First birthday

"How much cake do you want?" Bob asked. The Violet family had just finished the fire and the singing and the candle extinguishing, and all three girls were now staring at the larger-than-necessary cake that was stacked in front of Beth. It was her first birthday, and the former yeti had decided that if all birthdays turned out like this, she would try and live for a very long time.
"All," she said, extending purple hands toward fluffy chocolate icing. Thankfully, she couldn't quite reach. Toddler-to-cake placement was intentional.
"I want too," Duff chimed in, taking a step toward the cake, but not moving to touch it.
Only Maclah stayed back, hands folded demurely. She cast wide, dewy eyes up at Robert, in an attempt to steal some cake of her own through her own personal cute factor. If Robert hadn't raised her, he might have succumb, but instead he said, "You each get a slice. Beth gets the largest because it's her birthday. I only asked to be polite." His mind somewhere else, Robert reached out and tousled the purple toddler's hair. Instead of flinching away or growling, Beth ignored the gesture of affection for the most part, chuckling to herself at her cake conquest. It was a start. |
