She was new to the world, very new, especially when she had only just began exploring it herself. Ainra had been shy of going outside. Her other siblings had gone out with their mother a few days prior but she had remained. She hadn't felt ready. But now, now she was and when her family was sleeping she wriggled free from her mother's tight embrace and crept up to the outside.

The air was cooler but pleasant, filled with unusual smells that tickled her sensitive nostrils. The sky was bright, strangely blue and scudded with clouds and somewhere close by a bird sang it's heart into words she could not possibly understand. A bird song was something only another bird could comprehend and right now, the singing was background and nothing more.

The girl wanted to explore.

She remembered with vivid clarity the teasings she had recieved for not wanting to go outside and the jealous pang she had felt had watching them all go. But she wasn't afraid, atleast that's what she told herself. No, this was something she wanted to do alone. Though that wasn't really true.

Her mother had told her about a place that was especially beautiful, a babbling river that bubbled and frothed. She wanted to find that and then tease everyone afterwards.

So, not too sure where she was going, Ainra headed off on clumsy paws, towards what she hoped was the river.

The young cub (who even younger then Ainra) sat with his tail curled around his tiny frame, staring down into the depths of a little stream. The atmosphere around him was not its usual happy-go-lucky self, and instead possessed a darker, more brooding feeling. His day had already been brought down a few notches, and this time not from his own doing (he was known to be a little rough when playing - it was as if with his small size he felt like he had to be rougher to gain the same effect as cubs would who were larger then him). Some of the larger cubs had been after him once again, teasing him about his size, about his girly pink bangs. His brothers had pink, as well, but if they were teased he did not know about it. Boys usually liked to handle their own pain and suffering and not share it with anyone else.

That was why Kinya had secluded himself to this little bend in the stream, so he could suffer alone. He didn't want any of his brothers to see how distressed he was, because they would only tease him more about his weakness. Boys just weren't all that sensitive, and definitely not in the way that girls were. But, then girls were generally unappealing to boys with their overexaggerated emotions and chit-chatting. It just didn't appeal to them as much as rolling around in the dirt did. Kinya, though, had as many emotional highs and lows (he firmly believed) as an adolescent female. He wouldn't be like that, though, if everyone would just leave him alone! But they wouldn't. Boys liked to be cruel to other boys, and because Kinya was obviously lacking in size and masculine coloration he was made a main target of such cruelness.

Sniffling, he raised his paw to wipe at his eyes, vaguely surprised when he felt the wetness. Oh, no! He was not crying! No, no, NO! Only girls cried, not tough little boys! Kinya certainly wasn't a girl, and certainly should not be feeling this way after being 'brutally' teased. "Stop!" He muttered to himself, whining softly when he realized how broken his voice sounded, how lonely and hurt it came out. The emotions were threatening to get the better of him... and what if someone came along and saw him like this? He leaned forward, bringing his nose close to the water's surface. "Listen to me, Kinyago'vitimbi, you are a boy and thus you do not cry! YOU. DO. NOT. CRY. So get those tears out of your eyes! You're a boy. Only girls cry. STOP IT." He was getting angry at his reflection, because even though he was telling himself to stop crying his reflection showed that he was still doing it.

Suddenly he heard the footsteps of another, frighteningly close, too close! Oh, no, someone was going to actually see him cry! He couldn't let that happen... he had to prevent it from happening at all costs! If someone saw him they'd just go and tell everyone else about how Kinya was a big cry baby, and that was most certainly not the case. "Go away!" Once again his voice sounded hopeless and heartbroken, but there was nothing he could do about it.

Having not yet learned to walk quietly, Ainra stomped through the grass, tripping and stumbling occasionally. She didn't seem to notice, however, to her she was walking just fine. She had her feet moving and she was getting someplace.

The first sound she heard was the babbling of the stream and, heightened with excitement, she quickened her pace and skittered forwards, seemingly desperate to reach her goal. Then, the sound of the stream was interrupted by a cry of despair. Who was that?

She wanted to shrink back, to run and hide but...the voice sounded young and sad...maybe not all outsiders were bad. Besides, they were in a pride and prides were safe...apparently. She began again, parting through the bushes to come into view. Ahead of her, sitting at the verge of the stream was a cub, younger than herself.

Then his warning came and she hesitated again. What if he attacked her? What if he really did want her to go away?

"Umm..." She spoke loudly so that she wouldn't have to get so close. "Are yous okay?" She took another, small step. He sounded so sad. She had to do something! "Can...can I help?" Though how she would she didn't quite know.

His gaze turned to the side briefly, watching Ainra as she exited the thicket and came into his line of view. Instantly he then turned his head back and away from her, because the tears were still fresh in his eyes. He was still crying and he desperately did not want to see her witnessing the weaker moments of his life. Kinya was still nothing more then a boy, and boys liked to keep their pride intact. Having some silly girl come to comfort them would only make things worse! Oh, she would only tell all of her girly-girl friends and they would giggle and gossip and soon everyone would know that Kinya was a cry baby! It horrified him to think of that, and frantically he raised his paw to his eyes and tried to wipe the tears away. Maybe she still hadn't seen them, maybe she was stupid enough to believe that he had dunked his face into the stream. Being known for cleanliness was better then being known for crying a lot.

"No!" He whimpered softly, letting his pink bangs fall in front of his eyes, all of these being methods to hide his hurt and those silly little tears. "I'm perfectly fine! You shouldn't be talkin' to me 'cause nothin' is wrong with me. Girls don' talk to boys." He was fastly becoming defensive, because that seemed to be the only way to get her to leave him alone. Kinya couldn't find it in his heart to be mean when he was so sad, and besides it was very bad for him to be mean to girls. His mom wouldn't like it and he had already learned that she had a little bit of a temper. He had to be the perfect little darling in front of her, and if Ainra went away crying his mom would certainly find out that he made her cry and would punish him accordingly.

"N-no, you can't help. No one can help. I can handle it on my own 'cause I'm strong. I'm really, really strong and there is nothing wrong with me." He felt that he could hide the tears enough to sneak a peek at her, and so he did just that, red eyes even made redder from the effects of the tears. "I don't need help. Thanks for offerin', but I don't need it."

She padded closer, her large, clumsy paws moving awkwardly across the ground. She was obviously going to be a late bloomer, because though she was older she was certainly less developed than others her age. Her walking was not great and her speech often lapsed into childish pronounciation. Of all the cubs, Ainra certainly wasn't the brightest bulb in the box.

However, she did have a heart of gold and she knew tears when she saw them and his effort at hiding them. She, not knowledgeable in the difference between girls and boys, blinked in confusion at his words.

"Whyyy?" She questioned. "Is it a...rule?" She smiled, her tail swaying slightly. Maybe she was breaking some rule that her mother had failed to confide in her. Or maybe not. Maybe this was just a boy's excuse. If it was, it was totally lame.

"Um, okay then." Strong? What was so great about being strong? She wasn't strong but she certainly was happy. "Um, do you...wanna...um..." She paused, uncertain of what to say. She could see he was upset but was frightened of pointing it out in case he got mad and went into some boyish rant about how he was strong once again. "Um..." It seemed most of her sentences started with hesitancy. "I'm Ainra." She smiled and giggled. "Yous look like a flower!"
