CHAPTER 1--DRUNK AGAIN
He was drunk. Again.
It wasn't the loss of Red Shield that hurt the most. Or the disappearance of Saya and Hagi. No, it was the fact that she was gone. And so he drank, to stop himself from thinking of her.
He couldn't blame her for leaving. It was true that all research done with Red Shield had to be kept secret, and she would never receive recognition with them. It was true that her life was probably in much less danger now. It was true that he hadn't given her the attention he should have...
He got up to get himself another drink and caught a glimpse of his reflection in the mirror. He looked tired, disheveled, broken. He could see scars under his open shirt; he was covered with them. He'd always taken it for granted that she'd be there to patch him up. She was always there waiting for him after every mission; helping him take his shirt off, the sting of the medicine cleaning the wounds, her smooth hands carefully wrapping bandages around his chest as she chastised him to be more careful, hands lingering a few extra seconds on his bare skin...
God damn it, he missed her.
Later that night, the others would hear David mumbling in his sleep. "Julia...love..."

CHAPTER 2--CAFFEINE HIGH
She'd lost track of how much coffee she'd had. She hadn't slept in two days; she couldn't even if she weren't nearly ODing on caffeine. Trying to rest gave her the chance to think of him.
He probably hated her, if he was even still alive. By the time she'd realized what Collins had been up to it was too late to go back, no matter how much she wanted to. Hell, she didn't even know if there was a Red Shield she could return to. That was the worst part, not knowing if her closest friends were still breathing...As reckless and headstrong as David was...
No, she wouldn't think about it, she decided. Even so, her hand shook slightly as she took yet another gulp of coffee.
She knew it was hopeless though. No matter how much coffee she drank, her caffeine high would eventually end. Her body would win out, she would have to sleep, and her imagination would antagonize her in her dreams.
Hours later, Collins and Argeno found Julia asleep at her computer. Both agreed this was a good thing, she was of no use to them dead from exhaustion.
