Why do folding knives have holes for lanyards? I could understand sticking a fixed blade knife into a tree to hold up a rope or something of that nature, but I wouldn't want to put a load on a folding knife.

Probably so you can hang it around your neck, or so you can put a beaded chain on it and use it like a keychain or something.

actually, some of those cold steel folding knives can take a pretty decent load.

its pretty much the same reason for anything with a lanyard hole.
Weapon retention. Regardless of fixed or folded... if your engaged in a situation where loosing the knife would hazardous... a lanyard is prudent.

example... sometimes a fixed blade is either, impractical, impossible, or prohibited.... if you were suspended from a repelling line, down the wall of a building. And were attempting to cut a length of rope... or whatever. handling that knife without securing it to your hand is dangerous to the people below you, and if you loose your cutting tool... what'ya gonna do then?

just sayin.

Hmm...

Yeah I can see how they're needed. Honestly do they piss you off or something?

On another note;
I noticed that all of my handguns have lanyard loops.
Except for my 1911 but I'm probably going to fix that.

Also, for my Tokarev, one of the magazines it came with had a lanyard loop. neutral
