Story

Fifteen-year-old Miaka Yuki is transported into an ancient Chinese kingdom by an old library book, The Universe of the Four Gods. Following the legend in the story, Miaka becomes the Priestess of Suzaku and must find her seven Celestial Warriors before she can save the kingdom and return home.

Yuu Watase was born on March 5 in a town near Osaka, Japan, and she was raised there before moving to Tokyo to follow her dream of creating manga. In the decade since her debut short story, Pajama de Ojama (An Intrusion in Pajamas), she has produced more than 50 compiled volumes of short stories and continuing series. Her works have provided the basis for two television series, an OVA series, anime soundtrack CDs, and a string of novels.

Miaka is a junior high school student studying for entrance exams for Johan High School, the top school in the city. Not academically inclined, Miaka would rather forget studying and spend more time eating snacks--her favorite pastime--but she's cramming for the exam to please her mother. While studying at the library with her best friend Yui, she finds an old book called The Universe of the Four Gods. Upon reading the book, the girls are transported to a land resembling ancient China. Immediately on their arrival, a pair of bandits attempts to abduct Yui! A mysterious young man with the kanji for "demon" on his forehead comes to their rescue, but now he wants to be paid for his act of heroism!

An embittered Yui has sworn revenge on Miaka, believing that her best friend had no intention of rescuing her from the Qu-Dong empire. Now Yui has become the Priestess of Seiryu, the enemy of the Hong-Nan empire, and a rival for Tamahome's affections! Tamahome leaves Miaka to travel to Qu-Dong in an attempt to stop a war between the two territories from breaking out, and Hotohori starts to woo Miaka in his absence. Laden with Hotohori's gold and a big appetite, Miaka embarks on a journey to find the remaining three Celestial Warriors, who will help her in her quest to save the Hong-Nan empire and return home. Tamahome's love for Miaka has broken Nakago's hold over him, and his memory has returned. But when the real warrior Chiriko is discovered, the ceremony will no longer work. Now Miaka must travel to Genbu to find another way to summon Suzaku with a sacred treasure called the shentso-pao. She then sends Miaka back to the real world to separate her from Tamahome, but Tamahome holds on to Miaka, and the couple is sent to present-day Japan together. Suboshi follows Yui to Japan, intent on destroying Miaka for Yui. Simultaneous battles rage in both The Universe of the Four Gods and in present-day Japan, and Celestial Warriors die. But Yui is soon to discover that having her wishes granted comes at a great personal price…

I have all the volumes of FY. I kept seeing it in the manga section for the longest time, so I decided to start reading it a couple of years ago. I think I read Alice 7 before I started Fushigi Yugi though. I do love FY though, even if most of the characters die... D: Yuu Watase is one of my favorite manga-ka, even if a lot of her endings are a rip-off somewhat (Absolute Boyfriend anyone? stare ).
