Recently I decided to look in to something; Emo. No, not Media bastardized emo or scene, Real Emo. Which by the way, by no means stands for Emotional. That would not make sense because all music is emotional of some sort. Emo stands for Emotive Hardcore. Bands like Saetia(Founding fathers of Screamo), Sunny Day Real estate, Moss Icon, Cap'n Jazz. These are real Emo bands. Want some Clarification? As a disclaimer I'm just getting into this so bear with me.

The term Emo was used to describe a subgenre of hardcore punk which originated in the Washington, DC music scene of the mid-1980s. As I've said earlier It by no means stands for Emotional. That would not make sense because all music is emotional of some sort. Emo stands for Emotive Hardcore. The most popular bands of the period included Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party, and, slightly later, Moss Icon.

Starting in the mid-1990s, the term Emo began to reflect the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi. Bands including Sunny Day Real Estate and Texas Is the Reason put forth a more indie rock style of emo, more melodic and less chaotic in nature than ithe original Emo bands. This group of bands survived until the late 1990s, as many of the bands either disbanded or shifted to mainstream styles, unfortunately.

As the few Emo bands that entered the mainstream indulged in success, newer bands began to emulate the more mainstream style, creating a style of music that has now earned the title Emo within popular culture. This however is just the Media taking the Term and slapping it on these bands. Bastardizing and putting to shame all True Emo fans. To this day when someone calls me or someone Emo, I try to let them know that they are using it incorrectly. They never listen.

That good enough for you? A few key facts and thoughts for you people.

Emo is NOT kids with hair in their eyes.
It is NOT ******** Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, All American Rejects, or any of those horrid, HORRID bands.

Emo does NOT involve tight jeans, it does NOT involve boys with really bad eyeliner, it does NOT involve whining all the time.
And by no means does it EVER involve cutting.

These are emo bands; enjoy them and pass the word.

Facts you say?
These "emo kids" are just trendy hot topic goers or Hipsters and the like. Not Emo.
If anything I'd call it scene, but That's just stupid.

In summery

Emo:
Emo should not have anything to do with a scene, it is a genre of music. Emo is not short for Emotional, that wouldn't make sense because all music is emotional of a sort. Emo is short for Emotive Hardcore, which is a none political hardcore punk with more emotional/poetic lyrics from the DC Scene of the 80's.
Some emo bands are: Rites of Spring, Hot Cross, Orchid, Transistor Transistor, La Quiete, pg.99, Amanda Woodward, Envy and Circle Takes the Square.
Bands that are somehow confused with emo but are most certainly not: Taking Back Sunday, Fall Out Boy, My Bloody Valentine, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Simple Plan, Panic! At The Disco and Matchbook Romance.

There you go.
I used some sources.
but piss off.
You don't get them.

Peace.
