out. She told me of a burlesque icon named Dita Von Teese. After looking at a few of her outfits I found one that really stood out to me so I decided to use it as inspiration. In the end, this is what I went with. I decided to have the outfit designed to be like a caged angel put on display for all to see. I chose pink and white for my main color scheme because I felt that it helped add an elegant and soft feel to the outfit. I feel that the outfit is sexy but still has a soft show of femininity. A lot of this outfit was trial and error till I found what went best and I do feel that the simplistic look to this outfit helps it stand out. I did have a few problems with the area around the legs. At first, it felt as though it needed more but anytime I added a skirt I felt that it took away from the outfit. After a bit of searching, I found a thin back skirt that worked perfectly.

Celestial BodyDesigner: elphiethesane Model: Helen Description: When I saw this challenge, I almost immediately realized a big challenge for me would be my model’s expression. She has a tendency to look almost sad, and definitely not playful or sexy like I think of when I think of burlesque. I thought the best way to combat this would be to “hide” her expression a bit, and when I thought of fan dance I thought that might be a good idea to play off of... Covering herself with a fan, looking over the edge. I did originally want her to be topless behind the fan, but the items didn’t quite work out right, though I think with the positioning of her arms it looks like she could be. To be honest, I don’t have much else to say about this one. I played around with various fans, coming up with different options for different color schemes, and played around with options without the fan too, just in case I could find something better. But while I came up with things I liked, I kept coming back to this one. It’s a color scheme I love, and I think it looks good with Helen’s coloring. Not too pastel, which would probably be the most obvious move, and not as dark as I’ve done in my last couple entires. It just appeals to me. On a final note, I should probably mention the moon is mostly there so she’d have something to sit on, since the legs that balanced the colors best were sitting ones. I think it works, though, since it seems a number of burlesque acts use big props like that. It doesn’t really work with any of the stage backgrounds I found, though, so I felt I couldn’t use one like my fellow competitors, which is unfortunate as it really is an ideal addition to a burlesque look.

elphiethesane (Helen) Positive: This design is beautiful - simply beautiful!! You always deliver with Helen and it's clear that the smartest thing you ever did was switch models. Had you not done that, it's possible you wouldn't be here today. Negative: Everything works together and looks gorgeous, but this design isn't burlesque. It's missing the flamboyant and vibrant lifestyle that the look embraces and would better suit a 20's or lounge singer theme. Additionally, Pink would have been a better colour for the theme, paired with something big and fluffy.
AmberEmma (Wanda) Positive: Your descruption was excellent and it's appreciated that you drew inspiration from Dita Von Teese, who's literally the best of the best. Negative: There was disconnect between your intention and your design. The 'bird in a cage' idea was brilliant, but you might have gone a bit too literal with it, adding in items that clutter the model. If wings were necessary, it would have benefit you to make them part of the costume, which they feel separate from. Additionally, the colours were wrong for Wanda. Your win with Wanda displayed her in bold golds and we would have loved to see a return of that colour scheme, along with some deeper reds, like you showed us in the background.
Alesaan (Sarah) Positive: The description was essentially used here and saved you from appearing like a 'copycat' for using the same background as Dante. It's clear that you understand and embrace the burlesque theme and putting Sarah in motion was a huge standout! Negative: There's just too much white! With Sarah's pale skin, the bodice blends in, giving her torso a big void and making it appear as though Sarah has a 'big ol' head'. That white space needs to be broken up with something, like a veil to hide her 'fivehead' and/or a bustier that featured more of the raspberry colour, which compliments Sarah's fair complexion perfectly.
Dante Dolly (Melissa) Positive: As more submissions came in, marking on the curve worked in your favour, cementing this piece as a solid entry. Nothing about it says that it's not burlesque, from the poses, to the feathers and the confetti. Negative: Without the curve to mark on, this garment is only good as a standalone. Against your other designs, this doesn't stand out as much, especially with 3 challenge wins under your belt. Also, there was a colour hiccup on the forehead with the very out-of-place purple beading and with the hot pink confetti.
