I have to go with the springfield. It is reliable, as stated before and can be used at long ranges.

Ultimately, an M1 garand would be my top pick

I've got one, it's great, but the clips are annoying, tedious to reload, and hard to find if you lose them.

And there's always Garand Thumb.

Unless I'm mistaken, you're not really even supposed to look down when in a "fighting" situation. That way you can see what's going around you.
Atleast; that's what I learned to do in paintball.

I was talking to school children and telling them about the garand thumb and how to put the clip in, and had put the clip in an pulled back the slide, and let up at the slide just enough that it slammed shut on my thumb.

If you do it fast and clean, it's as unlikely as Slide bite to a good shooter.

I read back, and saw some people talking about the .223's advantage of range and head-emptying Muzzle velocities. It got me thinking though, how many of us can shoot to 400 yard, even with a good scope? I'm sure someone here can, but I sure as hell cant and I wouldn't waste my ammo doing so. At 50 yards, a .45 will still dump somethings head out or knock it down, giving you time to move.

Another thing is, however, what about shooting other things in a SHTF situation? Camping in the woods, away from civilization, oh s**t theres a bear bothering us. Pop a couple .45s into it, no more problem.
