Guess what, everybody? I got laid off! As of 5 pm today, I will officially be unemployed.

No idea what I'm gonna do next.

Psycho Lee
While donating blood today I remembered the other reason me and Xale argued which may have caused him to dislike or distrust me. I couldn't remember why he had such a dislike of me which led to us splitting ways until now...

The Red Cross has a ban on gay donations. I believe the thinking is that gays are more likely to have HIV, thus it's not worth the risk. And while it's true that gays amount to a very tiny portion of the population, I think it's kinda rude and prejudice to exclude gays, to assume that gays are walking HIV incubators.

It was right after donating that Xale mentioned he was getting tested for HIV. And I told him "Once you find out you're negative you can stick it to the Red Cross and tell them to go blow themselves."

Which for some reason got him really pissed. He readily defended the Red Cross, saying that gays do get HIV very very easily and RC is justified in their ban, and that he knows this s**t because he's an expert. I'm not sure how he's an expert, because maybe he volunteered for the RC? Volunteering does not make you an expert on blood donations or HIV or statistics on HIV in the gay community... I didn't see him with a doctor's license.

But he called me a troll and an a** and said I was trying to start drama all because I disagreed with him, felt the RC was being discriminatory, and felt that gays should have some right to donate blood.

But yea, I donated blood anyway.
That's really weird, he told me he's gay with an appreciation for female form, so I don't see why it wouldn't bother him.

Though I have to agree that HIV is more prevalent in homosexuality, but it's because so many believe that they don't NEED condoms because they are gay and can't get pregnant or get STDs (which of course is wrong, and misinformation).

Its a rather outdated rule that I imagine was originally enacted when it was believed HIV was only something gay people got.

I always wanted to donate blood but I can't. You have to be at least 110 pounds and I fall about 13 pounds short of that.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 23, 2010 6:47 pm

yeah thats retarded... thats definitely an outdated rule. I want to donate blood, i don't have HIV, i don't... gay or not i don't... so why the ******** does it matter? why cant i donate blood?

the rule is discriminatory, end of story.

reminds me of the salvation army hiding behind the safety of being a well respected charity organization telling Katrina victims they have to be straight to receive charity from the organization during the aftermath of the hurricane.

And last I checked, all blood donations get tested for HIV before they're given to anyone. Which adds an extra level of retardation to the rule.

Globally speaking, Straight Female Africans are the most likely to have HIV and/or AIDS. Plus, since heterosexuals outnumber homosexuals, they should know by now that the greater risk comes from heterosexuals in the first place since by the numbers you'll have them donating more than the others. (Not that there should be any policy discriminating against any group.)

But yes, Shakeidas is right, they have to test it anyway. The fact that they can't accept my blood, but will gladly accept the blood of a heavy drug user ticks me off quite a bit... (Though if Krissim's right, I couldn't donate anyway. I don't think I weigh enough...)

I'm sure all those people who die from a lack of blood appreciate that law "protecting" them from the gay cooties. neutral

Interestingly, I think if you have ever traveled to Africa, you get a permanent deferral. I know it was one of the things they asked me.

The Red Cross complains so much about not having enough blood yet rejects half the people that come to their door... their fault if there's not enough blood.

Man I have dug myself into a hole.

A while back Rainey commissioned a piece of art for me.
Here is the original.

Let me stress that I liked the image a lot. But I had problems with the point behind the ear, and the wings on the leg (she told me the wings were substitute for real wings that she can't draw... what?)

I asked her if she could fix the wings and earpoint for me, and she got pissed. She thought I hated the artwork, and asked if I wanted her to refund Rainey, which I said no. And I didn't bother her after that, figuring she would get more upset if I attempted to get her to fix it.

So I used photoshop to try to fix it myself. Here is my fail attempt.

The ear was easy to fix. But I'm dissatisfied with the pants leg, and may try it again. And then Mort just had to notice that the thumb on the right hand is missing a nail, and that the index finger on that hand looks odd (there's a light stripe going through it). And I'm stuck because I can't fix those either to my satisfaction.

I don't even know the moral implications of editing someone else's artwork, even if the art's for you. But if anyone else thinks they can fix the thumbnail, index finger, or pants, go at it please!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I tend to be critical of artwork I get. Picky, even. I ask for a sketch of the work in progress, to see if it looks good and ask for changes.
Many times, with women artists (I've had only had one male artist do something), I have said "change this please" or "I don't like this" and had them get angry or hurt or offended. I mentioned on my blog about this art that women seem to be really sensitive and emotional and take criticism personally, even if it's constructive or helpful, and seem to have low-self esteem about their artistic talents. Mind you I'm probably biased because I've only had (except 1) female artists, and maybe I've just had bad seeds, or girls with low-self esteem.
Women on my blog said I was being misogynistic and one of them said "no wonder you're single." None of them gave me any advice about the artwork or any help. Good job Lee. You ******** up again. Sigh.
Wow, that's some bullshit Lee. If I was the artist, I would gladly change it. Better a satisfied customer than none at all. I don't understand the sensitivity some artists have. That's the whole point of showing a preliminary image
Though from the way it's done, it appears it was all done on one layer, that could be why she's uncomfortable fixing it, for fear of messing up the rest of the image.
im pretty sure its a universal rule that needle users are not allowed to donate blood period.
@lee: as an artist it is kind of unethical to edit anothers artword without their direct consent. but to be honest the artist you hired took on a job knowing she had to draw wings, knowing what an ear looks like... but decided rather than attempting to create them correctly worked around it.
then again you hired an artist to create artwork... she created artwork.
i think if this is an issue you have, either take up art yourself. or start writing up contracts.
as to girls being more emotional than men id have to dissagree, i dont know the situations in which you had with other artists, and what kinds of things you needed fixxed, but blogging about girls being emotional... when factors involved in emotionality could have been much more complicated than gender. while isnt really misogynist, is a bit brutal.. and definately asking for backlash.
Actually, Lee didn't commission the artist. I did, so in reality I gave her the description, she gave me the sketch and I ok'ed it because I am not picky about the artwork and then she gave him the final work.
So really, it would have been up to me to do all the nitty gritty changes during the WIP process. And since it was supposed to be a gift, I wasn't going to hand him the WIP and see if he wanted any changes made.
And now I've been in physical pain all day for reasons I'm still not entirely clear on. This weekend has been most excellent so far.
Lee since this was a gift you could have politely asked but if she didn't want to fiddle with it I would leave it alone. As for what artists will do that depends on the artist. Some will not change anything and will have rules right when you commission that you get what you get. I know a lot of artists won't fix anything past the sketch phase.
As for your description it isn't a woman thing there are many artists that don't want to hear about perceived flaws. Some beat themselves up about it while others will give you the finger and are too narcissistic to comprehend how anything about their art could be off.
I'm not going to lie I prefer commissioners that accept my art for what it is. That is one of the reasons I love Rainey who I must say is the exact opposite of picky. That being said since I like to please my customers and keep them coming back for more and I'm willing to tweak things within reason. The last piece I did I did three seperate color versions to capture the right hue. Right now I'm getting ready to completely redraw a sketch since the commissioner decided they wanted a different pose. Art is subjective so I don't see it so much as a right or wrong but different tastes. Part of the magic about commissioning art is getting to see your stuff in different styles. One can say there is a certain beauty and balance even found in flaws.
:/
I'm not saying picky is a bad thing, though in some cases it is. I read all the journals where people are complaining of a commissioner asking them to redo a picture because they didn't like one thing in the final product (and these are all artists that I know do sketch approvals).
I can show you some pieces I've gotten where it is obvious some things just don't look right, but I think those little flaws make the art more unique.
I can name a handful of times where I've asked an artist to change something in the WIP process and usually it's just "make the tail more fluffy".
If the artist is happy, I'm happy and if the artist enjoys working with me, chances are they'll want continue to work with me in the future, which is <3. I'd much rather have the artist enjoy the piece of work they're doing, than having a perfect picture with a crapload of detail and perfect anatomy *nods*
