The sweet, warm, fresh scent of his kill filled his nostrils with a hazy bliss. He placed a massive paw on the doe's already mauled torso to keep her from squirming. Protectively, he glanced around himself, his piercing ruby eyes narrow. Eventually, he relaxed and lowered his head. Nobody was here to steal his kill this time. At this, and the doe's desperate, pained whining, he growled lowly in merriment. The brute parted his jaws in a malicious grin, only to violently close his jaws around the dying human's neck. The sharp, sickening sound of the bones giving and the gurgle of blood in the doe's throat pleased him greatly. He tugged at the flesh greedily, until his incisors had successfully torn apart the victim's jugular vein. His kill now lay still and lifeless before him. The silence was bitter-sweet for this sadistic predator. He raised his head slightly, releasing her neck. Jaws parted, warm blood slowly dripped from his large canines and matted the grass below him. His breath came in large, enthusiastic huffs that sent his sides heaving. A soft breeze blew, and the brute lowered his ears tightly against his skull. His muscles twitched, irritated by the soft tickle of the tall grass on his legs. The world had since grown hot and green. Too much so for this brute. He missed the sight of trees naked in their dormancy, and the dismal, looming gray clouds that promised snow. But nostalgia could only take him so far, and soon his mind was fixed again on the overwhelming scent of blood that his kill exuded. In moments, his head hung low once again and he began to feast.

The faint scent of another being snaked between the minute spaces of his ravenous hunger and his sanity, and he raised his head. He stood low and defensively, looming over his kill with his ears standing on end and his tail high. Narrow eyes keenly scanned his surroundings. Briefly, he took in a couple sharp breaths, trying to catch the scent again. A female. And she was close. A low growl rumbled deep in his throat as he pondered this. His tail drooped as he relaxed, but he still stood completely rigid. It seemed he had stumbled upon pack territory. As this realization hit him, his ears folded back against his head in discomfort. He stood in silence, his eyes distant, for many long moments. Eventually, he snorted, and lowered his head back to his kill. Though he tore equally greedily at the tender flesh, it tasted much less enjoyable than it did before. Another pack... He swallowed, and the meat went down much too slowly, much too tauntingly, for comfort.

The brute ceased his feeding once again. Before, the scent seemed stationary, but now... Now it was getting closer. He exhaled sharply, a sort of silent, agitated bark. Before, he had thought it best to remain unnoticed. But this presence, with its identity unknown, unnerved him. He didn't like that... No, he didn't like feeling the least bit intimidated. After a brief moment, he impulsively raised his muzzle to the sky. He emmitted a low, haunting howl that echoed extensively in every direction. As he brought his head back down, he stood statuesque. And listened.
