I was wondering about this for awhile. Do people find things more appealing when things are mistyped or misspelled? I have seen signs that say something like this "Kustom Kleaning". Does it appeal more to people or just catch their attention?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is: What is it about misspelling and mistyping that attracts our attention so?

You know...when I was a kid and played that, it never bothered me for some reason, though I knew it was spelled wrong. Strange...

More like trying to get attention than appealing...

The misspelled letters catch your attention, without diverting to much from the value of the product. For example, Mortal Kombat. The first thing you notice is the 'K' at the beginning of 'Kombat'. Even though it is a 'K', you still recognize the word as 'combat', and then you know it is a fighting game. However, if it were just Mortal Combat, it would probably not catch the eye as much as Mortal Kombat would. It isn't meant to appeal as much as it is to catch the eye.

Ah, the love of misspelling in advertising... and then the government wonder why children these days can't spell?

You really think that this affects the way people spell? It would be interesting if it was.

It gets my attention, but every time I see a van with the name "Kustom Kleaning" on the side (I hope you don't mind if I use your example) or something like that, it just pisses me off. It leads me to think that they hire illiterate people (Which they probably don't, but still...); and I can't help but think--

'If I had a home, then I wouldn't want a bunch of illiterate people cleaning it and misunderstanding the instructions I left.'

I know that they do that to make things seem cooler because it shows off the "clever" alternate spelling which really isn't that clever at all. Anyone can think of alternate spellings. rolleyes

They also do it to make things seem foreign, like "Häagen-Dazs". The name and spelling makes it look forgein, and "exotic" to some extent. It looks like they tried to make it look like Danish or something but as far as I know Häagen-Dazs means nothing in any language.

Sometimes it may be because someone has already taken the properly spelled name. If you want to name your store "Music Heaven" but the name is already taken, you could go with "Musik Heaven" or "Müsic Heaven" which might not be taken yet.

I thought Häagen-Dazs was named after the people who created it.

I notice misspellings on company names and such, but I mostly ignore them, seeing as they're usually put there on purpose.

It goes with me."

It gives me a headache, therefore, I just avoid looking at it. For example, "Kwik Kar." It is not cool to me.

Yeah...it's just a big "Look at us!" kinda thing, I think. I don't know if they think it's cute or something...I almost want to find someone who named their business that way and ask. Maybe somebody should start a survey or something, I kind of wonder why they do it now too.

I'm actually considering starting a small business with a k instead of a c in the word "cat" myself, but there's logic behind that. Kat has been my nickname for probably my whole life, after all...

I think misspellings like these originally were ways to be unique. People to tend to read correctly written words fairly quickly, almost unconsciously. If there's a slight misspelling (Kat instead of Cat; Kool instead of Cool), people will pause for those few crucial seconds and take in the words more fully.

Unfortunately, these small errors have grown into the horror that is text talk. For example, there is a billboard in my town from the main electric company that says "UZ LS PWR". I understand that they want to get their point across, but isn't this a bit much? This teaches our kids that not only is text talk acceptable spelling, it is an appropriate way to communicate. They will see this on billboards and in newspaper, and they will question (indeed, they will deny) the need to write with correct grammar and spelling. If society continues in this fashion, the English langauge will fade away to be replaced by--*shudder*--text talk. Oh, the horror! The horror! (<--I just finished reading Heart of Darkness and couldn't help quoting it. ^_^ )

...My little rant is finished.
