It made him smile that she could still put on a smile for him, and he took comfort in knowing that it was his own strength that made her strong. He was sure that so long as he never fell to pieces, he would always be able to keep her together. It was his duty as a mate, as a lover, as her shining knight. He would be there for her through thick and thin, as he was there for her now.
He was drawn out of his thoughts as he felt Ihlo’s eyes upon him, turning slowly to look in the direction she had stepped away into. So lost in his own thoughts, he hadn’t even noticed that she’d stepped away from him, but now that he got closer he saw what had drawn her attention. “I told you we’d find her, love,” he said softly, not wanting to wake the young cub, for all that she looked weary.
“Grab her up and let’s go home?” he asked softly, nudging her shoulder lightly with his nose. He didn’t feel right carrying the cub, being that he’d never known her. He figured it’d do more harm than good to have her wake up in a stranger’s maw. That, and he felt Ihlo herself would prefer to carry her sister home.
