"Dwebble, take inspiration from our friend and use Counter!" Burgh declared with a flourish of the hand. His Dwebble would retreat into its shell and prepare its self for the coming impact. Samurai would strike hard and true, the little Dwebble's world rocked by the Super Effective Aqua Jet despite being in its shell. However something surprising would happen as the earthen shell was completely shattered on impact. Before the pieces of Dwebble's Weak Armor even hit the ground it lunged at Samurai with shocking speed, grabbing a hold of the Water-type and using its own momentum against it, along with the Bug-type's even more advanced speed, would spin the otter around and hurl it towards a nearby tree to slam it into.

"You shouldn't have done that," I smirked as Samurai slid off the tree he collided with. As the Dewott picked himself up, a foul energy emitted from his right fist. "Samurai, push your enemies' power back to him. Revenge!"
Samurai grinned darkly, then leapt up at Dwebble, looking to land fist-first on the Rock-type.Once he landed, hit or miss, he'd tumble backwards and draw his scalchops in a defensive position, ready for his next command.

The Revenge struck true and massively hard, sweeping the Dwebble right off the ground, sending it hurtling all the way across the gym until it connected with a wall with an audible thud, the little Bug promptly falling to the ground with a lighter thud thanks to the grass where it immediately passed out. "Ooo! What an elegant counter! Truly worthy of a painting! You must let me use your Dewott as an art subject one day." Burgh beamed happily as he recalled his Pokemon, apparently he would be an artist first and foremost before anything else. "Hopefully I can inspired you further with this next one!" He said, then tossing out another Pokeball, the ball barely bouncing off the grass before popping open to reveal a Whirlipede. Terashi would recall having faced its evolved form in his last gym battle, providing him with at least some insight on what to expect. "Toxic Spikes!" Burgh commanded with a flourish. The Curlipede Pokemon would respond to the command by wildly spinning around in place, hurling purple spikes all around the gym, the spikes immediately disappearing into the grass. While they become difficult to see in the grass they were just as troubling to step on.

Samurai started to step back as the Toxic Spikes scattered around him, but he quickly realized that he was surrounded - there wasn't a lot of room to move without risking getting Poisoned.
I sighed at that. I was planning on switching Samurai out when Dwebble fainted, but doing that now would be putting whoever I switched into in danger. "Guess you'll have to stay in the fight, Samurai. So, open up with Air Slash!" I ordered.
With a nod, Samurai held his scalchops back and infused them with Flying-type energy before slashing at Whirlipede creating vortexes in the air - resembling the arcs of Samurai's swings - that then flew at Whirlipede.

Burgh stood firm as the the cuts of air slashed against his Pokemon's body, the Whirlipede curling up tight as it endured the Super Effective hit. When it was all over the Whirlipede would open its eyes and give the Dewott an angry glare. "Yes! Take that emotion and make a masterpiece with it! Poison Sting!" The gym leader ordered. The Curlipede Pokemon would respond to the command by rapidly spinning in place, so fast that it become little more than a blurry purple orb. From this 'orb' came the purple spikes on its body, dripping with poison and flying all over the place at violent speeds. While plenty of them came at Dewott their trajectory was so erratic that many became lodged in the various trees around them.

I flinched when I saw Samurai getting stuck with one of Whirlipede's Poison Sting missiles. Given how quickly Dwebble fell, this was the second hit Samurai took so far, so he should still have energy left - unless Poison Sting succeeded in poisoning him. To my surprise, however, Samurai took the time to pull the spike out of himself and motion for Whirlipede to step it up. He must have plenty of energy if he was still that cocky, which means it was highly unlikely that he was Poisoned by that. Still, I had to pay attention to Samurai's energy - I didn't know that he could take that many more hits. My fault for not battling with him as much lately.
"Alright, Samurai, bring the fight to your enemy with Acrobatics!" I shouted. Samurai, with a malicious grin, leapt into the air and, after twirling a bit to gather Flying-type energy, flopped in Whirlipede's general direction. With as flashy as Acrobatics was, I didn't doubt that Whirlipede would have a bit of an easier time dodging, but I kept on my guard, waiting to see what the enemy would do next.

"Roll towards it and use Protect!" Burgh commanded with a flourish.
Utilizing newfound speed from its ability, Speed Boost, the Curlipede would rapidly roll towards Samurai, intending to meet its Acrobatics head on. Moments before impact the Bug would throw up a green colored shield of energy around it to guard against the Flying move with the secondary intent being to use the impact from the collision to send the slower and smaller Pokemon flying and hopefully catch it off guard so it steps on a few of those Toxic Spikes hidden in the grass.

Samurai did indeed get bounced back, but I intended on him getting a few more hits in before the poison took him. 'Control your descent with Aqua Jet!"
It took Samurai a second due to the poison starting to affect him, but he managed to dodge the Toxic Spikes just in time, turning around to bear down on Whirlipede once more. While this move wasn't super-effective, it was sufficient for him to press the offensive.

The Aqua Jet would strike true, Whirlipede not quick enough this time to defend against the attack, the accumulated momentum knocking the bug off the ground and sending it flying backwards until it hit the ground rolling. That hurt pretty good but the defensive bug wasn't done just yet.
"I admire your Pokemon's strength! I could see him in a traditional Johtonese painting! The proud warrior of the river!" Burgh beamed, the artist in him coming out as he was taking inspiration from Samurai. It wasn't until his Whirlipede hissed that he snapped back to reality. "Ah! Yes! Whirlipede, Pin Missile!"
Choosing not to engage directly this time, as Terashi kept proving that Samurai excelled in close quarters, the Whirlipede would stay in place and instead choosing to spin around violently, flinging small Bug energy infused needles all across the gym. The spray was wild as the needles hit trees, ceiling, and walls and more importantly it was intended to hit Samurai.

To Samurai's credit, he did the best he could - using Razor Shell to deflect as many pins as he had strength. But he had just been overpowered at this point, having taken a few too many hits at this point.. He was overrun by Pin Missile and fainted with his scalchops in his hands.
"You did good, buddy," I said quietly out of respect for my original starter as I recalled him. "Still," I added, looking up at Burgh. "If long range is more your thing, I'm better off switching to a Pokemon that can match you in that strategy. Sparrow, come out and make sure not to touch the ground!"
With that, I unleashed my Talonflame into the battlefield. Fortunately, since she was a Flying-type, and she was fresh, she could keep herself airborne without touching the ground first, therefore not running the risk of getting poisoned. "On second thought, keeping you in the air will just wear you out faster. Clear a space for you to land on. Use Whirlwind on the Toxic Spikes!"
Sparrow aimed her wings at Whirlipede, flinging several Toxic Spikes at the Bug-type with the wind she would whip up. Once enough ground had been cleared that she didn't endanger herself upon landing, she did so, although she didn't have a lot of ground to move around on, so she wouldn't be able to dodge oncoming attacks perfectly without taking to the air.

While Samurai was finally taken down there was no time to celebrate as the persistent otter was replaced with an even greater threat in the form of a Talonflame. Immediately the bird swept away numerous Toxic Spikes to make a safe patch of ground to land on, the discarded spikes safely absorbing into the Whirlipede body, however the Whirlwind's main effect would kick in as the bug was blown back into its Pokeball. Another Pokeball in Burgh's possession would be compelled to open and release its contents as another Bug took the former's place. "Leavanny!" The Nurturing Pokemon cried out as it was so abruptly brought onto the field. "Splendid counter! You have not only put me in a very unfavorable situation but have forced me to bring out my ace Pokemon earlier than planned. Ah, your muse guides you well." Burgh complimented Terashi. "But alas so does mine. Leavanny, use Electroweb!" The gym leader ordered. With firm shout of confirmation the Leavanny would quickly get to wrote, pulling out strings of silk and rapidly weaving them together in a blink of an eye to form a seemingly small net. In one fluid motion the Bug would leap up and away from the Talonflame while simultaniously throwing the net-like web at the bird. The 'net' would expand greatly in size in midair in hopes of causing its foe to misjudge its size. The 'shocking' part would came late once it made contact with the target, then it would receive a zap and damper on its speed.

I couldn't help but wax nostalgic when I saw Burgh's Leavanny, the sight reminding me of a Leavanny that I once trained. I didn't have enough time for a flashback, though. "Speaking of counters," I said grimly as Electroweb soared toward my Talonflame. "Sparrow, Flame Charge!"
Sparrow caww'd and leapt forward, cloaking her feathers in fire and flying through Electroweb. While the electric-type energy of the web would be super-effective at dealing damage to the bird, the flames surrounding her would burn through the web, preventing it from snaring her. The speed reduction of the move would only reduce the speed she gained from Flame Charge, and with Electroweb burned away, Burgh's Leavanny was exposed, ripe for taking some super-effective damage of its own via Sparrow's continued Flame Charge.

Burgh smiled as the Talonflame closed in on his Pokemon. While Talonflame were powerful physical attackers and the Fire type was one of two types Leavanny had a tremendous weakness to they did manage to slow it down, or rather deny it from gaining further speed and thus they just might have a chance at surviving this, however by 'skin of its teeth' as some might say. "String Shot the ceiling and brace yourself!" Burgh ordered. The Nurturing Pokemon would do exactly as ordered as it fired off a lone string of silk at the ceiling and held onto it tight, planting its feet into the ground firmly. As Sparrow made impact the flames washed over the Grass and Bug type Pokemon's body causing it to screaming out in tremendous pain. For just seconds Leavanny held its ground until it was swept off its feet and sent flying backwards. However, the Pokemon managed to hold onto its String Shot rope, the momentum slinging the barely conscious Pokemon up and over Sparrow in the air like a wild wrecking ball. As the Pokemon came around from behind Burgh shouted out one more command. "Now Flail!" The artist ordered. Mustering all its might, and using the tremendous pain it just suffered as fuel, Leavanny would erratic ram its body into the Talonflame, its body giving off a white glow. Upon impact it would use its time to kick, punch, headbutt, you name it, anything it could do to Flail around and let out the frustration from the pain it suffered.

I flinched, trying not to think about Sunny looking like that Leavanny did when it was in pain. I had to stop beating myself up over it if I wanted to claim this badge. Unfortunately, Sparrow was in worse straits, being knocked to the side by the frustratedly flailing Leavanny.
I grunted and forced myself to focus before looking to Sparrow. "Stay out of range, Sparrow! Use Fire Blast to finish the fight!"
Once Sparrow was on her feet, she hopped back, trying to make sure that Leavanny's Flail couldn't hit her again. Once she was certain she was far enough out of range to not take another attack, she belted a Fire Blast at the injured Grass/Bug type.

"Leavanny, stand firm and use String Shot on the needles and spikes and pull them in!" Burgh quickly ordered as Terashi commanded the Fire Blast. The gym leader knew there was no feasible way they could avoid it despite its inaccuracy, Leavanny was too weakened and even if they dodged it would only delay the inevitable. So instead they would use the brief window where the bird conjured up the necessary flame to fire off such a powerful move to get in one last strike.
The Nurturing Pokemon would fling out lines of String Shot behind Talonflame, the expert sewer and master of silk spinning accurately hitting numerous Toxic Spikes and Pin Missile needles left behind by Whirlipede, a scheme Burgh had planned all this time and yet he did not plan on such a foe as a Talonflame.
As the Fire Blast closed in Leavanny would pull on all the strings with all its might and send flying towards its self, and thus Sparrow who was between the source of the String Shots and their now attached targets, the spikes and needles. The Fire Blast would score a directly hit with a furious explosion of flame but the bird who created the blast would find its self pelted with the Toxic Spikes and the Pin Missiles and while the later wouldn't harm it too much the Toxic Spikes were more of a concern.
"Very good, you have performed tremendously! You have kept the upper hand for the majority of this battle!" Burgh said with pride for Terashi as he recalled Leavanny. "I already can see the picture you are painting and it is one of triumph but as a gym leader I must fight to the bitter end and finish the sketch on my own canvas. Whirlipede, come back and use Venoshock!" Burgh ordered as he once again tossed out Whirlipede's Pokemon.
As soon as the Curlipede Pokemon appeared it would launch from its body lighting-like bolts of purple 'electricity' which would zip through the air towards Talonflame, hoping to hit and dramatically increase the toxins in its system left behind by the Toxic Spikes and give it a very painful jolt.
