Been here, done this topic, by the way... what in the Flying Spaghetti Monsters unpronounceable name is a new-age punk?
And how are Band tee's a necessity? if you like a band, either get it from the bands site or from a gig, so that your actually supporting the band and not the merchandising and record companies.
Also you do know Hot Topic sells things at seriously inflated prices right?
Ok, I can't remember who posted this, but I was dying to explain, but the thread was locked. So i decided to post it in a new thread. But any ways:
New age punk: It can't be explained. if you are punk rocker in todays world truly, you just know what it is naturally.
Band Merchandise: When you buy a band t-shirt in a store, a percentage of it always goes to the band. The other part of it goes to the store. And even the percentage the band recieved goes to their record company to pay off their Cd's, the cost of making the merchandise, and the gas they use for touring.
And when you buy off of the bands website, even then the full amount of the money doesn't go to them. Only a percentage, once again,it goes to their record company to pay off their Cd's, the cost of making the merchandise, and the gas they use for touring.
The same percentage of their money from the tickets they sell go to the same thing.
Thatz why popular bands are always still poor. Until they become even more popular and make more money and pay off their Cd's (Until they make more of their old CD's or record more Cd's), they won't be rich.

new age punk? rolleyes
and no, if you buy the t-shirts at a store like Hot Topic, the band gets very little, if anything. The store pays a licensing fee, then makes the t-shirts themselves. If you buy them at shows (assuming you're not going to see some huge corporate sellout band) then the band/record label typically had the shirts made themselves (and it's not very expensive to do) and make a decent amount of profit on it. Say they pay somewhere around $3.00 for each shirt, then another $2.00 per shirt in silk screening costs, so they pay $5 for the shirt total ( and that gets cheaper the more they have made), then charge $10-$15 for each shirt. They're doubling or tripling the investment they put in to each shirt. If they're big enough to be sold in a retail outlet like Hot Topic, the store would pay them for the rights to use their image/logo/name, say $5000 or whatever (I'm just making up numbers here, no idea what they actually pay). Then they proceed to sell 15,000 shirts. The band isn't making any additional money, just the flat $5k, whereas if all 15,000 shirts had been bought from them directly, they'd have made $45,000.

I'm the one who posted it, the merchandise thing is already explained, so no please explain what exactly new-age punk is, you're the third person to mention it, but as far as I know, most of the guild has no clue what your on about and most punks have no clue what you're on about. So unless you're talking about the division between old school punk and the travesty that passes for modern punk, I have no clue what the hell you're on about.
In fact the only definitive thing I can find about New Age Punk on google, is a punk band called "New Age" and a Wikipedia search turned up nothing... infact all I can find is this site: http://www.newagepunk.com/ And given it all seems like fairly basic trance samples, I get the feeling New Age Punk is the term for a DJ collective not a genre.

Even if the band sells the shirts to a distributor like Hot Topic, the band doesn't get any cash from Hot Topic's sale.
The band gets cash when the sell stock to Hot Topic. Hot Topic pays them nothing for the actual sale itself. Therefore, whether or not I buy a T-shirt at a major distributor, the band has already recieved it's money. The only way for the band to make more money is if Hot Topic were to sell out it's stock and needed to buy more. Meaning one t-shirt sale wouldn't get the band anything; you'd need increments of 500 sold shirts for the band to recieve more.
The cost of this is pretty large, which is why it's rarely done anymore. And whether it's done the way you [Sinister] mention, or the way I brought it up, the band still gets nothing for an individual sale. Or even large sales.

Well they can't just go selling band t-shirts withought the bands permission!! So they have to get some money.

They buy in the shirts at about a dollar each and any profit made is directly Hot Topics. -_-

There is no legitimate argument you could make that could justify supporting a corporate retail chain like Hot Topic, especially over supporting the band directly.
