If what I have said offended you...

I was talking to my friend and he mentioned hearing of these weird devices that were launched like mortars and would sink into the ground on impact burying itself and becoming a landmine. Anybody know what he might mean?

... then it was probably intentional.

The Germans developed a device of this kind in WWII. Seeding anti-personnel mines by rapid deployment made for very interesting problems when it came time to map the locations.

The US had a more generic means to achieve the same result. Helicopters would drop a shell like mine that would, under ideal conditions, burrow into the soil and wait for their day.

Maybe he was referring to the Russian MRLSs?

They developed several different missiles that would deploy mines at a preditermined height obove ground.

It's not really mortars, but it's what I got. >.<

Not quite like mortars, but it is German.

SD2 Butterfly Bomb

It's pretty cool.
And with the 70 fuse, it can be an airdropped landmine.

It means some poor bat-rastard is going to loose a leg... if not more.

but seriously, I feel like I've heard the term, but I'm not sure of where nor what it is.
but how would it burrow itself without leaving evidence of its presence?

I'm not quite sure.

But, if they could be seen they were forced to go around since it was very hazardous to try and navigate through or defuse those things.
