After posting in the GCD I got a PM from someone random and, upon opening it, my browser crashed. When Firefox finally rebooted and I checked out the PM again the huge image actually loaded and didn't crash Firefox like they usually do. Just posting this as sort of a heads up that people are PMing GCDers with such things.

Other than the image they also said this:
Quote:
This is a little something for all of Gaia to consider: Was it worth it? Was it worth putting a price on an entire webculture and profiting off of it? Was it worth the deluge of angry hackers and spammers ruining people's lives? Would it have been that difficult to remove the item and give a refund and simply apologize? Which is more difficult, attacking a website or defending a website? To defend, you need to have a code that covers all possible methods of attack. All the attacker has to do is to find one flaw and the entire site goes down. Considering how many are attacking, it's only a matter of time. And when the site is cracked, the system will be destroyed beyond recovery and every 1 and 0 of data is going to harvested and used against you, the users. Anything that brings them closer to your identity will be scrutinized. And soon you will be finding yourselves face-to-face with the chaos erupting here, except it will be much worse to find it on your doorstep. Gaia will fall, and you, the users will be the next step. So I ask you again, was it worth it?

Talk about it?
Have you gotten the same desperate PMs?
Their desperate attempts to strike back.

So I found this topic and the GCD and found it kinda interesting and thought I should post it here. I tend to do that for all the none GCD folks in my guilds. sweatdrop anyway I wanna see orderly discussion!

Ok, I'll be the first to admit I'm not up to date on all the behind the scenes and why. I know what this item is that is causing the fuss ... I don't understand why gaia would stir up a hornets nest in releasing an item that another site claimed. That's the jist of it right?

Am I naive .. is gaia really that vunerable to being completely hacked and shutdown?

Nah Gaia is fine. They didn't intend on causing trouble but those items belong to everybody not just those idiots.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 29, 2008 5:32 pm
so basically a small group of people are members of both sites and are intent on stirring up trouble and trying to cause panic - mad

I am not that much affected by this as I was earlier. I think Gaia will be fine, they have over a hundred employees.

This is what I got in response to my reply to some raider's PM to me (which failed because I had the image adblocked). She said it was karma, so I asked "karma for what?" and sent a serious business pic.

Guess what, you screwed up big time. I work with the FBI and I can tell you right now that this has gone too far. All the cybercrime reports we are getting are stupid and I want to tell all of you exactly how much we care here in DC. NONE. That's right, none. Do you know how many attacks we get on pentagon mainframes? It goes up to the millions. We don't care about you babies whining about your crappy avatars or your myspaces. Whatever child porn is floating around here, it's the hosting site that gets taken down. Not the poster. So, we can't do anything and we don't have the time or patience to do it either. Get a freaking clue.

I lol'd.

That person is a ******** moron. I looked through their post history. A whopping nine posts. Some of them said what you've quoted, others said 'OMG I GOT A MESSAGE AND IT WAS A HEADLESS BABY YOU'RE SICK I'M NOT STAYING AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU' and something about being worried about Anon/*Chann 'I'm so scared I can't stop crying'

I LOL'd, tbh

EDIT: Oh, and the ******** caught me with a huge.jpg when I was looking through the post history. I didn't LOL at that stare but thank God for AdBlock

Yeah, it was totally worth it. No, I'm not worried about their pathetic attempts at internet terrorism (they're seriously tripping over an idea?). I'm sure it's inconvenient, but I also have faith it's nothing Gaia HQ can't handle.

Completely off topic, I had a nice, long, immature lol over the word "fart" on the jet in TakingOverMe's sig xd .... dear god I need to get some sleep gonk

We got better security out of it, and we got free security testing, where most companies have to PAY for security tests. So, ya, it was worth it, because not only did Gaia make money off of it, they also saved money. whee

That is one of the stupidest things I've ever read.
That's even worse than all of the noobs in Towns who run around saying "OMG, I'M A MOD, I BAN U" when you refuse to give them one of your valuable items.

Longcat was an internet meme, originating from... somewhere...

and Gaia made an item out of it as well as many other memes in the Infiinty Hat, which they sold for real money. 420chan.org got really mad because the internet is serious business and they came to the Gaia in an attempt to DDoS the site, or basically shut down the servers (which doesn't work on Gaia because it's a huge company). They had their hopes up from Subeta, another avatar site, that made a longcat item and the owner claimed it as his own. This was a crappy site run by one guy. So the channers threatened him with something... I forget what. He was scared and gave away members' passwords. Then they ultimately changed the main page to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air for a while or something. Anyway.

So they think Gaia is easy stuff, but we have tons of security, plus ignore lists, adblocks, etc.

DDoS won't work, so what they do is lace images with those pop-ups that ask for your password, and spam disgusting or ******** huge resolution pictures everywhere to freeze your PC and disgust you. They constantly say that the raid hasn't even come yet but in reality they can't do anything and they're just trying to scare us.

The fact is, Gaia DID credit them.User Image
