What's up with the filler eps? Even though some of them actually give some background on people and their actions. Is it really necessary? And is it just me or did they skip the kakashi gaiden completly? ...

I think they are just waste of time. I just wait that the "real" episodes start. It is obvious that because those are filler episodes, nothing important what could effect to main plot won't happen. Basically nothing won't happen...
But filler episodes are neccessary because manga have to be farther on the plot.
