Challenge 8: The Ugly Duckling
x_suicide_is_inevitable_x (Daphne) Score: 5 Comments: I'm struggling with this one. I don't hate it by any means, but I don't think it really fits the challenge. At all really. And the yellow paired with the red back ground is...not my favourite color combination. The white gloves of the arm mod paired with the white stockings also leaves her skin oddly covered up? But I love the description, and for the intention, I like this avatar. Visibly balanced. Just doesn't fit the challenge really.
khionna (Veronica) Score: 9 Comments: When I first saw this one, I didn't really like it. But the more I look at it, the more I really do. The green color was a great choice, though I also wish there was more black. Things feel more balanced though, and like Dante said, I like how the hair seems to match the look.
Tink_Bel (Zahara) Score: 6.5 Comments: I don't really like the stars where they're at, if they weren't so close to her face it would be better. I don't get floating at all, which hurts it. I get a young fairy or girl playing dress up kind of frolicking and enjoying herself, which is just fine, but it isn't floating. The blue and cream pair well together, but I think the cream is just the wrong shade on the model. The shading and shine is different on...every bit of skin. Which while I appreciate Tink getting her submission in early, I think if she'd taken longer that wouldn't have been a problem.
METTAT0N (Ebony) Score: 6.5 Comments: I'm loving this silhouette. I love the colors - but not on this model, and how things were balanced. But good lord it feels like every demonic colored item on the site has been thrown on the poor girl, and it doesn't super fit the challenge. She's cute, and I don't hate it. But I just don't think it's right for the challenge.
Kiwi Cannoli (Brooke) Score: 7 Comments: This is forgettable. It's a beautiful color on the model, she looks great, this is a swan look. I like the balance and the post. Nothing is wrong with this look. But with some of the other looks, it makes it one of the better looks.
egggoat (Xoco) Score: 8 Comments: This seems like an ideal look to kind of cover the mouth and help things? This outfit is adorable, and it isn't forgettable, which is nice. I wish the color was even just a few shades more vibrant and it would look a lot better on the model. I like this. Could have been a lot better, but I like it.

I'm truly and sincerely sorry that I dropped off the face of the earth. Kitten woes and financial struggles abounded the last few weeks and Gaia slipped my mind. I'll try not to vanish like that again.
Challenge 8: The Ugly Duckling
Group crit (applies to everyone): I'd like to start off by saying I REALLY wish a contestant would have been creative enough to hide this model's problem area (read: nose/mouth) with a fan or mask or something. Overall, I'm somewhat disappointed that everyone went with such simple looks, but I'll try not to take it out on the scores too harshly since it's fairly even across the board. gonk
x_suicide_is_inevitable_x (Duckling) Score: 5 Comments: What I liked: the description (lots of detail), the concept (the face really does scream yandere), the simple contrasting background. What I want different: the outfit (there isn't much to it), a different color (the yellow isn't the worst, but it's not the best), ANY OTHER ARM MOD. That mod is played out. Played to death on yandere avatars.
khionna (Duckling) Score: 9 Comments: This is probably the only entry where the face doesn't stand out as much, that's a good thing! I LOVE that khionna accounted for the pixel style in the hair, because it's honestly driving me nuts in other entries. You can really see the synchronicity in the hat and legs, and even though it doesn't carry through the dress quite as well, I appreciate the attempt. The green is very rich. I wish there was more black throughout, but it's just a nitpick.
Tink_Bel (Duckling) Score: 5.5 Comments: I keep going back and forth on if I like this entry or not. Some parts are cute. I like the flower in the hair, the peacock blue, the little fairy wings. But I'm really not a fan of how close those creams are to Duckling's complexion, nor how the model appears to be puking those stars. My biggest problem though is that the arms, legs, and face all look like different skin tones (despite being the same) because attention was not paid to how the items are shaded. It's just kind of, meh.
METTAT0N (Duckling) Score: 7 Comments: So, I actually LOVE the silhouette. I think the items look great together and this would be SUCH an amazing outfit...on a different model. Metta went with high saturation and a hard-edge pixel style–the exact opposite of Duckling's features. Instead of creating a nice contrast, it instead gives the sense of an outfit floating over a paper doll (or a paper outfit over a real person, take your pick). The point is they just don't connect.
Kiwi Cannoli (Duckling) Score: 6.5 Comments: What I liked: poppy (possibly my favorite color on the model over all), cute little outfit. What I don't: I'm bored to death.
egggoat (Duckling) Score: 6.5 Comments: Another case where the outfit is solid, but it really doesn't connect with the model. The color washes her out too.

~ Eight: Ugly Duckling ~ Kiwi - 7 Poppy was a good choice of color, and the model looks cute. Nicely assembled, adorable and pretty forgettable kiss of death cute. The arm pose was great, and the pieces of the outfit do go really well together as it looks like it all came from the same item. But shy of the fox or wolf or whatever creature is on the skirt part, I won't remember this entry two minutes from now. egggoat - 8.5 This intrigues me. This shade of pink with the white in the rain works. The beret and chic deconstructed jacket work for me. I like the socks with the boots, though the boots are kinda plain. The only thing I think I would like to see played with more is the skirt choice. The hem line and ruff plain and the color gets lost into the coat as it is too matchy. Suicide - 7 I love the skirt, the headband and the arm pose. I really could have done without the blood and knife. I get the yandere-type character vibe for sure, but I want to see this model highlighted more with the take someone who could be seen as awkward/ugly and make her a swan. So I think this design doesn't fit the challenge well. khionna - 9 She certainly looks snappy - both chic and well put together. Those shoes are fab and I love the jacket tossed over her shoulder. The title is perfect and the description of the process was great. I would have sworn that dress was one piece and not four pieces. I'm curious to know what pieces they are. Well done. mettat0n - 8 I love love love this outfit but I really feel it misses the point of the challenge. She looks like a stylish hipster kid, and not a swan. Yeah she got a cool makeover, and she does look pretty awesome, but I don't feel like the challenge was to make her hip? Maybe I'm just a stickler for the story but I expect an attempt at a beauty queen swan and not the queen bee party queen. Tink - 7.5 The soft cream/rosette hue is lovely, and I love all the delicate details of this outfit and headpiece. I thought her bare feet and stars attacking her face were weird, and I don't get a sense of floating on air even with the wings alas. Maybe if wings in motion were used? And something wispy in the background and a non-eating-her-face star addition? I would also like something else of that green color to make this feel more complete to me?

Challenge 9: She's so cute!
khionna (Veronica) Score: 7 Comments: Love seeing a bold little goth lolita look, and Veronica is the perfect model for it, especially after some looks we've seen her in over the course of the competition. This is strongly balanced, and I love the unique footwear - especially compared to the others. In theory I like a face mask, and I get where she was going with it and why she chose it. It does bring some white up, but I'm not sure I needed the white there. I don't really care for the mask and how much it covers her face. Since her skin is covered from the neck down, and she has things on her head, all we see of Veronica is her eyes. I want to see more of Veronica. On second look to really judge? She has the same parasol as Xoco - just a different color - and it looks like the same spiky headband. Which I appreciate there aren't many parasol options, but there really isn't a need for the same item to be getting used in the same way at this point.
Tink_Bel (Daphne) Score: 8 Comments: I'm so glad to see no glasses, and it's exciting to see Tink work with such a different model this round! I think this look is more pretty than cute, and is a little lack luster in some senses, but I really like it in others. Daphne is a precious porcelain doll, pale and fragile looking, which kind of works for me. I think the headband feels a little heavy. I like the purse. Like that it doesn't have glasses or a parasol and stands apart from the other looks.
METTAT0N (Brooke) Score: 6 Comments: Brooke is in demure again, but, there's no denying she looks good in it. This does feel lolita to me, and I like the volume of the skirt and all the layering she put into the look as a whole. She looks cute, and the clothing does look like a child would wear it in the Victorian Era. The only reason this isn't getting a higher score are the glasses. One lens layers over the hair, the other one barely shows up over the other eye because the frame is so pale, which only emphasizes the flaw of it layering over the hair on the other side. It just keeps demanding my attention, and it seriously hurts an otherwise great look. Maybe a bit too much going on with the head pieces too.
Kiwi Cannoli (Zahara) Score: 5 Comments: The crown has to go. The skirt is full and amazing, it's absolutely the kind of skirt I would want to see with it's volume. Might be a little...pretty for lolita? Or maybe it just isn't layered enough or isn't Victorian enough...I'm not sure just what it is about it that doesn't quite scream lolita to me, but something is missing. It's almost a little more like a small princess? Idk. There's something off and lacking.
egggoat (Xoco) Score: 9 Comments: I'm not sure why both looks so far have the barely visible glasses frames? But it works far better here. If anything I wish the skirt were a little bigger, but that's a very small critique for a cute and strong lolita look. This is so obviously lolita. It is balanced, these are beautiful colors together and beautiful on Xoco. This could probably be a ten, but there's just...something missing. If I figure out what that is, I'll add it in. But for right now I just know I want to see more.

9: Cute/Lolita
MET- Brooke- 8.5 Shy of the glasses, this looks exactly like what little I know of Lolita to me. The voluminous skirt, enhanced by stockings with a skinny beg shape (and cute shoes), the little parasol, and headpiece of some sort. I'm glad the reuse of demure was mentioned, but Brooke does look great in the color scheme. Really the only thing I think makes the ensemble look a little cluttered is the earrings/glasses that run into them.
Egg - Xoco- 7 I love the use of four hues, seafoam, the soft purple/pink, the pale yellow and white. I always appreciate when more than a two/three color scheme is tried out. Again, as with the above critique, I just don't get the glasses. Is this a lolita theme I missed? The arm sleeves and umbrella is fun. The shoes are boring. The headpiece fits and I think would have stood out more if I wasn't drawn to the color of the glasses on her face. I think it would frame her better without the glasses.
Tink - Daphne - 6 I absolutely adore the skirt choice with the tiered ruffles and the neck bow. But this sadly looks a little ho hum after the first two entries. The use of a cute purse was a great touch, but I don't like the headpiece and I'm not sold on the color scheme. Looks kinda drab on her to me. Like with Egg, the shoe choice was boring.
khionna- Veronica - 9 Love, love love the color scheme. Very different and yet the outfit clearly says Lolita. I'm clearly a sucker for the umbrella/parasol prop and I love its addition. Adding the extra layer to the skirt was a smart move and while I'm not a huge fan of the face mask, it is very common in a lot of the lotlita styles from what I saw online so I am not docking anything for it. Shoes are super fun, and this is a great look for the model.
Kiwi - Zahara - 6 Love that arm pose and the skirt. The pastels looks pretty on Zahara, but I feel like there is too much white in this outfit. An the puffy neckline ruff is eh. I would play around with that a bit more. The crown was a terrible choice. Not really lolita nor pretty nor fitting with the rest of the outfit.

I shouldn't be so amused that our scores were near identical just for the opposite people, but I am haha. All the same, looks like we have eggoat and khionna on top, and Kiwi is on the chopping block.
I have no real preference between egg and khionna, despite my scores saying otherwise, their looks truly are nearly identical. Like yin yang of one another, haha. Who would you rather see get the win?
Or we could call it the tie it is, give them both the win?
Or if Dante or Goddess doesn't show up again for this challenge, could ask one or both of the mentors to do some judging and break the tie?
What are your thoughts? I apologize for throwing a lot at you at once, haha.

Challenge 9: She's so cute! Sorry this is last minute! khionna (Veronica) Score: 4 Comments: The dress is lovely and I wanted to like this one for branching into gothic lolita and standing out, but the longer I look at it the less I like. First of all, cardinal sin at this point using the same mod as egg. Gaia is literally puking lolita items (including parasols okay, I own like two dozen), a repeated mod was not required. To top it off the arms get lost in the dress. I love the idea of the mask, hate how bright white it is. The worst part for me those are those shoes. They are ninja shoes and disqualify the look as being lolita given that a close-toed shoe is a required staple. Even if I were to overlook that, it all feels very "on-brand dress, but ita cord" to me. Tink_Bel (Daphne) Score: 6 Comments: I appreciate the attempt at doing something different than the umbrella warriors, but I'm not sold. Daphne's hair has a distinct pixel style that doesn't mesh well with the outfit. The skirt is adorable, the look is even good, but the colors are lost on this pale model. A stronger pink might have saved the day. METTAT0N (Brooke) Score: 7.5 Comments: Colors look great! Whole outfit is very cute. I like the concept behind the glasses, but they blend too much with the face. The arm mod is the wrong skin tone, come ooon. I wish the skirt had more layers, but overall a good look. Kiwi Cannoli (Zahara) Score: 3 Comments: The dress is one of my favorites, but it's missing a longer shirt beneath or the illusion of a jumper, just looks like a gown. Also, the headpiece is all wrong. She's got no accessories! The worst part for me are the colors, they wash Zahara out and what a thing to do to a dark model, they just do not work. I like some parts of this more than khionna's, but it's technically worse. egggoat (Xoco) Score: 9 Comments: The colors are so rich and pretty, the shape is there and volumous. Again, I wish the designer had put more into the skirt since everyone seems to have used premade items, one and done, but the rest of the outfit composition makes up for it and that's what we look for here. The glasses I could take or leave. I really like the look and that the colors lend to Xoco rather than rob her.

It’s totally okay! The site issues have messed everyone up, but I’m super glad you were able to get judging in. I didn’t want it to be just two judges opinions, haha. We got our game plan! Sorry, just saw your first message. That is amusing! I never look at scores or read any other judge's descriptions until after all four/three of us have posted them all (shy of like the first and second rounds when I had no idea what I was doing yet). That way it keeps it fresh for me to see all the thoughts and see what I missed or didn't consider. We all do have different style senses and opinions which I like smile As a heads up Nov 17th - 24th I'm probably going to be completely off the internet (headed back East to take the kiddo to see his other side of the family. Should have like 100+ family members up in Boston on the day after Thanksgiving. Going to be nuts). So when I am back on the 25th I'll be able to do whatever and get online again.
