I like to think of myself as an intelligent and sensible person in general, but I keep catching myself saying dumb nonsensical things with my cat in an idiotic voice, like some sort of babytalk, but not really. I hate babytalk. (And it's bad to use on actual babies!) It's just. She's so cute. And squishable. Seriously, wtf. neutral It's not just me, right? I mean. There is babytalk. stare
So, I theorize that cute makes people stupid. It like, kills brain cells, or at least stuns them. This might be a driving principle behind lolcats, too, which I admit to enjoying somehow, dumb as they are. This doesn't happen to me for babies, but then I think babies are generally ugly, obnoxious little things. It's just the fuzzy things that do it. But I think something could be written on the subject. Or it could be the basis for some wacky story, I don't know.
Anyway, I just had to get that out of my system. Imma gonna go squish my cat some more instead of doing homework. :B (Clearly I lied about the intelligent/sensible bit.)

I strongly doubt cute = stupid.
Most of my friends will tell you that I'm a serious person who doesn't like to kid around. But at certian times [I think it's cause I watch too much subbed anime sweatdrop ), I will actually complain or respond like a character from an anime, saying "hello" or "what was that for?" in Japanese for no real reason. It's just something I like to do. Same thing when I'm around cats. I love cats. They're so awesome heart I'm even a part of a group on campus that feeds them, and I have to talk like that to get them to trust me.
But anyways...back to the subject at hand...
I guess it's just a way to break from the norm of being so...serious and smart all the time, you know? Just my two cents.

I dunno. I think it works a lot like this, actually. Not that I'd really call myself serious or smart all the time, though. Just less inclined to make stupid noises. But cats are awesome. biggrin ;

I hate seeing peoples intelligence melt away when they see cute things.
The only way I get my dog to respond to me is by talking in a sickeningly sweet cutsey voice. *shudders* xp
I think animals just need that cuteness out of us and some just invoke it by default.

I try not to do that. When I visit my fiance's parents, who have two small dogs (a fat black chihuahua, and a spunky bugle-looking mutt), I restrain from talking to them in that gibberish tone, although my voice might become a bit more high-pitched when saying, "Hi! How are ya? How ya doin?" That sort of thing. It sort of bothers me when his mother talks to them like they fully understand what she's saying. The barks out orders that she hasn't taught yet. Stupid.
Perhaps it's been learned that animals respond to that tone as inviting, just as they respond to an angered tone to cower and hide. That voice gets dogs excited and maybe cats reared up for some good extra lovin'.
Have you researched it?

Quatrina, if you hadn't posted that, I would have. xkcd for the win! =D
I tend to talk to my sister's cat as if he were a person, because frankly, he reminds me of a grumpy old man who smells funny. If the cat was cute enough, I'd probably start babbling, as well. It's instinctual for me, no matter how hard I try not to do it.

Xkcd. <3
I don't have any pets, and I don't talk to babies. I do talk to cats, but usually in my normal voice.
If I actually had a pet it might be different though...

I have noticed the same thing especially with girls. Most of my friends turn into awkward creatures once they see a baby. I was nevef fan of babies or cute talking, but it seems like a known matter.
